When Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy spoke out against gay marriage, he set off a media firestorm that put a chicken sandwich chain in the middle of the culture wars. With prominent mayors banning Chick-fil-A based on its CEO’s personal beliefs, Nation writer Lee Fang pointed out that it doesn’t really matter what the CEO says but rather what the company itself does: discriminate against its employees, and use its profits to fund anti-gay legislation. Appearing on CBC’s The Current, Fang explains that Chick-fil-A represents a group of businesses whose corporate culture is disdainful of the LGBTQ community, and how politicians’ hasty remarks can help us have a larger conversation about corporations that support hate.
