Healthcare coverage and the lack thereof for millions of Americans dominates the domestic political agenda. Professor Noam Chomsky points out that not until ailing sectors of American manufacturing began to step out in favor of a health care overhaul did the government respond with political plans to address the problem. Although the new proposals for public healthcare are a step forward, Chomsky argues that political inaction on behalf of the public general interest as a result of industry pressures reveals symptoms of a deteriorating democracy.
