As much as my heart is with the Dixie Chicks, I had to vote for Al Gore. His documentary communicates with urgency the dangers of global warming to the entire world. It transcends national boundries.

No way...Letters from Iwa Jima and Flags of Our Fathers were much better films.

Inconvenient Truth, nominee for best Fantasy movie.

Surprisingly effective for Gore. THE big issue of our time, the elephant in the room, that Gore got the world to recognize.

Global warming, globalization, talibanisque christians, right wing radio, and war all stem from the same source: our fascist system where corporations are super-citizens. You've got to go with Nader and his fight against these forces.

I'm afraid this generation believes that if you are killed or kill someone, all you have to do is hit the reset button. It amazes me the self-proclaimed pro-lifers can become cheer-leaders for a war of choice. dryheatpete 2/22/07

The most compelling progressive movie of the year? Children of Men!

I'm surprised Iraq in Fragment [iraqinfragments.com], My Country, My Country [mycountrymycountry.com], or any of the other excellent documentaries on Iraq from last year.
Both those films are nominated for best documentary and are better than Inconvenient Truth (though it is very good). I wish there were an Oscar for best performance in a documentary for Al Gore, so more people would see at least one of these films.

The reason I voted for An Unreasonable Man is that it is well done showing the pros and cons of Nader as articulated by friend and foe. But most of all, Nader and his actions reveals the stark contrast on many levels between our current culture and one that I believe we should have in the US. Thiis movie is not a slam dunk as An Inconvenient Truth and the others listed in the poll. This movie forces one to consider the pros and cons not just of Nader personally, but of what he stands for both in the 60's and 70's and also his running for President and the opposition to that by the conventual politics and culture.

Boy, do I agree with the second comment. The Doc. "Iraq for sale" or something like that should at least be on the list. Oh, dry heat pete has a Great point as well.

A notion: Why select only only one thereby replicating the dominant (read: oppressive) culture's obsession with pecking orders, winner/loser dichotomies, etc. In short, this ranking tends to relegate the non-winners as inferior when, as we know, each of these films - and the brave entries exposing the Iraq nightmare for what it is, should be far more widely disseminated. And more eagerly sought! So Hollywood, move on.

I voted for Jesus Camp. If you want to understand why there is popular support for destroying the environment and ignoring Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth, you have to realize that a significant portion of the American public believes the rapture is imminent. You'll be shocked after you see how these kids are brainwashed into rejecting all science and rationality.

Letters & Flags are the best. Funny, I never regarded them as "progressive" films, not in The Nation's sense of the term. Just powerful films

I came here to vote for Pan's Labyrinth--why isn't it on the list, it's the most interesting political film I've seen in a long time.
Posted by cometjo at 02/26/2007
I voted for 'Jesus Camp' because I have been the target of the Born-Agains'(neither Religious nor riht) hate crimes is Colo. Springs for almost 5 years. I'm part Native Amer. and worship in the privacy of my yard. 1)They've 'taught' their children to hate me saying I worship satan and 2)used their children, 8-yrs-old and under, as part of their gang to stalk and witness adult activity (some sexual) against and claim I am the aggressor. I'm a 30 yr. resident and have aquired a police record and suffer 24/7 abuse from these religionists. The use of their children is Child Abuse at minimum and creating a generation trained to hate.

Science people are starting to speak out but they have allowed the narrow Jewish religions to have a free pass which has led to the insanity we have to deal with now. Everyone should give a copy of Richard Dawkin's THE GOD DELUSION to a religionoid. .... and LETTER TO A CHRISTIAN NATION by Sam Harris. Bush could use them too- I suspect his reading has improved some. ...and... Nader should be president.

The Christo-fascists exposed. The role of Religion in eroding democratic regimes. The reign of superstition over reason. The reason that the Bush Majority ( plus the Supreme Court) is composed of these low-forehead mouth-breathers
