We gave up our SUV years ago for a smaller, more fuel-efficient car that is perfect for our family. With two young children and car seats it is just enough room. If I did not have to drop my children off at the daycare I would definitely bike or utilize the transit system, but with our time constraints we need to drive. I frequently see people walking or biking to work and I applaud them.
So, I am considering forming a carpool network in my community along the lines of the group Freecycle. I may only have one extra seat, but it is an extra seat. If we can get together as a community and commute and carpool together, imagine not only the savings to our pocketbooks, but also the decrease in carbon emissions. Soon, maybe we will all be carpooling in hybrids!
