My thank-you to Mr. Patrick Fitzgerald ...
Thank you from the bottom of my heart and soul for successfully taking on the prosecution of this terrible rot of our sacred American heritage. Thank you for having the courage to begin to lead us all out of the dark and terrible cloud that has blotted out the sun of the true spirit and legacy of American Democracy. My ancestors - Quakers who worked on the underground railroad during the Civil War and helped build the colonies, German immigrants escaping the despots of 19th century Europe, American Indians fleeing and ultimately surviving and triumphing over the murderous relocations of the mid 19th century - they all bow to you for having the balls to confront and ultimately triumph over this frighteningly criminal regime of traitorous cowards. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I CAN'T GET TERRIBLY EXCITED...
I voted for "Not if," but, in fact, the choice between the last four radio buttons was tough. I would have voted "All of the above except 1" if that choice was available. Clearly Libby was the fall guy for a lot more than just perjury and obstruction of justice. He even said so himself. Obviously, the verdict will be appealed and conceivably may even go all the way to the Supreme Court where it would probably stand a good chance of being reversed at this point. Just as clearly, there don't seem to be any follow-ups planned. Fitzgerald already basically excused Rove and Cheney from the investigation and, from his remarks after the verdict, it sounds like he's pretty much done with the whole business. Congress would have to appoint a Special Prosecutor ala Watergate or Monicagate to go any farther. Plus, I doubt Libby will do any hard time except maybe ten years hard labor as a Halliburton executive, but if it looks like he's heade for one to three at Club Fed, Bush will probably pardon him. And the whole thing IS a distraction from Iraq. Still and all, it's a hell of a lot better than Libby just walking, which wouldn't have suprised me a hell of a lot.
Posted by w_m_bear at 03/6/2007
I couldn't vote all the answers are tilted to the left. Was Justice Done NO!!! Why? Because this investigation should have never gone that far. Federal Prosecutors knew that there was no crime but wouldn't quite till they could get somebody for something Libby was charged for possibly lying to the jury. THE JURY FOUND SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE TO CONVICT BECAUSE OF OTHERS TESTIMONIES, WHOS TO SAY THEY DIDN'T LIE TO SAVE THERE BACON. For 2yrs we wasted millions of tax payer money on nothing. Till we had put enough time and distance in the mix to confuse anyone. I guess scooter should have taken a lesson from the Clintons, "I don't remember that. I have no recollection of that senator." Wake up slackers if you would ever make something of yourself and watch the government take it for someone else we'll see what you say. Maybe someday you'll be part of a witchhunt just because you believed in something others disagreed with. I MIGHT VOTE IF YOU ACTUALLY GAVE REAL CHOICES INSTEAD OF LEFT WING BS.

This is a silly poll. My answer is "All of the above." John Howarth
Posted by howarth at 03/7/2007
Apparently bugfat1965 only cares about officials lying if they are Democrats. I don't excuse Bill Clinton for lying to a grand jury though impeachment was utterly disproportionate. I don't excuse Libby either; he was convicted on two counts of lying and should pay a price. But Republicans love to pardon, particularly if there are other vulnerable people in high places.
Posted by gemstone at 03/7/2007
Too bad that they couldn't get Cheney and Rove. Really, several of the choices you offered were apt. One wonders if the human race is worth saving!
Posted by MaryAlvord at 03/7/2007
Convicting "Scooter" is but the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Anyone with even the slightest semblance of integrity and intelligence knows that the Bush administration has given an entire new meaning to the word "scoundrel" and that they are all corrupted by power and privilege.
Posted by maggie2 at 03/7/2007
It is primarily an indictment of American Media: first to the journalist panderers including Russert who placed their desire to keep incestuous lines of communication open rather than to serve their profession and country by going after a story handed to them by their "sources"; secondly, because this smug relationship between the media and the policy makers made it possible for those who disclosed the name of a covert CIA operative to escape indictment even if it ultimately would not lead to a conviction due to the high threshold of proof required.

The first brick destroyed in the wall of lies, deceit, and criminality erected to block off the destruction of the Constitution of the United States by the Republican Reich. For those who remember the Nixon years, the final drive to impeachment began with the minor prosecution of the Watergate burglars. Although there appears to be little backbone in the elected Democrats, they may be, finally, cattle-prodded to do their sworn duty to uphold the Constitution "against all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC". The failure to impeach is the greatest travesty in violation of law and sworn oaths by the cowards in Congress.
The depth of the criminal conduct of this administration and its supporting legislative sycophants will only be revealed through the subpoena powers of Congress during an impeachment process. When the rest of the followers' freedom from jail is on the line, they will fall over themselves to rat out the perpetrators of criminal policy, Bush/Cheney. Until that time, the treasury will continue to be raided and the military will be decimated.
IMPEACH, NOW!
Posted by jemorg at 03/7/2007
I would hope this gives Congress the courage to go after the rest of this corrupt regime. It's too bad we can't impeach the mainstream media also though. They are just as complicit in this whole Iraq mess as the lying jackasses in the White House. As for the comments by "bugfat", who can take anyone seriously who calls himself bugfat?
Posted by rmanzer at 03/7/2007
I don't understand why the press is letting President Bush off so easily. Before he said that he would fire anyone who leaked Valerie Plame's name he must have asked his staff whether they were involved. If not he's demonstrated that he is a very poor executive. If the staff were honest, then he deliberately missled the American people and should be impeached. If the staff lied to the President they should be fired and there should be no talk of a pardon. A President must demand honesty from his staff.

As I never tire of repeating, the salient quality one sees, time after time after time after time, in wingnuts is that they are just plain dumb. Bugfat comes to The Nation site and complains about a leftwing bias to its goofy poll. Whoa! Stop the presses! That's like going to the Vatican and complaining about the Pope's bias toward Catholics. He should stay glued to Fox News for fair and balanced reporting. The wingnuts are always complaining about the condescending, arrogant Libs. Well, f'crissake, you bloody idiots, if y'all would just PRETEND to have some sense....
Posted by bookmanjb at 03/7/2007
I hope that Mr. Libbey, in spite of the fact that I think he's innocent, has the book thrown at him. I understand that this would mean a possible 30 year sentence. Since I think that bush/cheney promised him a pardon at the end of their term, or a "slap on the wrist," he acquiesced to their request to accept the rap. If he gets 30 years, I think he would start to squeal like Valachi and take down bush/cheney so they could BOTH be impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors. Then all 3 of them could be cell-mates. Maybe it could be arranged that BIG BUBBA would be there too. That should be interesting.
Posted by gmcvanguy at 03/7/2007
I agree with GEOFFB. The media needs to insist on action from the shrub and keep on asking the same question when he laughs and refuses to address the question. By the fourth or fifth time a reporter asks him the same question, and he calls an end to the press conference, I bet he begins to understand: "We're mad aas hell, and we're not going to take it anymore."

America seems to be behind Alice's looking-glass, down the rabbit hole and swilling tea with the Mad Hatter but can anything be more insane than letting Presidents pardon one another and their henchmen? This ain't no partisan thang. Clinton loosed the Whitewater mob etc. and BumbleArty Ford saved the Nixon legacy ...(the swell guy who gave us Rumsfeld-Cheney). Now Bush-the-Littler is the Neo-con church-key. Gee, guess what he is going to do. Can anybody suggest a strategy to retreive a Democratic Presidency which is accountable to law? Why does Congress even permit this?

Whatever happened to Shrub's saying that he'd fire anyone found out to have broke the law on this, or whatever it is he said, don't remember the exact words.
Here, I'm going to have to disagree with most of the folks on this thread on impeachment. DO NOT impeach Shrub! Rather, send him to the Hague!!! Have him charged with war crimes! Let him try to get pardoned around that.
I'm not just being flip either. I truly think that is the only way America can regain any standing with world opinon. Tho, even that has been over rated in US media since I think 'Nam.

Which is more worthy of impeachment: Mutually consensual fellatio between of-age adults…or violent, unconsensual sodomy of a nation, a world, a democratic ideal by brutal, greedy ideologues?
Yes, of course justice has been advanced. Of course Libby should do time at "Club Fed" for having agreed to be used. Same with the generals who agreed to turn a blind eye to the horrors veterans have been enduring at Walter Reed and countless other institutions.
But justice will not truly have been served until the real agents of these evils have been held to account. Let's hope that moment won;t be delayed until history wields its hammer.
Posted by Scarabus at 03/7/2007
I would have to agree with three of the choices offered: Libby is just a fall guy; with the appeal and possibility of a pardon, it is too soon to say; and not if this is the end of investigation. President Cheney, his talking puppet George, George's talking puppet Condi, and Rummy, at least, belong behind bars for life, and since none of them will be convicted or incarcerated, justice will not be served.

Impeachment, for "president Cheney" and creepy "Shrub" is too good. A charge of High Treason would be less humiliating than have those two in office. Clinton 0 deaths, Shrub and Dark Lord thousands. Where is the anger over what this Adm. has done to our country. This trial just shows that sex is bad, starting war under false pretense, outing CIA operatives, misleading the country is not a problem.
Posted by darclay at 03/7/2007
Scooter's conviction shed's the light on Cheney's complicity in wrecking Valerie Plames life, because he wanted the war against Iraq, and lied and lied, and lied, and will be pardoned by Bush if they are not impeached. Both were complicit in the 922 attacks see Nichol's ompeachment in Vermont story.
Everyone knows this is so.

The truth of the Libby case is that nearly everyone wins. The Wilsons are cashing in on their victimhood, Libby will write a book and go on the lecture circuit, and the jurors are appearing on the talk shows. Like my wife says, "Corruption in Washington D.C. is a cottage industry." The loser in this affair is the American public.

Did any of our CIA covert agents actually die because of the politically motivated gaffe by Cheney/Rove/Libby? Will we ever know? Was Plame taken out of action because of her work in Iran--Cheney's next target?

I am very glad that Libby was found guilty, but im not sure that it really means anything.....is something going to change? will the make the democrates get a backbone and stand up for the people of the united states?? I hopes so, but I dont think so. It makes me sad. This administration has done what they wanted from the beginging and no one has stoped them, and i dont think a guilty verdict on Libby is going to change the way our country is being run. The way things are now Anna Nicole is more important than Walter Reid......i just want to cry.

It is the testimony that implicates Cheney, and even Bush that we should pay attention to. Do we need to find smoking guns for impeaching their sorry asses? Well, court testimony in this case is a rich trove.
I still don't understand why Fitzgerald didn't go after Rove; I guess Karl was just a bit more careful.

Page 204, 9/11 Report : May 2001, Bush put Cheney in charge of "preparations for managing a possible attack by WMD..."! Cheney would later fail to follow up on "Niger" with the CIA & end up telling Libby the name of an undercover CIA agent, during a time of War! That should be Treason !

I think that Libby is a very small pawn in this very large powerful game of "Risk" and power. The Bush family have been putting their agenda's in place for decades. George's grandfather and father along with Richard Nixon most likely had their dirty little hands all over the J.F.K assassination. Covering up crimes is just one of the many games they like to play. If and when this country can expose these evil men for what and whom they really are, then and only then can we begin to heal. This country and the entire world will then be vindicated and freed from the power hungry grasp of these skull and bones members with no moral or testicular fortitude. We need to convict President Bush and Vice President Cheney for whatever we can and bring them to justice to show all the rest of their associates that they will never again gain the power over the United States citizens and the people of the World ever again !!! Long Live The Truth, The Whole Truth, and Nothing But The Truth !!!!!

Yes, Libby is just the tip of the iceberg. This entire Kabal is in it as deep as any administation ever, the Nixon era looks tame comparatively. The Bushes go way back in corruption to the days of Prescott Bush, the grandaddy of the pack, who under the auspices of various company names and partnerships helped finance the Nazis. The Bushes belonged to Nazi groups into the 50s, when they left them because of how this would look in the political realm. The American People voted for corruption when they voted for Bloody George, as well as nonsensical war, and the disolving of our freedoms that we are supposedly fighting for. We suffer from amnesia in this country coupled with plain old naivete, and stupidity. They say the people deserve who they vote for...maybe so. I remember when people were saying Gore and Bush are the same, no difference. This couldn't have been farther from the truth. Now the left thinks that the guy they kicked to the curb in 2000 - Gore - is their new savior. This is serious business, and Americans need to wake up from their stupor.

Bugfat compares the Clinton White House Affair to this White House who lied to get us into war, killed thousands, condoned torture, and the list goes on. Ken Starr and his inbeciles started looking into something to get Clinton right away, and Clinton lived with this nonsense most of his Presidency. And he was still one of the best. None of it stuck - Whitewater was a nonstarter, and none of the other BS had a chance, I mean travel gate, are you kidding me? Finally they caught Bill Clinton in a lie to cover up an affair that was non of anyone's business. Susan McDougal was sent to hard time, because she wouldn't agree to lie for Ken Starr, this was a travesty. What are we Russia? Bush was given a pass. There was a completely different standard. The Repugs never have any integrity or values, and will do anything no matter how immoral to slander someone. Sometimes I wish the Dems were as dirty...but we just never can sink that low.

WELL, PARDON ME...
The judge will give Libby 30 years? I seriously, SERIOUSLY doubt it. I'm guessing 1-3 is probably about it, and Libby will (I'm predicting) EITHER win on appeal OR receive a Presidential pardon that will simply short-circuit the whole process. Have we come to expect anything better from Bush, Cheney, and their ilk?

Yes, of course Libby was guilty as charged. But he didn't come up with this himself. Investigations MUST continue. And Bush/Cheney MUST be impeached then there won't be any question of pardons. Libby's conviction is only the first step in bringing back integrity to this government and pride in our nation.
Posted by Dale-Z at 03/9/2007
I've been hearing so much spin on how the liberals are demonizing "Scooter" Libby, and he didn't deserve the 4 convictions. However I believe the real Libby story is about the break- in at the Niger Embassy in Italy and Berlusconi bringing the forged uranium ore sale documents {determined by the CIA} to Bush which he knowingly lied about to the American people to justify the Iraqi war. Why is this not being investigated? This is an impeachable offense!
Posted by Spyder at 03/9/2007
Libby will be pardoned and there's nothing we can do about it. Every president pardons loyal operatives who fall on their sword during the administration's scandals. It's a shame to think what they did to Clinton for such a trivial offense and yet Cheney doesn't even get indicted when he clearly had everything to do with this very serious scandal. You have to hand it to these guys, they know how to play the game...

Actually, Spyder, if simply lying to the American people were an impeachable offense, probably every single American president would've had to be impeached. However, Bush has certainly (and impeachably) broken the law in a number of other instances, including the Plame outing, wiretapping, suspension of habeas corpus (PRIOR to Congress suspending it, etc., etc.

I do believe that congress now has to take the initiative to investigate the president and vice president and bring them to justice. Both they and the corporate companies have illegally profited from this unnecessary and oh so conveniently so-called "War on Terror". We know that if Bush and Cheney are not stopped then they and their families and their associates and their families will all become richer and more powerful after they leave office. It is stifling what oil will make men do to their fellow men at all costs. Stop the "War on Terror" now!!! Let us begin the "Action for Peace" now, before it is too late!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe this prosecution is basically meaningless. The Great Experiment of America is over, unless everyone of these murderous criminals Bush; Cheney; Rice; Powell; Rove; Wolfowitz; Pearl; etc. - are brought to Justice! The entire Administration should be in front of an international criminal court for war crimes and crimes and crimes against Humanty. Also, every enabling Democrat that was too cowardly or comfortable to challenge the bullies, should be banished from government. Or maybe they should all be exiled to Iraq (outside the 5 star 'Green Zone') or Palestine.
Posted by blueCedars at 03/11/2007
I am a loyal Nation subscriber and reader, but the poll was skewed after the first question. The issue in the trial was his guilt or not guilty. Every other question was collateral, including question of Iraq, Cheney and pardon. He will be pardoned, but that will not remove the stinging rebuke by the verdict to the prez and vice prez.
Posted by jeffersonjr at 03/11/2007
The relatively inconclusive trial results indicate what a poor state our government is in at this moment. Everybody knows, including Judith Miller, who alluded to the probability in her article on the subject after her release from jail, that Dick Cheney is the culprit. He seems to think that playing games like a corporate executive is appropriate for an elected officeholder in a democracy, and dirty tricks like the Plame outing, while possibly conventional in the corporate world, simply suck in the political atmosphere of a democracy. Worse, he expects to be protected from public scrutiny, hides from the media as if he was some kind of precious movie star, and snivels at mass media criticism of his essentially childish manners as VP. All in all, Dick Cheney reminds me of Mr. Potter, the jaded banker in the movie, "It's A Wonderful Life." He even looks like the old buzzard. But he's also an exponent of what Americans should expect to receive in a political atmosphere literally run and maintained by the corporate world. Until that changes, and until the gold rush finally ends, we can expect even deeper distortions. Glad I don't have kids to witness the depths of the America to come.
Posted by faceshaker at 03/11/2007
Outing a CIA agent shouldn't even be a crime. Libby or Cheney or whoever should get a medal for that. What they should be tried for is crimes against humanity, crimes against the peace, war crimes, conspiracy against Congress and the American people, criminal negligence, corruption, probably a few other things besides. But why exactly am I supposed to care about Valerie Plame?
Posted by rakhia at 03/11/2007

What truly disgusts me is that the news media has successfully obscured the case unfortunately dumbing down the American public in the process. I believe this was intentional. People like Chris Matthews, Wolf Blitzer, Lou Dobbs, and the other frauds sit at tables with the other talking heads trying to make the trial sound confusing for the sole purpose of soothing their conscience because they actively sold a pack of lies to the public when they wanted to attack Iraq under false pretenses. In the process of making the case for war for this administration, the press did things that any American would love to have seen in a live broadcast of the trial. Alas, that was conveniently not allowed in the interest of "national security". The CIA leak case could not be pursued because someone lied and obstructed justice to impede the process. That person was I Lewis Libby (one of the architects of the preplanned Iraq invasion). And THAT is what he was charged with and convicted of. Lying under oath and obstructing justice. Real hard to understand.
Today I heard Andrea Mitchell say that "polls show that most Americans think Libby should be pardoned" A blatant lie:
