Tea Partier and deadbeat dad Joe Walsh, who fought against paying over $100,000 in child support to his family, loves to attack Tammy Duckworth, who fought and sacrificed an arm and two legs for her country. This time Walsh is going after Duckworth for not shutting up about her service. This is pretty ironic, given that Walsh suffers from one of the worst cases of verbal diarrhea recorded in history. (He yelled at his constituents in a coffee shop, told the president to stop lying, said the president was elected only because he was African-American, mocked Duckworth’s service on multiple occasions.) And as recently as yesterday, Walsh doubled down on his criticism on Duckworth, saying, “I do believe she talks about her service too much. And as a voter in this district, I would want to know where she stands on issues.”

Not having served himself, Joe wouldn’t know what it’s like to talk about service. So, Walsh contrasts Duckworth to John McCain, whose supposed stoicism, Walsh claims, is typical of true heroes. The implication is that Tammy “Blabber Mouth” Duckworth, on the other hand, is not a true hero. Walsh even suggests that McCain was so reluctant to talk about his military past, only physical abuse from his advisers got him to do so. Paul Waldman at The American Prospect disproves “the myth that won’t die” of McCain’s silence, pointing to several examples of McCain referring to his service.

Here, the point isn’t McCain’s focus on his military history; the point is that, as usual, Joe Walsh is making claims not supported by the facts in order to attack and distort his opponent’s heroism and sacrifice.

Above is a video I made that also contrasts Joe’s lies with the truth. This isn’t the first time Walsh’s reprehensible behavior inspired me to make a video. Who knows what he’ll come up with next. Look forward to more outrageous Walshisms from Joe, and videos from me.

Can we count on you?

In the coming election, the fate of our democracy and fundamental civil rights are on the ballot. The conservative architects of Project 2025 are scheming to institutionalize Donald Trump’s authoritarian vision across all levels of government if he should win.

We’ve already seen events that fill us with both dread and cautious optimism—throughout it all, The Nation has been a bulwark against misinformation and an advocate for bold, principled perspectives. Our dedicated writers have sat down with Kamala Harris and Bernie Sanders for interviews, unpacked the shallow right-wing populist appeals of J.D. Vance, and debated the pathway for a Democratic victory in November.

Stories like these and the one you just read are vital at this critical juncture in our country’s history. Now more than ever, we need clear-eyed and deeply reported independent journalism to make sense of the headlines and sort fact from fiction. Donate today and join our 160-year legacy of speaking truth to power and uplifting the voices of grassroots advocates.

Throughout 2024 and what is likely the defining election of our lifetimes, we need your support to continue publishing the insightful journalism you rely on.
