The Ten Minute Activist
Easy Ways to Take Back the Planet
Librarians to the Rescue
Often misrepresented as hush-happy fuddy-duddies, librarians are actually outspoken, cutting-edge, social activists dedicated to preserving freedom of speech, privacy rights, and digital rights. They have been in the forefront of the debate over the USA Patriot Act, the fight against government secrecy, and finding a balance between copyright protection and consumers' fair use rights.
Today's libraries have more than just dusty books on improving your checkers game on their shelves. Many libraries have extensive music and movie collections available for you to take home and enjoy. Some libraries also double as community meeting spaces, lecture halls, cinemas, and art galleries. And some are works of art in themselves. San Jose's King Library, for example, incorporates 33 artworks by artist Mel Chin into its building, including rolling tables that fit together like jigsaw pieces and glass vaults of "banned" books hidden under certain book stacks.
