When I interviewed George McGovern last summer about the Democratic presidential field last year, the liberal icon expressed the most enthusiasm about the candidacy of Illinois Senator Barack Obama.
But he said he was still talking to the candidates.
New York Senator Hillary Clinton talked with McGovern a lot, recalling her work in Texas for his 1972 presidential campaign and reassuring the former South Dakota senator that she really was determined to end the war in Iraq.
In October, he flew to Iowa and endorsed her candidacy, while saying nice things about Obama and several of the other contenders.
On Wednesday morning, after watching the candidates spin the results of the North Carolina and Indiana primaries, McGovern came to the conclusion that many savvy political observers have reached: Clinton is not going to be the 2008 Democratic presidential nominee.
"It certainly was not out of any less respect for Senator Clinton. I think she has waged a really courageous and valiant campaign. She will have my affection and admiration for all of my days," McGovern said. "But I think mathematically the race is all but won by Barack Obama..."
As someone who is familiar with the damage done to frontrunners by extended primary campaigns -- he was badly weakened by attacks from the campaign of former Vice President Hubert Humphrey before the California primary in June of 1972 -- McGovern took three steps.
First, he announced that he was switching his endorsement to Obama. That made him one of the most prominent Clinton backers to do so. (Georgia Congressman John Lewis, an early Clinton supporter, has made a somewhat similar switch, announcing that he will cast his super-delegate vote at the Democratic National Convention for the candidate who won his congressional district: Obama.)
Second, he called on Clinton to quit the race, saying, "The time has come for all of us to unite and get ready for the general election in the fall."
Third, he called Bill Clinton, a McGovern staffer from 1972 who appointed the South Dakota as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Agencies, and explained his decision.
"I have had many conversations with him over the years, none better than today," said McGovern. "He did me the honor of talking to me about this. There will be no hard feelings with him or Senator Clinton."
McGovern's a class act. He would have made the call no matter how difficult the circumstance. The fact that it turned out to be a "none-better-than" conversation suggests that perhaps even Bill Clinton is beginning to recognize the emerging realities of the 2008 contest.

The trickle might become a flood before the week is over, but I do not want to gloat or rest on a victory. What can be done to get some of those Hillary supporters that are either on the fence or are considering a vote for the GOP in the Fall? Let's not forget that she did get a huge amount of votes, damn near half the party.

She will NOT quit. They will have to call security to drag her from the convention floor in August.

By the way, the other reason HRC will not quit (something that has not been covered much here at The Nation, btw) is that there remain 300 uncommitted Supers, plus 157 Michigan and 211 Florida delegates that Clinton says she won fair and square. Even DNC strongman Howard Dean says that the Michigan and Florida delegations WILL be seated, because without MI & FL the Dem. nominee is DOA for November.
Bottom line? There are at least 666 undetermined convention votes still in play. This even before the horseswapping & seat changing that will certainly go on between June 3 and the Denver convention.
"You think this is over? No, this ain't over. This is far from over. This ain't over 'til I sez it's over. And I ain't come close to sayin' that."
Also, "Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night." Indeed.

mask has it right......she signed on to enable the war, voted repeatedly to trample on our Constitution and give Dubya the right to bug anyone, anywhere, anytime, allowed torture to continue at Guantanamo, refused to fillibuster Alito or Roberts, protected credit card companies at the expense of people struggling to stay afloat, etc etc etc
Good riddance to a bad Democrat and a worse American.

Hillary will be FORCED to face reality soon. She must win 65% of the vote in ALL of the remaining contests AND win 60% of the remaining undecided delegates just to catch Obama.
It ain't gonna happen, folks! It is a matter of time before the undecided superdelegates reach this same conclusion and move to Barack en mass.
Once Obama reaches the magic 2025 number with the superdelegates, if Hillary continues to fight, it will clear to EVERYBODY that she has completely lost touch with reality and is now playing the role of a destructive force in the Democratic party.
She can try to hide her destructive intentions by pretending to represent Florida and Michigan, but no one will be buying it but her.
If Hillary is to have ANY role in politics in the future, she needs to face reality and withdraw gracefully.

Hmm it's odd that you think it's possible to dislike Obama and not be racist. But if any of us dislike Hillary it's automatically sexism. Does that logic not strike you as hypocritical? Or maybe just a cultist way of thinking. You can dislike Hillary and not be sexist. I know it's amazing but some of us don't actually care about the color of the candidates skin or the content of their pants. We care about the person.

I believe even Machiavelli would advise Mrs. Clinton to try the "Graceful Exit" strategy.
Just ask John Edwards or Bill Richards. Sometimes there's more to be gained by stepping aside at the right time than charging forward against all odds.

Hillary being an accomplished woman, has nothing to do with how people feel about her. She is running as the 1st women pres but has used her husband to open doors for her. Show us that you did it without his help and maybe we would have felt differently. I am wht, over 50 and female. Everything I have accomplished I did by myself. My ex always supported me but I never used him to open any doors. I figured if I was going to make it I would do it by myself and I have..... What have they gained by stepping aside, exactly...neither of them had a chance in the first place, especially Edwards...a case could be made that they screwed up the tallys by wasting everyones time and more by running.

I've made the criticism of the all time biggest problem in this war being a lack of planning for a long time and it has not made any progress. This whole war was badly planned. There was no contingency plan if things didn't turn out the way we wanted. We didn't have enough on the ground troops. There was no plan on how to rebuild Iraq after Saddam fell. There was no plan on how to deal with the guerrilla fighters. We went into this with no other plan than "bring it on."
This war could have gone well if they weren't so gungho about jumping right into it. Maybe if they had waited until we stabilized Afghanistan so we could pull troops out of there to assist in Iraq it would be a better situation. Now Bush is looked down upon because no aspect of this war was well planned. It almost seems like his Cabinet got together said "hey we should take down Saddam" everyone said ok and that was the only forethought they gave it.

The current favorite:
Dear Hillary,
There was a time in my life when I needed you. You represented something so special to me. I was young, I instantly fell for you - you had short blonde hair and a heart-melting stare. Suffice to say the times have changed, I've found someone new - someone that makes me feel hopeful and important. This is it, Hillary, but I will never forget our special time together. Check this out!:
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0508/Obama_victory_call_Obamas_st rength_and_Limbaughs.html
In Indiana, 41% of Hillary's "Republican" voters said they would vote for McCain in November!
Since Hillary got 54% of the Republican vote, and Republicans constituted 10% of ALL primary voters in Indiana, Hillary got a 7% boost from the Operation Chaos and would have lost Indiana without this FALSE SUPPORT!
Posted by Metteyya at 05/07/2008 @ 6:20pm
My math was a little off in my last post, but th epoint is still the same. The FALSE SUPPORT of Hillary in Indiana attribuatable to Operation Chaos was 4.3%, which means she would have lost 53-47 in Indiana.
Here is the math:
Hillary received 644,590 votes, and Obama received 630,395 votes in Indiana. That is a difference of 14,195 votes.
If you add up both of their vote totals, you get 1,274,985 total votes cast, and we know 10% of these votes were Republicans. Hillary's share of the Republican vote was 54% or 68,849 votes. 41% of these Republicans that voted for Hillary indicated that they would vote for John McCain in November. That accounts for 28,228 voters, or 4.3% of all voters in the Indiana primary.
This is SOLID PROOF that Hillary did NOT win Indiana!

hsuB/cHeney are way way bigger liars than Billary and will they ever quit, of course not. So why should Billary do it? McCave hasn't reason to quit either as his lies get eaten up empty morsel by empty morsel.
Is that really the reason the electorate do not trust Barack? Is there really such a thing as an honest politician? How screwed up has it gotten that our weak kneed gov by the weak kneed people as obsessively repeated by our weak kneed MSM-- find lying politicians more acceptable and believable than those that won't.

Face it: No amount of funny math, wishful thinking, assertions that voters "don't trust" Barak or that he "can't beat McCain" will save HRC's candidacy. She'll bow out gracefully and soon. To do otherwise will tarnish her brand and damage her political career. Besides, the pressure to do so from party insiders will quickly becoame enormous and unbearable. Get used to saying "President Barak."

Hillary didn't win Indiana? Because why? Because lots of people with every right to vote wanted her to win more than they wanted Obama to win and voted that way?
The argument that we should only count democrats is not a good one for Obama. Before the Wright nonsense, Obama was doing really well attracting independents and liberal Republicans. If he wins Indiana by not counting non-democrats then he also probably loses Missouri and a couple of other open or semiopen states.
Mett as usual doesn't know when to turn off the spin machine. This is over. The only way for her to win the pledged delegate race is to win all but about 30 of the remaining delegates. And anyone who thinks that MI, FL and the supers are going to be determined by anything other than the pledged delegate vote is living in a fantasy world. That same fantasy world where the tax holiday is a good idea and we are winning the Iraq war.
I am no Obama supporter (though Clinton is significantly worse), but I simply cannot understand how people trick themselves into believing there is a significant chance he won't be the nominee. And given that he is going to be the nominee saying things like 'democrats who might vote for McCain shouldn't count in the primaries' is really quite stupid. When someone doesn't quite like you, and you want them to like you, insulting them and treating them as second class is silly.
Oh if the Nation could get around to making its commenting system better than what a 12th grader with an 'html for dummies' book could do that would be great. This is more of an embarrasment than your election coverage.

Well said. If you look at the former Soviet Union, many of the folks who did well after it fell were people who were doing well before it fell. My guess is the Limbaughs and Bushes and their ilk would have done just fine for themselves had the United States fallen instead of the Soviet Union.

This is only true if you do not get the point...Rush may be many things, but a fool r someone who never makes an intelligent point says more about you...he is one the best at articulating his point with sources and logic...listen to him somethime with your emotions dampered down and focus on the logic flow of his arguements...and learn to distinguish bewteen his use of absurdity to describe the absured...and his ability to cut to the chase of an arguement...you might find yourself respecting and even admioring his abilitys...
As far as not knowing what to do with hundres of millions of dollars...put it into working projects and investments there by creating jobs for others and grow it to more money to create yet more jobs ...or give it to the govt and watch it piss away, with nothing to show for it for you or your neighbors.....and when it was goone, it was gone and eand of the use..where if you make it grow it can be used over and over...

If so, he must have turned a deaf ear. Now he is telling Senator Clinton time to get out with the nomination not yet decided, even with Obama supposedly the "best candidate" smearing her in every way? Perhaps McGovern defecting to Obama, may be a sign to Obama and the democrats; With McGovern's blessing does this mean Obama may be defeated if the nominee by a landslide? Watch out who moves over to whom. If I were Senator Clinton, I'd be very happy to see McGovern move on over to Obama's side. Albatroses who needs them?

Only the Democratic Party would opt for suicide in the face of victory by further dragging out a bitter campaign. I guess we just can't stand the prosperity that might accrue from beating the Republicans and their 8 year debauchal.

Maybe McGovern should have followed his own advice..before election day.
I totally agree. He's just a loser. The same as BO will be against McCain

I have to believe that now Sen. Clinton is no longer out for the nomination but for other things: money to recoup personal losses (there is ample precedence for this), to personally craft Democratic party policy for the upcoming convention, and/or for some position which could keep her in the public gaze. If her goal is to leave Obama with no better than a Pyrrhic victory, his possibly subsequent loss in November would be shared by Clinton malice as well as Obama's perceived unelectability. Yet, is Bill Clinton willing commit to a hopeless assault that can seriously damage his and his family's stature? If Sen. Clinton pursues her campaigning, then truly Shakespeare was right about the inevitable tragedy of blind hubris.

WHOA - a larger input box. Its a start. Please pardon the needless attempt at HTML code: <a href=http://keelynet.com/energy/teslafe1.htm>Tesla</a>
<b>Bold</b> <br> <i>italic</i>
Ibble and Mask - with all due respect, the poorly documented inventions of Tesla included a few things that more than likely would have changed the world even more than he did. In fact the main reason he sold AC power to Westinghouse was that deemed it a transient thing - that his other ideas would supplant it.
(Which probably explains why the FBI followed him around in his later, crazier, days picking up the scrpas of paper and napkins he always left behind with diagrams and 1/2 finished thoughts. Or why when he died penniless and looney, they went in and boxed up the contents of his apartment and carted it all off, never to be seen again. Soon conspiracy ideas actually have a foot in fact it would seem.
A while back on "Mythbusters" they built a version of his harmonic resonator, rumored to have started an Earthquake in NYC. The rumor says when the police figured out the epicenter was Tesla's lab's neighborhood, they went in and he promptly destroyed the device. The "Mythbusters" thought it would be a goof .. they hooked it up to a bridge pier and within a minute they had to turn it off because the behemoth structure was actually moving.
(BTW: the URL atop takes you to a copy of some Tesla electric mystery car discussion and old newspaper transcripts.
