Join The Nation and the Rosie’s Law Coalition for a virtual conversation reflecting on the legacy of the Hyde Amendment and Rosie Jimenez, moderated by Nation deputy editor Regina Mahone and featuring Nation abortion access correspondent Amy Littlefield, Rosie’s Law legislative campaign coordinator Ana Rodriguez, and reproductive justice activist Nancy Cárdenas Peña.

This fall marks 50 years since the passage of the Hyde Amendment. The ban on federal funding of abortion is the most significant yet under-acknowledged anti-abortion policy in U.S. history, restricting access to a fundamental right through a budget rider. According to one estimate, it’s forced more than a million people on Medicaid to give birth who would otherwise have gotten an abortion. October 3, 2026 also marks the 49th anniversary of the death of Rosie Jimenez, a 27-year-old mother who was denied care from a clinic because she could not afford it and instead got an unsafe abortion that took her life. Rosie is considered the first documented victim of Hyde.

This virtual discussion will leave ample time for audience Q&A.

The event is free but registration is required. Attendees will receive a Zoom link in the email confirmation after registration.
