Though I generally look forward and love anything written by Stuart Klawans, I was surprised at his glowing review of Avatar. Mr. Klawans generally is very insightful about the psychology beneath a movie, and often brings a refreshingly progressive perspective to his reviews.
However he praised Avatar without even mentioning the offensive "great white hope" narrative. The white male Marine becomes the leader of the natives and saves them from his own people. These are tired narratives, coming straight from white guilt and white fantasy, that never seems to die and never ceases to offend.
Think about A Man Called Horse, At Play in the Fields of the Lord, Dances With Wolves, The Last Samurai, Dune, Freedom Writers, Dangerous Minds, and the apartheid movie District 9.
Come on Stuart! Avatar does not deserve your high praise.
