I saw Matthew Hoh on TV, and he has valid concerns about Afghanistan. I also read a redacted version of McChrystal's "request" available on the FP magazine website. Their analysis of the basic facts on the ground seem similar, but McChrystal would stay and Hoh would leave.
McChrystal wants three three-star generals under him to handle the same number of regions. Generals, at that level, would normally be corp commanders. There is no way in hell that they will have the number of American troops to command in accordance with their rank, but their opinions would carry some extra weight with that rank.
I don't think we are looking at Phoenix programs 0r "free-fire zones." Obama says we are going to stay in the region, so we will just have to wait and see what happens.
