Christian Environmentalism
How would Jesus restructure a business? Ernest Bader, a British plastics company owner, asked himself that very question in 1951.
Bader envisioned applying Christian principles of fellowship, social responsibility, and charity to his firm, while remaining profitable and serving as an acceptable model to other companies. The result was the Scott Bader Commonwealth, an employee-owned entity, forced to live within certain limits, to reroute 5 percent of its profits to charities, and to never sell to customers involved in war-related industries.
Today, Bader's Commonwealth is called the Scott Bader Company. Even in this age of corporate scandals and Chapter 11 pension dismemberment, Ernest Bader's company, and its ethical business model, has spread across Europe, to the Middle East, and to the United States. Each of its units remains limited in size, fully employee-owned, and continues to follow the sense of social responsibility outlined by Ernest Bader, while still making money.
