Reader Tip: Making Shade
Plant trees! Deciduous trees planted around the southern and western exposures of your home cut the amount of sunlight hitting a house. In the summer, the shade reduces the need to use an air conditioner, while in the winter (when its leaves have fallen) they allow plenty of exposure from the sun, which can cut heating costs. Evergreens both cut down the amount of heat received in summer and cold in winter.
Not to mention that trees are terrific air filters.
