Although I voted here for Al G, actually there isn't much to be thankful for anywhere one looks in the US. Author Naomi Wolfe has, alas, called it correctly, as American democracy comes to a close.

As an anti-war military veteran, really I gotta say that the turning from conservative gung-ho and directed military person into one who questions the abuse of military power is the single most defining event of my life. It is a process that requires a stepping outside of a defined and structured reality package.
Trauma is often a catalyst. Other situations in which individuals find themselves in unacceptable circumstances require dissent. In the case of the U.S. military, this ongoing flow of individual dissenters can be seen as a movement, and as a community. We are still a minority, but the support networks are now more established and the integration of dissenting military service folks with the larger dissenting community has to be the larger effect.
I was as stressed out by my act of disobedience and the dissention experience as I was by what I experienced in Vietnam. It is important to stay informed about in-service dissenters and what happens to them after they are discharged. The burden of "bad" discharges, the loss of benefits, including the loss of PTSD and trauma counseling for those who were in Iraq and dissented afterwards are doubly concerning. There should be a network of counselors and therapists for those who suffer distress because they took a stand against an abusive military-political situation. The Vet Centers are primarily directed towards the experience of trauma, but the experience of being ostracized by one's peers and one's family of origen is like being in exile without leaving. I am in exile in my own country, and the rebuilding of inner character requires nothing less that a rebuilding of one's psyche and finding alternative community. http://www.couragetoresist.org/x/

I'm a believer that it is starting to look like our best hope in salvaging our democracy is ironically a military coup by the leaders of our military who still have an inkling of what america used to be. It's obvious that the majority of our so-called "elected representitives" , especially the leadership, have an agenda that precludes what is best for our country right now...and that would be the removal of the criminals who have been laying waste to our democracy for these past almost 7 years.

King George's War will end but Climate Change will continue unless we decide to do something about it.

Unfortuately Don, military coups result in military juntas and dictatorship. Civilian coups often end in anarchy and the resultant fascist-for-god feifdoms. Sadly, our only hope is our elected reps... Boy! that sure sucks!

Who's responsible for these incredibly skewed choices. which is you favorite consumable apples, bananas, beer, grits or skoal?

A military that refuses duty, that is, a rebellion to "stand down" is within the provenance of acceptable behavior. That is different from a coup. That is to say that the military ought to consider owning itself, by setting limits of behavior that enforces peacekeeping and does not allow for being used or manipulated into aggressive profit-making war faring.

NO PROBLEM WITH THIS ONE...
The U.S. occupation of Iraq is currently the major issue facing the American people (and the world, for that matter). Anything that pressures the current administration to rethink its sheer idiocy (if that's not a contradication in terms) is a huge positive piece of news -- to wit, the rise of antiwar sentiment in the military.
Gonzales? Who cares? We all knew Bush would replace him with someone just as bad....
Climate change? Feh. Climate change we have always with us....
"Citizen voices"? Feh.
FaceBook? Feh.

HAH! I NOTICE THAT MY VOTE...
Made the number for "Anti-war sentiment" 666!
Posted by w_m_bear at 11/24/2007
Clearly, Gonzales' resignation has only allowed yet another AG to proclaim that this President is above the law. So it was easy to rule out that. And the two public issues that are not considered in our U.S. Constitution, nor Bill of Rights I also found not worthy of serious consideration. I was left with a short mental debate between the growing anti-war sentiment of our military and the world-wide acceptance of the growing dangers of Climate Change. The news in Pakistan shows the dire straits of a country under military control. The fighters in our military forces have been trained extensively to follow orders under all circumstances(even to the point of being brain-washed!) If they continue their very laudable but mild rebellion, a general may end up standing in. Could we even face a military junta and lose our democracy? Who can say what direction that might lead. . . The ultimate danger we face as part of the human race is a dramatic change in climate. Today, scientists say we already face a 20% chance of a sudden change with our current CO2 level and it will take 100 years to decrease without adding any more. We are not yet doing much about it, but at least the conversation has begun. If Climate Change continues, we will not remember the U.S. invasion of Iraq. If the Change is enough, we may no longer exist.

Albertvil,
You are clearly uninformed about the military, who is in it, and how they operate. Please don't think that soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen and women are some sort of unthinking robots.
We are intelligent, educated, and committed. I will gladly stack up my intellect, education and commitment against yours or anyone else who post here. We take an solemn oath to defend the Constitution, and then we honor our oath. If we had not done so, you would not have the rights which you enjoy right now.
As a Marine officer who has seen the horrors of war and survived when many around me did not, I object to the war in Iraq more that you can even comprehend. The problem as I see it is we desperately need to do a "status check" to see where we really are with regard to Iraq, decide where we need to be, and then determine how to get there. Finally, and most importantly, we need to act. Posting our anger and frustration on line gets us exactly nowhere.

Don, a military coup is NEVER the answer. A citizen coup is ALWAYS the answer.
Posted by jamesrlarge at 11/26/2007
5 choices and they're all crap. Why? Why not 5 or 6 really serious political events? 5 or 6 that really matter? Because The Nation is never really serious about politics. That's the problem with being a left wing partisan publication. Your choices are always anti-Conservative, anti-Republican or anti-Bush. The operative word here is "always". The Nation is as full of crap as The National Review or Rush Limbaugh. No balance, no credibility.

My best hopes comes from the unraveling of the Capitalist System we see every day on Wall Street with the U$ becoming worthless and the rise of a strong Russia with a great leader like Putin.
Posted by Looter at 11/27/2007
"What political event are you most thankful for?" Sarkozy winning in France! Merkel in Germany! The virtually completed defeat of al Qaeda in Iraq! These things bode well for the future.
