Chicago Striker Speaks Out

Grit TV with Laura Flanders did an incisive segment on the worker sit-in at the Chicago-based Republic Windows and Doors plant this week. Mark Meinster, an organizer with the United Electrical Workers, gave an on-the-ground report from the protest site, explaining the group's resolution to stay as long as necessary to have their grievances addressed. Some 200 workers were laid off earlier this month when the company maxed out its Bank of America credit line and the bank refused to extend further loans. As a result, workers were dismissed and denied severance and vacation payment guaranteed to them. Many critics have decried the move by Bank of America to cut off the window company and its workers, noting that the bank has received a bailout itself (through tax payer-funded cash infusions earlier this fall.)
