David Brooks and the “Vigorous Virtues”
David Brooks’s column today repeats the same theme that Rubio advanced in his speech: government programs such as Social Security and Medicaid have destroyed the virtues of “self-reliance, personal responsiblity, industriousness and a passion for freedom” that Americans once possessed. Obviously, this revisionism is part of a propaganda campaign aimed at the younger generations, those who have no link to Depression-era America and what the New Deal and Great Society programs accomplished. The struggling young folks see themselves as being industrious but thwarted by lazy old folks. Youth is stiffled as retirees get ever-larger slices of an ever-shrinking economic pie. We need to fight back and educate all Americans that Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefit all of us, and that if these programs are cut back, we will all lose.
