Banks Nudged, Not Forced, to Lend

The White House’s latest attempt to persuade the big banks to lend as a boost to the economy is like kabuki theater, Christopher Hayes argues.

Chris Hayes, DC editor of The Nation, appears on Morning Joe to discuss the White House’s latest attempt to persuade the big banks to lend as a boost to the economy. Hayes likens the whole thing to kabuki theater, expressing disgust for the “sociopathically indifferent” bankers and arguing that the notion of urging them to do more lending by moral suasion is “ludicrous.” But Hayes doesn’t go as far as Pat Buchanan and Joe Scarborough go in explaining why this won’t work–they, instead, act as defenders of the bankers, arguing that “all the world’s a stage” and that the CEOs don’t have a responsibility beyond themselves and their boards.
