Mr. Engelhardt: I don't know how much research you have done on your father, but you might want to to look at the outfit he served in during WWII. Wikipedia has an article on the 1st Air Commando Group that might get you started on his war service. This unit had quite a combat record, and I am sure there are a number of books about it. I have heard of Col. Phillip Cochran, their commander, but I wasn't aware that Col. Alison, of Flying Tiger fame, was his co-commander. War shapes a person's character, and his experiences might help you understand him.

I did some genealogy before 9/11, and found it quite helpful to look at people in the context of their time. There is quite a bit of information on family history available on line and in various libraries. The Mormon Church has libraries on family history, and you don't have to be a Mormon to use them.
