In part three of a three-part debate series between The Nation‘s Chris
Hayes and Reihan Salam of the National Review, the two journalists
discuss whether the US is moving towards socialism
as a nation.
“Compared to where we were in 1900, I think the United States is pretty
clearly socialist,” says Salam. He argues that the country “is getting
to the point where we’re not going to be able to reverse some of the
moves in the direction towards a socialist economy.” Hayes points out
that socialism has a lot of different meanings but believes that America
should be moving towards social democracy. Check out the first two debates on healthcare and the military

Your support makes stories like this possible

From Minneapolis to Venezuela, from Gaza to Washington, DC, this is a time of staggering chaos, cruelty, and violence.

Unlike other publications that parrot the views of authoritarians, billionaires, and corporations, The Nation publishes stories that hold the powerful to account and center the communities too often denied a voice in the national media—stories like the one you’ve just read.

Each day, our journalism cuts through lies and distortions, contextualizes the developments reshaping politics around the globe, and advances progressive ideas that oxygenate our movements and instigate change in the halls of power.
