By Elinor Langer

Genghis Khan's position was, in fact, far more defensible than ours [Americans], as an expander. He was in favor of expansion because, as he openly avowed, he liked the fun of expanding. He enjoyed killing people who resisted annexation and piling their heads up in pyramidal form. He indulged in no hypocritical pretences about their wanting to be annexed, or about the good annexation would do them.--The Nation, January 27, 1898
