Warren Hinckle, a recipient of the H.L. Mencken Award, is a longtime columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle and Examiner and the former editor of Ramparts, Scanlan's Monthly and Francis Ford Coppola's City magazine. He is editor and publisher of The Argonaut in San Francisco.
He said he wanted his ashes shot out of a cannon. "A great funeral" was what he wanted, he told his son. Then he walked into the kitchen and shot himself dead in the head.
