You can’t choose your relatives
This story shocked and surprised me.
My great grandfather, Julius Rosenwald, supported progressive causes all his life. Influenced by Booker T. Washington, he built thousands of schools for African-Americans across the rural South. The Rosenwald Fund supported African-American artists and writers. When asked why he did so, he answered,
“The horrors that are due to race prejudice come home to the Jew more forcefully than to others of the white race, on account of the centuries of persecution which they have suffered and still suffer.”
Clearly, the plight of any persecuted minority was one that interested him. He showed tolerance, understanding and empathy. Empathy.
That any Rosenwald money was used to support anti-Muslim groups is the polar opposite of what the rest of our large, and proudly progressive, family stands for.
