Chris Hayes, DC editor of The Nation, appears on Morning Joe to discuss the White House’s latest attempt to persuade the big banks to lend as a boost to the economy. Hayes likens the whole thing to kabuki theater, expressing disgust for the “sociopathically indifferent” bankers and arguing that the notion of urging them to do more lending by moral suasion is “ludicrous.” But Hayes doesn’t go as far as Pat Buchanan and Joe Scarborough go in explaining why this won’t work–they, instead, act as defenders of the bankers, arguing that “all the world’s a stage” and that the CEOs don’t have a responsibility beyond themselves and their boards.

From Minneapolis to Venezuela, from Gaza to Washington, DC, this is a time of staggering chaos, cruelty, and violence.

Unlike other publications that parrot the views of authoritarians, billionaires, and corporations, The Nation publishes stories that hold the powerful to account and center the communities too often denied a voice in the national media—stories like the one you’ve just read.

Each day, our journalism cuts through lies and distortions, contextualizes the developments reshaping politics around the globe, and advances progressive ideas that oxygenate our movements and instigate change in the halls of power.
