Editorial Profile |
The Nation is America's oldest weekly magazine and the most widely read journal of opinion. Founded by antislavery abolitionists in 1865, The Nation has long been regarded as one of the country's definitive journalistic voices. For more than 143 years of publishing articles on politics, culture, books and the arts, The Nation has remained true to its original commitment to be the critical, independent voice in American journalism. James Baldwin, Ralph Nader and Hunter S. Thompson published their first pieces in , while other historic contributors have included Martin Luther King Jr., Albert Einstein, Eleanor Roosevelt, Kurt Vonnegut, Emma Goldman and Arthur Miller.
The Nation's contemporary writers include Naomi Klein, Gore Vidal, William Greider, Barbara Ehrenreich, Walter Mosley, Katha Pollitt, Bill Moyers, Patricia Williams, Eric Alterman, Katrina vanden Heuvel and "deadline poet" Calvin Trillin, while the Books & the Arts section features vibrant reviews of books and
films, as well as poems and interviews. The Nation won the 2008 National
Magazine Award for public interest journalism, and received two George Polk
Awards for Joshua Kors's exposé on the stunning denial of benefits to veterans returning from Iraq and Jeremy Scahill's reporting on the Blackwater military contracting scandal. Our web presence, TheNation.com, is a heavily
trafficked site with videos, podcasts, breaking political news, books and cultural coverage, and web-only exclusives that take the magazine's commitment
to public-interest journalism online.
