Reader Tip: How to Start a Progressive Debate
In addition to personal green behaviors, the best way to convince others to go green is to reframe the discussion. Rather than trying to persuade friends and colleagues of the need for more environmentally sound practices, we ought to treat this need as common sense, not up for discussion, and instead only debate what constitutes best practice. So long as the foundational belief remains "only an opinion," we will always be playing catch up. Thus, rather than bringing up the need to clean up our act to counter the effects of global climate change, etc., we should instead talk about how we might balance a local-food movement with the also laudatory efforts of Fair Trade--moving the discussion into a productive, progressive debate.
