It would be a big area of WWW death, approaching a black hole, should newspapers like the NYT stop availability of their product--unlike most other products, where if one source should stop production, like GM, there are many other suppliers of a similar product (in the GM area, mostly a superior product). I advocate a small charge to keep the NYT and other papers afloat. I would pay $1 a month ($12 annually) to three major newspapers of my choice, if I would be guaranteed access to any American newspaper online. Thirty-six dollars a year is a very small price to pay for the investigative news they produce. They are the fourth division of our government.

Not only are their costs increasing, but their major source of revenue, advertising, is drying up. Like most people, I only buy my local Sanford newspaper. But I read many online, free.

It's time to bite the bullet.
