Slouching Towards Faux

Right before our eyes

The News Corps British tabloids may have committed criminal violations of British law in their perverted quest for “news,” and Patricia Williams accurately states that Fox New’s “fair and balanced” slogan is a joke. However, Fox and News corp are committing a graver assault on our political system daily. Yet no one seems to object to the massive amounts openly paid to leading Republican politicians.

Many of the more “popular” Republicans are or were paid Fox commentators: Santorum, Huckabee, Gingrich, Palin, and Perino. There is nothing more comical than Chris Wallace touting his exclusive interviews with Fox commentator Palin, except for Hannity’s obligatory reference to the wacko Gingrich as “Mr. Speaker.” But even politicians not on the direct payroll are well compensated for the Fox appearances. Can you quantify the value of the adulation heaped on Bachman during appearances on Hannity and elsewhere? Fox is a free soapbox in a friendly venue; commentators regularly permit solicitation for donations and endorse thier guests candidacies. Is loyalty the quid pro quo for those politicians paid in cash and and or publicity? Do Mr. Murdoch’s media and other varied business interest benefit? In this regard the criminal behavior in England and “employment” and free publicity practices here reach common ends through different means. English politicians refrain from harming Murdoch’s interests due to fear; in America they are subject to a “friendlier” form of persuasion.
