I can't tell you how disappointed and alarmed I was to read this particular attack on the higher education system. This essay was filled with so many fall premises and jumps to conclusions that don't connect I felt like I was reading a Charles Krammuther editorial.

First and foremost, the idea that you've jumped to the conclusion that this women who lied on her resume was so smart that she didn't need "no" college degree to do her job was ridiculous on face. The same amount of people who have worked with "educated" people who have no common sense or mangerial skills I am sure have worked with non-credentialed people similiarily. In fact, I would bet that there are more non-credentialed people who have jumped to the top using Machiavellian behavior then those with credentials, because those individuals are typically very insecure and to mask their insecurity they resort to underhandedness and other tactics to root out those who are a threat to them. Happens all the time and you have no way of knowing how this women got to where she got... was it through rooting out, pushing out and stepping on everyone? I am not saying it was but the premise that she's so smart and she didn't need an education was a weak and foolish premise. Secondly, on that note how on earth could you defend someone who lies regardless of why she felt she was entitled to lie... that blows entire argument... this is a character issue and this is a country and time in a country where telling the truth is becoming a joke ....

That being said the most alarming part of this article is your actually blaming higher education for the ills of the working in this country. It is like blaming the unions are you kidding. Did you not notice that three of the Republican candidates don't believe in evolution are not ashamed not to say it on national television? Do you understand that an unfortunate amount of people in this country think a scientific theory is akin to if Col. Mustard did it in the library with the wrench and not a "fact" We have mainstream press spouting two sides to science--as if it's real and why--why, because we are a country that has become so ignorant that most Europeans know more about our history then we do. Get out a map I bet you can't even point out countries in the world.

The point is a democracy only works when those participating are educated and critically think about the ideas and issues they face... to ensure that the people are educated and informed enough to challenge the establishment.

Your premise reminds me of a Chris Rock joke when he would speak to the black's community aversion to education someone would go into the "hood" and say they were getting a Masters and everyone would be a "masters why you need a master...." ha ha

Accessibility to higher education is essential for everyone if they choose to go that route fine, but it should be accessible and affordable and it is necessary. For you to base your argument on what was happening in agrarian society in the beginning of the 20th century was silly... China and India are pumping out more technologically sophisticated workers everyday we are giving out visas at record numbers to bring them here to America..... why because we have priced out college for most people. Your final point of when you go to college you come out with no health insurance and student loans is right. But it is a red herring ... no health insurance (yes we need universal healthcare) has nothing to do with college, and student loans (see recent Bush scandal of course) is just another way to rape the middle class while the "educated" corporate geniuses make a killing.....

so in short its not higher education that's the problem.... it is the government/the complicit MSM/corporate america who has for the past 30 years continued the drumbeat of indoctrination that one - You are your own get it for yourself and don't worry about anyone else, poor people are bad and lazy, and liberals are elites and overeducated... the joke is that is the rich that are lazy, and they are overeducated and selfish and if they can get people like you to buy their crap they'll working and they'll be nickle and diming us till the day we dime...

I so admired Ehrenreich's book but she are DANGEROUSLY OFF THE MARK and I think really needs to deconstruct what she wrote... because in short she is saying... hey, we don know education... that's just a scam...

the scam is NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND, CRUMBLING SCHOOLS, BOOKS THAT NEVER GET READ BECAUSE KIDS ARE BEING TESTED LIKE SOVIET ROBOTS NO CRITICAL THINKING ALOUD, STUDENT LOANS THAT RENDER OUR NEXT GENERATION BROKE AND IN DEBT TO MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS WHO SET THE WHOLE SCAM UP..... and you are blaming colleges for this ...... scary scary scary

I guess they got to you too.....
