Reader Tip: Water Recycling
Save water! It's the stuff of all life. Put a catch basin--a gallon jug, plastic pail, whatever--under all your faucets and the shower. Catch water while waiting for the hot tap's water to become the right temperature. Use this clean rescued water to fill pet dishes, water indoor plants, fill the washing machine, even flush the toilet. Better yet, if you use green detergents and soaps and catch the water while you are actually showering or washing your hands, you can use this "gray" water to flush the toilet. Use a water conservation kit (often available through City Hall Public Works) to decrease the water it takes to flush.
To catch rain water, use a downspout rain barrel, but be sure to screen or mesh the openings to control mosquito larvae. Wash your car on the lawn or other permeable surface using green cleansers.
Saving water is right for the environment, easy to do, and will save you money "when," not "if," water usage is metered throughout the country.
