Professor Williams,

I have been reading your column in The Nation as long as it has appeared--with consistent appreciation and pleasure. I remember when your name was bruited about as a possible nominee to the Supreme Court!

Your most recent column has affected me even more strongly than any of its predecessors. I only wish that this were a moment on one of The Nation's Cruises, and that I could momentarily look into your face and say----I tremble at the thought! I have never chosen to join a Nation Cruise, because I can't imagine doing it without a partner (I'm a hopeless romantic).

May I merely be allowed to say that I consider myself privileged to be alive at the same time as you are!
