Media Fixes on Vandalism; Occupy Oakland Focuses on the Economy

Perception is everything... or at enough to sink OWS

The right wing and mainstream media can and will sink OWS because its structure as an “occupation” puts the focus on the individual “occupiers.” Some, even if a small minority, will be violent.

This morning I caught an interview on local Fox News of an “infiltrator” of Occupy Wall Street who engaged in meetings and conversations concerning theft and attempted sexual assault. Fox will not relent until polling of its audience clearly demonstates a rejection of the protesters; rejection of their message will necessarily follow.

Once OWS devolves into a story about the protesters and not about the issues, it will be defeated. I anticipate a O’Keefe style sting, with numerous interviews of people unable to articulate the problems, objectives and solutions, and who will verbally do damage to the cause of social justice and its image.

It is time to move beyond the Occupy stage and enter the mass demonstration stage with speakers who can articulate to the 99 percent who know that the economic and political decks have been stacked in favor of a small minority who have benefitted from a system that has been detrimental to the vast majority.
