Impeach Cheney First?

posted by John Nichols on 04/18/2007 @ 12:26am

It is no secret that Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich has been toying with the idea of moving articles of impeachment against a member of the Bush administration. And he appears to be focusing more and more of his attention on the man that many activists around the country see as the ripest target for sanctioning: Vice President Dick Cheney.

Despite House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's efforts to convince Democrats to keep presidential accountability "off the table," Kucinich is just one of many House Democrats who have acknowledged in recent days that they are hearing the call for action loud and clear from their constituents and from grassroots activists across the country.

"I get one call after another saying, 'Impeach the president,'" says Congressman John Murtha, D-Pennsylvania. Congresswoman Diane Watson, D-California, says constituents in Los Angeles "are saying impeachment. I am hearing that more and more and more."

Kucinich, for his part, has sent more signals than anyone else in the caucus about his interest in raising accountability issues. The congressman, who has broken with Pelosi on issues relating to the funding of the war in Iraq, has been blunt about his frustration with the caution of Congress when it comes to addressing executive excess.

"This House cannot avoid its constitutionally authorized responsibility to restrain the abuse of Executive power," he told the House last month, adding that "impeachment may well be the only remedy which remains to stop a war of aggression against Iran."

Around the same time, in a letter to supporters of his anti-war bid for the 2OO8 Democratic presidential nomination, Kucinich asked it it was time to put impeachment on the table. The response was an overwhelming "yes."

Earlier this week, according to media reports Kucinich emailed House colleagues with a note that began, "I intend to introduce Articles of Impeachment with respect to the conduct of Vice President Cheney."

Kucinich put the plan on hold after the Virginia Tech shooting massacre. But the general expectation is that he will raise the issue anew after a decent interval.

Cheney's office sees no grounds for impeachment. "The vice president has had nearly 40 years of government service and has done so in an honorable fashion," says Megan McGinn, Cheney's deputy press secretary.

McGinn got that line out with a straight face.

Americans of who are not on the vice president's payroll are inclined to recognize Cheney's manipulation of intelligence prior to the Iraq War, his active role in going after administration critic Joe Wilson and Wilson's wife Valarie Plame, and his ongoing links to the Halliburton war-profiteering cartel as arguments against giving the vice president any prizes for "honorable" government service.

Impeachment activists have in recent months pushed an "Impeach Cheney First" message, in part to counter the complaint that impeaching Bush would put an even darker figure in charge. Of course, going after the most powerful vice president in history has consequences, as well. In the unlikely event that Cheney were removed from office, one line of reasoning goes, Bush would for the first time find himself in charge.

John Nichols' new book is THE GENIUS OF IMPEACHMENT: The Founders' Cure for Royalism. Rolling Stone's Tim Dickinson hails it as a "nervy, acerbic, passionately argued history-cum-polemic [that] combines a rich examination of the parliamentary roots and past use of the 'heroic medicine' that is impeachment with a call for Democratic leaders to 'reclaim and reuse the most vital tool handed to us by the founders for the defense of our most basic liberties.'"

only a little authoritarian would suggest that any discussion of impeachment is "pathetic," in light of the literally monumental level of falsehoods purported by our vice president. cheney has been so wrong, about so many things, and for so long, that he is a liability not to democrats (as only an authoritarian like maasch would suggest), but to the furthest right wing politicians in DC.

kucinich is actually only responding the the pervasive anger that most americans feel with respect to the war, with respect to civil liberties, corruption, etc, etc.

    maasch = pathetic, under-sexed, viagra-abusing, neo-con.

  3. 6 months, Mr Nichols....even if I wasn't going by HSUBFOOLS' prediction.

If bill of impeachment aren't out of the House by mid-late October, then it becomes a political impossibility.

Between Congressional Christmas holiday coming up and the 2008 election (those Senators won't want to spend their time stuck in the Senate while their opponents are on the campaign trail asking "Why is Senator Claghorn not working for the people of ***** and worrying about appeasing the Far Left Bloggers by going after a guy who's gone in 13 months?"

The Senate trial would HAVE to be over before X-mas and it WOULD have to be a Senate trial, because Cheney won't resign "out of embaressment" or demands from the Republicans.

But you know that...I hope. And that's why the end of Summer will be most interesting to see what you write on this in the future. If by Labor Day, you still think "Impeachment is still an option"...it means you're merely hawking your book and trying to keep the base fired up going into primary season.

    Otherwise, you're delusional.

  5. Going after Cheney is a fine idea; there is no 'Luke Skywalker' in the wings to turn him from the Dark Side, however.

The only hope that we have in getting to the next level is the probability that deep inside he is an utter coward and therefore likely to cut a deal rather than share a cell block with Scooter (poop-shooter).

If Cheney has any stones - doubtful though that may be - he will tie the Senate up with his trial and run out the clock so Chimpy's impeachment/trial/conviction will never happen.

I still say that a Constitutional amendment such that the runner up in the general election for president becomes the VP is the way to go. There would have been absolutely none of this shit (Iraq, warrantless spying on Americans, tax cuts for the top 1% to fund a war on Visa) if Gore (or anyone else) had been VP 2001-2005.

  11. Impeaching Cheney makes perfect sense, and if we had a real Democratic party and more real Democrats like Kucinich, then it would happen.

However, I'm not sure the real Democratic party that socked it to Nixon still exists. Having jettisoned their ideology during the Nineties, Democrats nowadays mostly do whatever they believe the US-American people want to do. From the years 2000 to 2006, Democrats believed that the electorate preferred Republicans and therefore largely became pale imitations of them. Now that they're popular again, they're trying to figure out what exactly it is that they stand for.

There are a few exceptions, of course. Russ Feingold is nearly as strong as Kucinich, and the late Paul Wellstone was, too. I've no complaints about Leahy and Waxman, and even Teddy Kennedy generally does the right thing. I'm willing to give Nancy Pelosi some time.

But basically, Democrats need to get their ideology back. Fighting plutocracy is what they are supposed to be about. Had they remembered this in 2000, they might not have lost so badly in that year and in 2002 and 2004.

  41. As usual you are quite wrong. I travel and have been to more than 30 countries. It is true that leftist media here and around the world paint that picture. However most average people around the world have a different view in my experience

try and defend this report, liberty (from world public opinion on-line):

Majorities in 13 out of 15 publics polled say the United States is "playing the role of world policeman more than it should be." This is the sentiment of about three-quarters or more of those polled in: France (89%), Australia (80%), China (77%), Russia (76%), Peru (76%), the Palestinian territories (74%) and South Korea (73%).

The US public is also among those most convinced that United States too often plays the role of world policeman. Seventy-six percent of Americans agree that their country is overdoing such activities.

In only one country does a majority disagree with the idea that the United States tends to take on the role of international enforcer more than it should: the Philippines. Fifty-seven percent of Filipinos reject the idea that the United States plays a police role too often, while only a third (31%) agrees that it does

as for this comment of yours:

Sure, promoting acceptance as normal practices: genocide (abortion), homosexuality, sex outside of marriage, drug use, high taxation (theft), and the ultimate definition of immorality-self defined morality versus submission to God and His standards

    1. how does the Left "promote" abortion, especially in light of our widespread encouragement of sex education, birth control and transparent, honest and reality-based dialogue?

good point. this reminds me of the story when Lafayette made a invitation tour of the US, to be feted as a great ally in the revolutionary war. problem was he gave speeches concerning just that individualism and most of all egalitarianism. this did not sit well with the Whigs, who surely wished they could disinvite him.

But while Obama mourns the slain students, he takes the massacre more as a theme than as a point of discussion.

So he moves quickly to the abstract: Violence, and the general place of violence in American life.

"There's also another kind of violence that we're going to have to think about. It's not necessarily the physical violence, but the violence that we perpetrate on each other in other ways," he said, and goes on to catalogue other forms of "violence."

There's the "verbal violence" of Imus.

  93. ARE YOU DETESTABLE LIBZ PROUD OF THIS SHIT????????

Less than 24 hours after the deadliest shooting spree in U.S. history, liberal Rep. Jim Moran took to the airwaves to launch a political attack against President Bush, congressional Republicans and the National Rifle Association.

Appearing on the "Jack Diamond Morning Show" on 107.3 FM in Northern Virginia, Moran suggested Republicans were to blame for Monday's tragedy at Virginia Tech, which left 33 dead and injured another 30. The anti-gun congressman said Republican policies made it easy for the shooter to obtain a gun.

When the show's host tried to suggest that the gunman may have been hellbent on killing regardless of the law, Moran turned the conversation back to the GOP, complaining that the United States needs a national registry to track all firearms purchases and more stringent gun-control laws. Moran then blamed Bush and Republicans in Congress for opposing such measures at the behest of the NRA.

When I called Moran's press secretary, Austin Durrer, this morning to get an explanation, I was told Durrer wasn't available. If you'd like to call, the office number is (202) 225-4376. I've also put in a request with the "Jack Diamond Morning Show" to get the audio of the conversation. (I was driving when the interview took place.)

Moran has a history of making politically charged comments that have landed him in hot water. In 2003, he said Jews were responsible for pushing the U.S. to war with Iraq. He later apologized, but not before an uproar in the Jewish community.

  134. Relax everyone, please. Three years ago when the Bushies were still riding high, all the "looneylefties" in this country were so smug and even funny at times. Now backed in a 29% approval rating corner- with mistake piled on mistakes- being quagmired in a "cake walk"- where liberators are greeted with IEDS- the MAASCH and LOONEY crowd seems so angry- childishly irrational. Come on guys, you still have the White House- basically the Senate, and in many polls you are winning the '08 race. Puff out your chests and celebrate your previous greatness. Remember you impeached a President for lying under oath about his sex life. (Proud of ya) Get over it, you bet on the wrong horse, we all make mistakes, sometimes they just can't run in the mud. Stop defending the current occupants- you're wasting everyone's time.

  135. If impeachment did happen, the world would receive a self satisfying high colonic. Instead of blind loyalty to a party or to the president in power, both parties: all members in Congress need to take back their lost power and regain the balance of powers. Lets not forsake the Nation and the world for money. Congress must show accountability, integrity and fortitude maybe forcing the same on the presidents good old boys. Impeachment is the only option. Well in a perfect world! Dream on Leefeller.

  136. Holy smokes! Look at all that emotion! Just like a repug to lash out like that at the first sign of change. That type of emotion only comes from one thing, and thats fear. So by calling anyone "wimpy" isnt going to help the repug office and the bullshit it has generated; nor your own dumbass ego. So as far as daring anybody to do anything, wont get anything solved. Personally, I just would like someone who has the position to do so, to fix this mess. How bout "daring" those guys to do their job?

  137. BRING IT ON LEFTISTS....I FUCKING DARE YOU TO....YOU DONT HAVE THE BALLS TO IMPEACH OUR PRESIDENT ANYMORE THAN YOU HAVE THE BALLS TO FIGHT TERRORISTS.....PATHETIC PUKES AND WEAKLINGS ALL OF YOU

  138. Posted by DAISENRYAKU 04/19/2007 @ 5:01pm | ignore this person

don't give this nutcase a platform by quoting him. most have him on ignore, and your quoting him will likely lead to your joining him on that list.

  139. Impeachment might be a good idea if it resulted in some kind of action. But Impeachment does not remove a president or vice-president from office. Conviction does. With the balance in the senate so close, there is absolutely no possibility of conviction. So why bother? As payback to the GOP for impeaching Clinton?

Of course, the latest idea by Mr. Nichols is to impeach _both_ Cheney and Bush at the same time. Yeah, that will fly. NOT. Democrats and leftists need to get over the 2000 election. That is what this all comes back to. "We wuz robbed!" Right. In a Florida that was called by the MSM for Gore before the polls closed in West Florida, resulting in thousands of Bush supporters giving up in disgust.

Really, if Bush was so wrong, you had your chance in 2004 and blew it. There is no way Bush is leaving office before January 2009, and no way US troops are leaving Iraq before 2009 either. Live with it. Your fantasies are going to be just that, forever. Fantasies.

  140. Impeach both now.

It is unwise to allow a mass murder to stop impeachment. That only promotes more occurring.

    Posted by Haggai101 at 04/20/2007 @ 6:48pm

  141. Wow, I can tell that this idea of impeachment really hits a nerve with all of you lunatic right-wingers. I wonder why? Is it because you hate to lose? Is it because you're holding on to an empty promise your beloved W made but has so far not delivered? You are so blind to facts and truth you deserve whatever comes to you. You make me sick...

This silly and pathetic excuse of Administration is going to hell faster than you can say "nucular". Then hopefully we'll start seeing the adults take charge.

I say enough is enough. Send the warmongers and fear-mongers away. I call for any self-respecting citizen, no matter the political affiliation, to contact his/her Representative and start putting pressure to remove these jokers from office. We owe it to future generations. ITMFA! ITMFA!
