Dirty Trickster Steele Is New RNC Chair

posted by John Nichols on 01/30/2009 @ 4:50pm

When Michael Steele ran for Maryland's open US Senate in 2006, his backers hired 300 mostly poor African Americans from Philadelphia -- most if not all of them unemployed, many of them homeless -- fed them donuts and then packed the crew onto Trailways buses for an Election Day trip that would make a bit of political history.

The buses, which were draped in banners for Steele and then-Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich, headed across the state line into Maryland, where the day laborers were dispatched to predominantly African-American neighborhoods of the city of Baltimore and populous Prince George's County.

They spent Election Day handing out glossy fliers headlined "Democratic Sample Ballot" or "Official Voter Guide." The fliers employed the phrase "Ehrlich-Steele Democrats." And they featured images of prominent African Americans, such as former Democratic congressman and NAACP leader Kweisi Mfume, above the words: "These are our choices."

The implication that Mfume and other popular Democrats in the state were backing Steele, and Ehrlich, was hard to miss.

But Mfume wasn't backing the "Ehrlich-Steele Democrats" ticket.

Steele and Ehrlich weren't running as Democrats.

Both men were Republicans. And, despite what the group Progressive Maryland described as a campaign of "Lies, Dirty Tricks, and Fraudulent Fliers Designed to Deceive African American Voters," they both lost.

Now, however, one of them, Steele, is the new chairman of the Republican National Committee.

The former lieutenant governor of Maryland, who has long been a favorite Republican commentator on Fox News and other conservative programs, won the backing of committee members who gathered in Washington Friday after promising to renew the sagging Grand Old Party.

Steele, an arguably able political player who has for many years been one of the GOP's highest-profile African-American leaders, pitched himself for the chairmanship by suggesting that he could put a positive face on a party that has seemed in recent years to be more interested in circling the conservative wagons than in attracting new voters.

Steele promises to engage in "outreach."

But what will the outreach look like?

What sort of politics will Steele practice as RNC chair?

If past is prologue, this 2006 article from the Washington Post may prove instructive.

As Post writers Matthew Mosk and Avis Thomas-Lester noted: "Republican leaders have defended the Election Day episode as an accepted element of bare-knuckle politics. But for many voters, it shattered in one day the nice-guy images Ehrlich and Steele had cultivated for years."

Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley was blunter: "I think it's pretty low that Ehrlich and Steele would print up a fake ballot and bus in unemployed people and exploit them. It doesn't get much lower than that."

I don't know anything about Steele. Do you have any evidence that he did not do what Nichols and the linked Washington Post alleges?

If he didn't do it and Nichols is falsely accusing him, then we might have to search for some plausible rationale - such as racism.

However, I don't think a white person engaging in these tactics, from any party, would get a free pass. So, why does it automatically come down to racism when a black person is involved?

I, for one, welcome the fact that the GOP has gotten to the point where a black person is leading the RNC. But, if these allegations are true, then the fact that he is leading the GOP suggests the party might be lacking a little in the moral fiber department.

Not a big surprise given the festishing of people like Lee Atwater and Karl Rove - and the anything goes so long as we win attitude toward electoral politics. But, it certainly is something that merits discussion - rather than weak attempts to silence people by playing the race card.

I wonder how Confederate Republicans will respond to Steele leading the GOP. I'm thinking they might migrate over to the Constitution or perhaps Libertarian parties. But then again, maybe not.

It should be an interesting reaction to observe regardless, and I hope the party as a whole puts that bit of nonsense behind them.

  10. The biggest fear the libs and dems have is that once the black community as a whole finally figure out what the Asian, Indian, many Hispanic, and others have figured out in 1 generation here... the wonders of free enterprise + drive + the freedom to fail = the fact that anyone can benefit from the combination and be in charge of ones life on all levels, especially economic.

That is freedom....not govt dependancy and victimhood.

...then they will also find out the fraud of the dem party and keeping them down on the lib plantation(portrayed as victims forever without a chance unless the Dem Party is involved) with endless promises for their loyalty votes...and the same old woes at pre-election time...

in short...once the black community discovers that they are beter off on their own..the dems are finished...

and any black conservative threatens the status quo and must be destroyed.

Well, the only problem with that John is that every bit of it...

Blacks are andf will continue to be, overwhelmingly Democrats.

"The second-largest heavily immigrant ethnic group, after Hispanics, are Asian-Americans. Immigration enthusiasts often claim they are "natural Republicans" because they are thought to be prosperous, law-abiding, family-oriented etc. etc.

The only problem with this theory: these natural Republicans have been voting Democratic.

The results of a massive multilingual Presidential election exit poll conducted last November in eight languages of almost 11,000 Asian voters, 82 percent of them immigrants, have finally been released by the liberal Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund.

The findings are exceptionally bad for the GOP.

Among these Asian voters, Kerry drubbed Bush 74-24."

Carmen Wong, 21, is a Chinese-American senior at the University of Southern California. Her parents are Republicans and she used to be one, too, but she recently switched her voter registration to independent.

Although Wong is fiscally conservative, she is socially liberal and has turned against the Iraq war.

Wong epitomizes a recent trend among young Asian-Americans: their widespread abandonment of the Republican Party.

The Institute of Politics at Harvard University recently released data from an online survey of 2,525 18- to 24-year-olds. Among the survey's more notable statistics are those concerning party affiliation among Asian-Americans: 47 percent identify themselves as Democratic, 15 percent Republican and 39 percent independent -- making them more Democratic than any other ethnic group except African-Americans in the survey.

Betsy Kim, 44, a Korean-American who is executive director of the American Majority Partnership, the Democratic National Committee's constituency outreach program, sees a clear generational shift toward Democrats among Asian-Americans.

Young Asian-Americans are significantly more Democratic than young whites, who are roughly evenly split between the two major parties. And Asian-Americans of all ages have been trending Democratic for years.

But they were once a dependable Republican constituency. According to data from the Asian-American Legal Defense and Education Fund, former President George H.W. Bush got 24 percent more of the Asian-American vote than did Bill Clinton in 1992.

Chin points to the 1990s as a turning point. Asian-Americans became more Democratic in that decade and Al Gore carried the Asian-American vote in 2000.

  18. Two women walk out of John McCain's Mid-West headquarters carrying a pile of voter canvassing sheets, one sports a baseball hat declaring her a "team leader" of the Republican campaign. And both are black -- an unusual sight in an election where Barack Obama's support among African Americans is almost monolithic.

Are they volunteers? They look at each other sheepishly. "Not exactly," replies one. "We work for an employment agency," says the other. Who are they voting for? "I don't want to say," says the first woman. "Obama -- of course!" whispers the braver of the pair.

They laugh, then look over their shoulders at the office behind them. "Don't give him your name, he'll put it in the paper," says the cautious one, explaining that they cannot afford to lose their $10-an-hour jobs. "This is embarrassing. We're doing this because we have to live. At least none of our friends can see us. We're from Chicago -- like Obama."

  34. Obama won the Democratic nomination for President in a hard contest. Nobody gave him preferential treatment. Up until the last, he had a hard stand against Hillary. He won the Democratic Party's political establishment with his actions.

On the contrary, the election of Mr. Steele as GOP Chairman was - as always is in the GOP- a calculated marketing action oriented to make believe that the party is inclusive and universal. There were at least 2 dozen GOP leaders that might have filled that position before Steele. To cite just a few: Palin, Jebb Bush, Schwarzenegger, Giuliani, Huckabee, etc.etc

The GOP has won much more elections than the DEMS in the last 30 years just because of marketing. Here we have another jewel. Will it be successful? You bet it will, just by showing this guy defending "family values" every now and then they will climb some maybe 5% in the African American community??

I remember an episode of Mr. Cheney when a journalist ask for an interview: "what is the race of the journalist, is he black?", he said...Or Mr. Bush looking from the air the poor African Americans from New Orleans, clearly afraid to come down.... The GOP is WASP in their very heart.

They Charge Republicans with being greedy when Dems are the biggest bunch of tax cheats out there. First Rangle, then Franken, then Spitzer, then Geitner, and now Dascle:

Which one? Do you mean the new one or the old one?

In school I was taught that racism is when a person harbors predjucidial attitudes or judgements regarding race.

When I got into corporate America, I was told that racism is when groups of people benefit from racial privledges associated with belonging to a racial group.

The first identifies suspect actions based upon the rationale for those actions.

The second condemns all white people as racists and lionizes all black people as victims.

Taken further, the second definition says individual traits and character don't matter: the only thing that matters is which group you belong to.

Didn't somebody say something about the content of their character and not the color of there skin? Well this person obviously knew nothing about racism.

  42. Anyway, I just stopped by to drop off some interesting reading. You'd do well to heed this advise/warning:

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123336391229335459.html

Bush Hatred and Obama Euphoria Are Two Sides of the Same Coin

At first glance, Bush hatred and Obama euphoria could not be more different. Hatred of Mr. Bush went well beyond the partisan broadsides typical of democratic politics. For years it disfigured its victims with open, indeed proud, loathing for the very manner in which Mr. Bush walked and talked. It compelled them to denounce the president and his policies as not merely foolish or wrong or contrary to the national interest, but as anathema to everything that made America great.

In contrast, the euphoria surrounding Mr. Obama's run for president conferred upon the candidate immunity from criticism despite his newness to national politics and lack of executive experience, and regardless of how empty his calls for change. At the same time, it inspired those in its grips, repeatedly bringing them tears of joy throughout the long election season...

In fact, Bush hatred and Obama euphoria -- which tend to reveal more about those who feel them than the men at which they are directed -- are opposite sides of the same coin. Both represent the triumph of passion over reason. Both are intolerant of dissent. Those wallowing in Bush hatred and those reveling in Obama euphoria frequently regard those who do not share their passion as contemptible and beyond the reach of civilized discussion. Bush hatred and Obama euphoria typically coexist in the same soul. And it is disproportionately members of the intellectual and political class in whose souls they flourish.

Both definitions need work, though the former is closer. If it's expanded from a person to a person, group, or institution, it would be about right. Though even then the definition should also include carrying out actions, policies and practices that can reasonably be expected to advantage or disadvantage certain racial groups, whether or not that is an explicit part of their rationale.

Your second definition is curious. It certainly refers to one result of society's racism, and it is something that members of any privileged group should be aware of and work to remedy, but it is not itself a useful definition of racism.

  46. Rightwingers are racist to the core. Racism is one of the pillars of their disgusting CroMag subhuman take on the world as they try to drag liberal excellence down to their level of abysmal failure. If they did not have "outgroups" to blame for their deep-seated failings, they would invent a group that they felt they could get away with harrassing (say, the blue-eyed minority to be their designated antagonists).

From JOMAMMA's grotesque outburst about "breeding" the other day (greeted with hardy approval by fellow travelling CroMag DARIN) to years of garbage from BARRY25, the racially obsessed rightwinger exhibits what he (or she) is -- the later, huffy and pious denials like those of LUVVIE notwithstanding.

Tell us, CroMags, when has ONE of you ever breathed a critical word toward the fecal matter like this that is in fact your staple brain food:

"McCain is done, which shouldn't be news to anyone!!! There is really only ONE reason McCain has failed sooooo badly, and it's not the "immigration" issue! It's the "ILLEGAL immigration" issue, and MCCain was, and still is, on the wrong side of this issue!!!! Even if we do defeat Radical Islam, people like Mccain will try to hand this country over to Mexico. Just go to LA or any central valley town in Ca. and you'll feel as if you're in a third world country! Actually, i don't think hispanics are a minority group anymore in Ca. And you call someone else an idiot? Buwhahahaa snicker.

    ----

Are we taking lessons from corporate America again? cool. They are never wrong either, like liberal elites. We can learn valuable moral lessons from corporate structures, and morals are what we should be concerned with, according to REv LUVSLIBERTY. Corporate morals instruct as that the living conditions of people in Burma do not matter, as long as dividends are paid out. They teach us that if it is cheaper to pay off a poor mother for the death of a son than to buy safety equipment, then pay off mom.

They also can teach us the value of job creation, hard work, how to remove (some but not all or even most) bureaucracy , so I should not focus on just the bad. But, to use corporate America as a place to learn the definition of racism?

Maybe it is just another attempt to change the subject from the GOP's choice of a guy that wanted to run as a demoNcrat, and as blatant an affirmative action PR ploy as choosing Sarah Palin.

Students Bitten in Second Day of Demonstrations Against Segregation 250 Marchers Seized Robert Kennedy Fears Rise in Turmoil Dr. King Says Protests Will Be Pressed

By FOSTER HAILEY Special to The New York Times

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., May 3 -- Fire hoses and police dogs were used here today to disperse Negro students protesting racial segregation.

Three students were reported to have been bitten and to have required hospital treatment. Two firemen and a news photographer were injured by bricks and broken bottles thrown from the top of a Negro office building near the major encounter, at 17th Street and Fifth Avenue North.

[In Washington, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy warned that ``increasing turmoil'' would be made inevitable by a refusal to grant equal rights to Negroes, United Press International reported. But he questioned the timing of the demonstrations.]

    Marchers Are Dispersed

This was the second day of major demonstrations by the students here. Yesterday, more than 900 students were sent out from the Negro section in groups of 10 to 50. Some succeeded in reaching City Hall and several downtown corners. More than 700 were arrested.

Today, with the dogs and fire hoses, the police were largely successful in dispersing the student marchers before they left the Negro section. Fewer than 500 were able to leave the 16th Street Baptist Church before the police sealed its doors. Only two groups won their way through the police lines.

One group of 20 reached City Hall, where they were arrested. Another group of 10 got as far as the bus depot on 19th Street, where they also were taken into custody. In all, more than 250 persons were reported arrested today. ]

Maybe to a Sara Palin or someone as dumb as her could triangulate that logic somehow but it would require a total lack of awareness totally immersed in the uneducated mind of an evangelical whackdoodle. Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice are horrific liars as well. Saying so and speaking the truth is hardly racist since the 3 black Republicans are lying sacks of crap and does not mean the whole race is broken in terms of any redeeming values. Living here so close to Rush Limbaugh's West Palm Beach Florida mansion I can see why so many northern and Midwestern right thinking conservatives would listen to and idolize a 300 pound overweight lard ass oxy-contin addicted junkie that sends his illegal immigrant housecleaners into the street with cash to buy him more drugs. Why in the world wouldn't a black Rhoades Scholar like Obama listen to him and the Republican experts like Phil ‘Americans are just whiners' Gramm or say Carly Fiorina that drove HP Computers into the ditch but kept $40 million for herself and drove us into this depression? John McCain had them on his bus along with Sara Palin to boot before the wheels came off. She even had the blessings of her own personal black witch hunter from Kiambu, Kenya named Thomas Muthee at the Wasilla Assembly of God church. How could America miss such a opportunity for such leadership? Poor OLD McCain had to suspend his campaign on the first day of his convention to fly back to Washington to rescue the failed economy that he had declared fundamentally sound hours

Of course not. But I've seen so many transparently disingenous accusations of racisim hurled against Republican that it was fun to turn the tables on Nichols. Sauce of the goose and all that.

Probably the most fascinating thing about this for me is political supporter double standards.

I've written before that Dems can get caught cheating on their taxes or cheating on their wives and their supporters couldn't care less. But if they were to be caught smoking in public it'd be the end of their political career.

Repubs can be photographed clubbing baby seals, but get caught trying to score a blob job in a Minneapolis airport bathroom and you're toast.

    Anyhoo...

I'm sure you all think Steele is a monster for this. I think it's kind of funny. Where you see someone preying on society's most vulnerable members, I say, if you're dumb enough to vote for the wrong party because he's got the right skin color, you are too dumb to vote in the first place.

Which is no differnt from Florida 2000. Gore's lawyers were getting millitary ballots thrown out on specious technicalities. I was enraged that the people who were putting their lives on the line to defend this country were being disenfranchised.

All those "Zzzzzz"s that JOMAMMA puts on screen are there for a reason. It means that JOMAMMA has spent several decades mentally asleep, although his body still lumbers around and comissions acts while on automatic pilot (acts like breeding, consuing calories, shitting, sprouting manboobs).

JOMAMMA defines what it means to be pathetic and sad for having no idea about what is going in the world around his meaty skull. But I suspect that is the very reason why JOMAMMA devotes so much time to literally mindless babble and verbal gurglings. 60. Oreo cookie incident After a September 26, 2002 gubernatorial debate, which had occurred without reported incident, Paul Schurick, Ehrlich's communications manager, claimed that the Townsend campaign handed out Oreo cookies to the audience.[8] Five days after the debate, Steele said that one or more Oreo cookies had rolled to his feet during the debate suggesting a racist statement against him, that of being black on the outside and white on the inside like an Oreo. "Maybe it was just someone having their snack, but it was there," Steele said. "If it happened, shame on them if they are that immature and that threatened by me." At the time of the debate, Schurick had not mentioned any such incident, but in November 2005 he claimed "It was raining Oreos... They were thick in the air like locusts. I was there. It was very real. It wasn't subtle."[9] In a November 2005 Hannity and Colmes appearance, Steele agreed with Hannity that cookies were thrown at him.[10] Neil Duke of the Baltimore NAACP, who moderated the debate, praised the "passionate audience" and noted their "derisive behavior"[8] but did not see such behavior. "Were there some goofballs sitting in [the] right-hand corner section tossing cookies amongst themselves and acting like sophomores, as the legend has it?" Duke said. "I have no reason to doubt those sources; I just didn't see it."[9][11][12] The operations manager of the building where the debate was held, interviewed three years after the event by The Baltimore Sun, disputed Steele's claim and said "I was in on the cleanup, and we found no cookies or anything else abnormal. There were no Oreo cookies thrown."[9] Some eyewitnesses including AP reporter Tom Stuckey who was at the event have said cookies were handed out.[13]

Alan "Jesus would not vote for that man!" Keyes is a born loser*. He does not even live in Illinois, was parachutted in from Maryland after losing miserably in any contest he had ever attempted. Unable to find anyone to run against Obama after "Moral Jack" Ryan's public sex implosion, the Repugnants turned it over to Keyes with shambolic results. Keyes even bit the Repugnant hand that tried to feed him, had undignified public catfights with his lesbian daughter. A big loss in a state that only recently was solid red despoite Chi-Town. [*Actual quote during televised debate with Obama]

Back to the main event. It is sickening to watch disgusting rightwing pukes for whom discrimination is the base of their ideology whine and moan like femmes when it is made clear that normal people are not going to give them slack. The sicko right intones a few solemn pieties between election cycles, then returns to gutter politics when they think votes are at hand.

Southern Democrats like Strom "Secret Whoppee with the Housekeeper" Thurmond quit the party en masse in the mid-1960s when the civil rights movement's goals were achieving de jure recognition. They turned their backs on the campaigns for equality, period. Closer to the present, the maggot Rove engineered gay rights issues on numerous ballots in the 2004 general election to pander to and mobilize the illiterate RIO/WARRENJEFFS/COMMANCHE vote. Sick, sick, sick. And then these pukes have the gall to whine and boo-hoo and get all femmy about (sniff sniff) being called bigots when bigotry IS the foundation of their disgusting ways. Have not been so contemptous of rightwing garbage since Thursday when M.Duncan whined that Dems would re-district to gain seats (see: DeLay-Texas-'05).

Pittsburgh police said that Ashley Todd, a white college student from Texas, is being charged with making a false report to police after she alleged that she was mutilated by a supporter of Barack Obama.

The 20-year-old initially told police that she was attacked on Wednesday night in Pittsburgh as she attempted to use a cash machine. She claimed that her assailant, a tall black male, grabbed her from behind, put a knife to her throat and forced her to hand over $60..." (LONDON TIMES ONLINE, 25 Oct 2008)

NY TIMES: "Princeton Student Admits Faking Attack" By WINNIE HU Published: 12-18-2007: "A Princeton University junior who claimed to have been beaten by two men in black ski caps for his conservative views admitted on Monday that he made up the attack, according to Princeton Township police officials.

Francisco Nava, 23, told police that he was attacked on Friday evening, two days after he and three other students belonging to a conservative group, the Anscombe Society, had received threatening e-mail messages, according to the university. The society opposes premarital sex and advocates for a return to more traditional morality in society. A politics professor who serves as an unofficial adviser to the group, Robert P. George, also received e-mail threats.

Mr. Nava initially told police that one of the men approached him a few miles away from campus and asked him to go with him to help someone who was hurt. Mr. Nava said that when he walked toward the man, he was grabbed by a second man and pinned against a brick wall in a field. He said that both men hit him in the face before running away.

But on Monday, when confronted by police officials about inconsistencies in his story, Mr. Nava admitted that he had inflicted scratches and bruises on his own face because of "underlying personal issues" and that he had not received any threatening e-mail messages, said Detective Sgt. Ernie Silagyi, who interviewed Mr. Nava."

When judging racism, the question is to see if the standard varies across races. The fact that being Republican is the key variable, we should conclude perhaps that its not racism but dislike of Republicans.

I must admit that every time I hear someone claim to be conservative or "Republican" I wait to see if they play rhetorical tricks or make asshat comments like Rush. Unfortunately, my expectations are met more often than not. Democrats, thankfully, don't have someone like Rush to emulate - so they are less of a problem.

  70. Among white independents, racial stereotyping is not uncommon. For example, while about 20 percent of independent voters called blacks "intelligent" or "smart," more than one third latched on the adjective "complaining" and 24 percent said blacks were "violent."

Nearly four in 10 white independents agreed that blacks would be better off if they "try harder."

Now, a black man made it all the way to the White House and the Republicans think they can just 'pick a black guy' and they'll succeed the same way.

What is your take on this? Do you want to see the adminsitration fail, like George W Losr's did, out of hate and spite?

    3. Who do you see as the future of a Repugnant party that is composed of people held hostage & homeskolled by semi-sober yahoo parents like RIO-WARRENJEFFS: Ashley Todd? Francisco Nava? Perhaps the two self-hating, self-harming protoypes of rightwingers could form a national ticket once they reach 35 yo?

    4. What is it about empty symbolims that attracts people like you so much? For example, you go apeshit over seeing George W Loser enact busy work on a Ptomekin ranch or play dress up like a particularly dim child onboard the USS Lincoln. But you cannot comprehend people of substance, the Obamas, the Feingolds, the Sy Hershes, among others. What about excellence and accomplishment bothers you so?

The cookie story sounds like sheer bullshit, a judgment that is greatly advanced by the fact that to be a rightwinger is to be a LIAR and a racial provacteur when it suits their purposes......

Because the Repugnant party has long been steered by freaks, fanatics, crooks and liars, that is exactly what the Repugnant party attracts. Ashley Todd is Exhibit "A".

At first, we were talking about liberals. Then, you assert Republican is not the key variable in "black conservative Repub" because you prefer it be black. Then, you make it about MSM rather than liberals.

Let's just say the Led Zep song, "Communication Breakdown" comes to mind.

Are you saying Pelosi or Reid have the same level of influence as Rush? Interesting. Ever hear anyone hear quote either on any substantive policy point? How does that compare to the criticism they recieve here?

Now, contrast that with the comments of those that obviously follow Rush. I'd say there's a lot of difference there.

  85. As an independent, all I can say is, a pox on both their houses. No doubt, Obama is better than Bush, but that's no spectacular feat. First he appointed Clinton retreads, including "Bosnian sniper fire dodger" Hillary. Then he put foxes in charge of the hen house--the same economists who trashed the economy. Next he gave waivers to lobbyists after vowing to never include lobbyists in his administration. Worst of all is Dashle, a true sleaze (he's very popular in DC, so that should be a clue). After promising respect for the Muslim world, he promptly killed Muslim civilians (kids, too) with a blind drone. Hear that? That's Muslim goodwill flushing down the toilet. Now he wants to surge in Afghanistan. If he's such a smart dude, there must be something toxic in the capital air.

Where is your vein-popping outrage now? Why no indignant finger-pointing and heated lecture from the pulpit to CRAPPY for another in his serialized racialist comments?

  87. >>>Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley was blunter: "I think it's pretty low that Ehrlich and Steele would print up a fake ballot and bus in unemployed people and exploit them. It doesn't get much lower than that."<<<

Steele will be just one of many Republicans trying to put a new face on failed policies that only benefit the rich. At some point (probably long after Steele) the Republicans will have to get real and become relevant again to middle and working class Americans.

The lottery mentality trick the Republicans have been using for decades - that maybe you will become rich someday and benefit from Republican policies - has worn thin on the American public, as most people realize that they will not become rich under Republican rule and are simply a pawn in a game of "keep away" that rich folks in this country keep playing on the rest of us.

My people are only wanted for their votes and nothing more. I have more black folks (who vote democrat) coming to my home, then you seen on your job. The Democratic party is not inclusive.

Case in point, the story behind the Jena 6 was going on for over year and the local black stations tried to draw attention to racial injustice going on but no white liberal newspaper, magazine or politician was interested.

They didn't come on board until after Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson held demonstration marches and demanded justice.

Did you even watch the Republican convention? My family gathered to watch, just as we gathered to watch the Democratic convention. And we were ALL struck by the fact that, at the Republican convention, the ONLY faces we saw that looked even remotely like us were on the people being paid to guard the white folks and their families being paraded on stage.

Why do you use that term "my people" isn't that a kind of a stereo type thing to say? Are we not beyond that stage yet that you still want to use that saying and here we are trying to come together as one nation and having Obama as our President should give everyone hope at least. In fact he is not even a black President, but of course we call him that but because he is half black and half white... he will have a better understanding of both races. You need to look forward now and not keep living in the past things have been done over the years that were not right, but I still don't know who you see as inclusive to all!!! We can't have any kind of change in this country if people will not move on and that goes for both races...living in the past is not healthy and certainly won't help this country come together.

  99. If Steele's election is a sign of the republican party's rebirth, then we can already pronounce it stillborn. It is sad to watch that party imnplode so astonishingly, so willfully, so thoroughly, and, most bizarre of all, clinging to dogmas that just dont walk much of anywhere anymore outside of the fox noise factory. So be it.

This is an opportunity for the rest of us who refuse to buy into the illusions peddaled by the Obama worshippers that all is now well with the nation. We can now without much distraction get into the wonderful opportunity-filled work of creating local independent electoral parties (we are naming ours after our town), whether organized formally or informally. (Peter Block's book "Community" is an excellent guide for this work.)

We can create local political power to forestall the return of anti-government, anti-politics, anti-Americanism reactionary politics in any form, shape, fashion, or dress, especially dressed as anything remotely akin to another born again republican party.

  100. Shameful reporting. This article is incredibly misleading.

Don't trust John Nichols - look at the flyer itself. The term "Ehrlich-Steele Democrats," means "Democrats for Ehrlich and Steele." This is exactly the same as referring to Democrats who supported Reagan as "Reagan Democrats." That term did not mean that Reagan was a Democrat.

Furthermore, the flyer specifically states that Democrats can vote for Republicans in the general election. Why would the flyer say this if its purpose was to trick people into thinking that Ehrlich and Steele are Democrats?

The flyer also has the pictures of Curry, Mfume, and Johnson and says "These are our choices." The author says that "Mfume wasn't backing the 'Ehrlich-Steele Democrats' ticket." It sounds like the author is parsing his words a bit. Nevertheless, if Mfume did not support these guys, then it was absolutely wrong to include his picture. Apparently, though, Johnson and Curry did support Ehrlich and Steele.

Also, Mr. Nichols, why is it wrong to hire homeless people and give them work distributing flyers?

I like what you are saying. Neither party has all the answers, and it's best that we become more active and become part of the process instead of just kick back and hope that a miracle of rebirth will occur for either party.

I also share your views on both Obama AND the Republicans. I don't think Obama is as far to the left as many liberals hope. That's alright with me. I just want him to do a better job than Bush, especially on the issue of uniting people.

Democrats seem to dwell on illusions while Republicans bask in confusion. Neither are completely right in their philosophies. ............ The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government. -- Patrick Henry
