The Ten Minute Activist
Easy Ways to Take Back the Planet
The Ocean on the Ropes
It's the match of the century! In one corner, weighing in at a colossal gazillion tons: the ocean! And in the other corner, standing billions of dollars strong: human industry!
Who will win? Nobody can tell. But it's the twelfth round and the ocean is looking pretty frazzled. But as Rocky Balboa or Muhammad Ali could tell you, the underdog in the ring always has a twelfth-round comeback. In the ocean's case, that last-minute defense might lead to a total knockout of human civilization. The collapse of the ocean ecosystem has been measurable since 2000 and continues at 3 percent a year. At the same time, heavy metals have made some species dangerous to eat. Considering that one out of six people on Earth get their protein from fish, that could be one big thud against the mat, very soon.
We must learn to fish and consume responsibly, cutting out endangered and poisoned species. Check out the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch website for updated info on what is and is not okay to eat in your area. If you fish, check out the FDA's local fish advisories.
