How to Buy More for Less
Bulking up at the grocery store is all about lightening up... on packaging, that is. Bulk food is gaining traction--even major supermarket chains have begun installing bulk item bins. Whether you're a chocolate-covered-raisin connoisseur or a bulk-black-bean binger, you get to buy the amount you want, at lower cost, and without all the packaging. (Packaging accounts for half of all paper produced in North America, 90 percent of all glass, and 11 percent of all aluminum. And, all told, almost a third of the waste generated in the United States is packaging.)
It's likely there's a bulk food store near your house. But if not, don't be shy about letting your local store know that you desire a bulk food selection. Give them the market rationale: you want to save money and intend to shop where bulk food is available. And remind them that wholesale bulk foods cost stores less as well.
