Say 'No' to Africom--No US Military Command in Africa
In February 2007 the Department of Defense announced the creation of a new US Africa Command infrastructure, named AFRICOM, to "coordinate all US military and security interests throughout the continent." The Granny Peace Brigade will be observing the 40th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination and views the AFRICOM program as a direct violation of and threat to his dream of peace, social justice and racial harmony. Our second Teach-in will feature Horace G. Campbell (professor of political science, Syracuse University); Emira Woods (co-director of Foreign Policy in Focus at the Institute for Policy Studies); Frida Berrigan (senior research associate, Arms Trade Resource Center at World Policy Institute); Sonia Sanchez (poet, activist, member of the Philadelphia Granny Peace Brigade); and the New York City Step Team for Social Justice (dance troupe). Moderator: Vinie Burrows, actor, writer, member of the NY Granny Peace Brigade. Unitarian Church of All Souls, Reidy Friendship Hall, 1157 Lexington Ave. (79-80th streets). Check the website, call 212- 533-2125 or e-mail.
