Easy Ways to Take Back the Planet
Reader Tip: Starting Your Own Bag Collection
Collect recycling bags which are often given away free, and take them with you every time you go out to shop. You can store a variety in your car or bike: cloth or string; big or small; white, black, green, or blue. For produce one can get organic see-through small white cotton bags on the Internet. I store all the small bags within the largest one.
String bags are good for carrying small packages and vegetables. For grocery shopping for a family of four I use eight bags. I use then when I buy clothes, hardware, drugs--everything. They're also useful for carrying packages up from the garage two stories to my apartment. I put a very small one in my pocket when I'm going for a walk. I used to use valuable drawer space to store plastic and paper bags, but no more, so that space is freed up. After a while of doing this, I realize that non-reusable paper or plastic bags breakable, breaking at all the wrong moments, so they are a hassle to use. My reusable bags are much more convenient and have become a habit.
