We are witnessing the self-destruction of the GOP. They did it themselves, and I'm not about to drag out a crying towel. For years, this was not the "Party of Lincoln", but rather the "Party of Reagan"...bad enough there, but bush killed it in a dark alley.

First they kicked the Progressives out of the party, followed by"moderates", and now they are prisoners of a rigid ideology that doesn't allow change. The economic conservatives have jumped to the Corporate Democrats in the Democratic Party. I don't see how they can make it as a political party? We are becoming a one party state!

The GOP. has long enough been the obstructionist party. Seems to me they have done enough damage to our economy. Their conservatism theory has mostly tied the hands of working people, and promoted union busting and given to the wealthy as far back as I remember. So why do working folks make errors or exaggeration on loan applications? Because it is encouraged; In order to keep up with the Jonses'. Make a living wage?! What are ya Commie?!!

Posted by rasputin195 at 05/4/2009: Wishful thinking. Political parties never die. They make a few changes and wait for the other party to "screw the pooch" - which is guarenteed to happen.
Posted by cogitations at 05/5/2009: Wait until you see the damage the Obamacons do to the economy...2010 will be very interesting.

Even though the GOP has clear links to the current economic disaster, all most supporters of this party can say is "Yeah, but look what Obama is doing... it's going to be so bad." The problem came from GOP thinking. God himself (or herself) would struggle with this mess. Even though Obama will not be perfect, I wish him luck. GOP into the wilderness, please.

pyeatte: "Political parties never die".
You seem to have forgotten the Know Nothings, the Bull Moose Party, the Whigs and numerous others. It can be argued that the Whigs became the Republicans with Lincoln, but there was little of Whig/Republican in relationship of the day.
Political parties die all the time, especially when they refuse to change with the times, or at the least acknowledge that change is in the air. The GOP is headed to oblivion, they are losing members every day, disillusioned Americans that have seen what damage they have done...and I say, Good Riddance.
