Fear of a Black President

By Media Matters for America

August 3, 2009

Right wing commentators would rather stir up racial prejudice than enter into a serious debate about the future of the nation's healthcare system.

With Congress going into summer recess on August 7, there is a lot of unfinished business over the healthcare bill. One would think that Republicans together with a number of mainstream media outlets would worry about health and welfare of millions of Americans. Yet, what is still in the news these days is talks about birther movement and attacks on President Obama. One comment on Henry Louis Gates scandal - and Obama is labeled a "racist" with "a militant black reaction." While racial divide in America clearly continues to persist, at the end of the day, all of us need health insurance. Maybe it's time for Republicans to consider that.
