Those with incomes of more than a million dollars a year make up only .12% of the American population. Conversely, 44% of the members of Congress are millionaires.

Last night, The Ed Show was about whether the millionaires in Congress are out of touch with the American public (In a word: yes).

The Nation‘s Katrina vanden Heuvel thinks this can be a defining moment for Democrats. "Obama has to follow through on the promises he made in his presidential campaign to be a tough champion for working people in this country, and expose Republicans for who they are: hypocrites who are ready to give handouts to the connected, but won’t give a hand up to those who are in economic pain in this country."

Otherwise, as Ed points out, "Obama’s base will fade away."
