Could we just take the first paragraph of this column and dump it fortwith in the East River? "Honor," "change the world with ideas," "magazine sustenance," applied to willfully obtuse, malevolent white male boors of the first rank--what does that do but buy another round of drinks at the faculty club on Mr. Alterman? Was everything in your daddy's era so much better, Mr. Alterman, or is now just more of the same that's been going on?

Remembering Buckley as the main intellectual cheerleader for Senator McCarthy, I have a rather lower opinion of his "honor."

I appreciate Eric Alterman's put down of David Frum and Jonah Goldberg, two egregious lightweights in the battle of ideas. Frum is a Canadian export: a neocon Zionist whose loyalty seems neither to Canada nor the United States but the Likudnik State of Israel. Goldberg not only doesn't have the vaguest idea what Fascism is, he and his ilk are the best examples of American Fascism. They use all the techniques of Joseph Goebbels to blacken their opponents as unpatriotic, subversive, and stabbers in the back. If Jacob Heibrunn is correct in his analysis of Jewish neoconservatism (They Knew They Were Right), what we have here is the conscious decision of right-wing Jews to prevent another Hitler by pre-empting his methods and programs. Zionism is integral nationalism, and in Europe integral nationalism was the antechamber to Fascism.
