Last week, the House Appropriations Committee approved a $94 billion supplemental bill with war spending but no “timetable for withdrawal from Iraq or binding restrictions on the wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan.” The Nation Institute’s Tom Hayden suggests “the desire to protect the president may shy Democrats away from demands that were routinely made of the Bush administration,” the most important of which is a coherent exit strategy from the escalating war along the Afghan border. With Congress expected to vote on the bill this week, now is the time to contact your representatives and demand greater oversight and accountability.
