Pulitzer Prize for biography for their American PThe Editors We warmly congratulate contributing editor Kai Bird, along with his co-author (and Nation contributor) Martin Sherwin, on winning the Pulitzer Prize for biography for their American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer (an excerpt ran in our April 25, 2005, issue). It is a formidable work, twenty-five years in the making. Kai worked here in the late 1970s and much of the 1980s as assistant editor, associate editor and columnist.
Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg, who died April 17, aged 84, was a provocative, liberal-minded Conservative rabbi, a scholar and teacher and a prolific author; he served as president of the American Jewish Congress and vice president of the World Jewish Congress. He contributed several pieces to The Nation and reported on Israel in 1950.
