Masthead watchers will note that with this issue I have dropped the editorial director half of my title. This change is recognition of a happy reality. For the past ten years Katrina vanden Heuvel, who started as a Nation intern in 1979, has sat in the editor's chair and more than filled the editor's shoes. She is, as she has been and will continue to be, the Nation's editor. She is her own editorial director. Former Nation editor Carey McWilliams once said that the editor of The Nation is captive of The Nation's tradition. I am pleased to say that Katrina has already done much to shape that tradition.
