Stephen Cohen: What the START Treaty Means for Russian-American Relations

Russia and US

I generally agree with Dr. Cohen's comments. His comments on Russia being the Wal-Mart of the weapons trade was of particular interest. I differ on the value of the missile defense system, which I regard as more corporate welfare and worthless. I would equate to the Dreamliner, which has also has had a hard time getting off the ground. It is definitely not worth a positive relationship with Russia. Any differences with Russia should have disappeared with the Soviet Union and the cold war. I do not like the idea of NATO moving into Russia's sphere of influence. I subscribe to Washington's view on entangling alliances, and President Wilson's view on self-determination, which means every country is responsible for its own fate.
