Pelosi, Planes and Partisan Propaganda

posted by John Nichols on 02/09/2007 @ 11:50am

Republican apologists for the Bush administration's failed fight in Iraq and their amen corner in the media have been looking for something, anything, to distract the American public from a necessary discussion about the need to end the U.S. occupation of that country. They finally settled last week on the "scandal" involving House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's mode of transporation.

Pelosi, a California Democrat, was informed as she prepared to assume the speakership -- a position that places her third in the line of succession to the presidency -- that she could no longer travel as she previously had: on commercial airlines. She would, she was informed, have to fly as former Speaker Dennis Hastert had on a secure Air Force plane. So it was that, upon becoming speaker, Pelosi accepted her new circumstance and agreed to use a military plane with a fuel capacity that would allow for cross-country travel without stops.

That's not exactly the stuff of scandal. But, after an apparent "leak" from the Bush administration's Department of Defense to the White House-friendly Washington Times newspaper, the Times last week ran a story headlined: "Pelosi's Power Trip -- Non-stop Nancy Seeks Flight of Fancy."

Fox News jumped on the story, followed by other cable networks. The Republican National Committee stoked it with emails to reporters and briefing papers supposedly exposing Pelosi's imperial style -- and ambitions. The predictable Sean Hannity declared that Pelosi "thinks she's the president" -- seemingly unaware that by referencing the presidency he was acknowledging his own dear leader's regal pretensions.

Republican members of the House actually brought the issue up on the floor of a chamber that should have been focused on the question of how and when to end a war that began as Dick Cheney's "power trip" and George Bush's flight of fancy" but has since turned into an international disaster.

House Republican Conference chair Adam Putnam, of Florida accused Pelosi of displaying "an arrogance of office that just defies common sense."

House Minority Whip Roy Blunt, of Missouri, referred to the plane Pelosi would likely use as a "flying Lincoln Bedroom."

North Carolina Congressman Patrick T. McHenry, arguably the most consistently hysterical member of an increasingly hysterical caucus, described the speaker's plane as "Pelosi One," and declared that, "This is a bullet point to a larger value -- Pelosi's abuse of power continues.

McHenry accused the speaker of "exploiting America's armed forces and taxpayers for her own personal convenience."

Yikes! This was the Republican spin machine churning at full throttle.

There was only, er, one problem.

The charge that Pelosi was abusing her position was a complete fabrication.

The speaker did not request a bigger or better plane.

It was the man in charge of making security arrangements for members of the Congress who made the request.

House Sergeant at Arms Bill Livingood has confirmed that, for security reasons, he asked that Pelosi be provided with an Air Force plane that could make the trip from Washington to San Francisco without stopping to refuel.

"The fact that Speaker Pelosi lives in California compelled me to request an aircraft that is capable of making non-stop flights for security purposes, unless such an aircraft is unavailable," Livingood explained in a written statement. "I regret that an issue that is exclusively considered and decided in a security context has evolved into a political issue."

Livingood, who has served as sergeant at arms for 11 years, made similar arrangements for past speakers.

That was something the Republican National Committee and its media echo chamber could have discovered simply by contacting the Office of the Sergeant at Arms.

It is something that Republican Representatives Putnam, Blunt and McHenry should have known.

In fact, if this Congress had nothing else on its agenda, it might well be appropriate to inquire into whether Putnam, Blunt and McHenry used their positions to engage in a deliberate conspiracy to deceive the American people for partisan purposes.

But Congress has a higher calling. It is time to put aside the distractions and get focused on the discussion about war and peace that the administration and its acolytes on Capitol Hill are so determined to avoid.

John Nichols' new book is THE GENIUS OF IMPEACHMENT: The Founders' Cure for Royalism. Rolling Stone's Tim Dickinson hails it as a "nervy, acerbic, passionately argued history-cum-polemic [that] combines a rich examination of the parliamentary roots and past use of the 'heroic medicine' that is impeachment with a call for Democratic leaders to 'reclaim and reuse the most vital tool handed to us by the founders for the defense of our most basic liberties.'"

  1. Look, this is ridiculous....

what do the Repubs expect? That Pelosi is going to TAKE A TRAIN home to San Fran, in some simplistic idea of living by example and helping to reduce CO2 emissions by reducing her flying or something?

This is THE most powerful woman in America...and 2nd in line to the Presidency, she deserves the best. Limo, private jet, accomodations for her family, whatever she wants. And just because she's rich in her own right (or her husband's anyway) doesn't mean she should HAVE TO PAY FOR IT...she's the g**damn Speaker of the US House of Reps....she's entitled to it as one of our leaders.

Pelosi is doing important work for Americans....a little privelege isn't too much to ask for her!

After all, she's about to pass a non-binding resolution against the war, isn't she?

  2. Your cute little last sentence notwithstanding, Mask, the story here is that the obvious right-wing spin machine pumped up into full throttle within hours...

    lying all the while.

Dozens of apologies and retractions should be issued - fat chance.

  3. "alright guys...the dems are on the rise again, so lets did up some dirt!"

typical neocon (fascist) chicanery..."oh shit...they are figuring out how corrupt we are...lets accuse them of our sins and stir up a big fuss over nothing, but a big fuss is a big fuss and and to say it is to prove it in the minds of many!"

  4. Here's part of the story from Bloomberg-

"White House spokesman Tony Snow today defended Pelosi's use of a plane, and said the negotiations involve the Pentagon, not the White House.

``This is a silly story and I think it's been unfair to the speaker,'' Snow said.

That didn't dissuade House Republicans. Today, they halted debate on an energy-related bill for more than two hours to criticize the request for a larger plane than Hastert used for travel.

Representative John Shadegg, an Arizona Republican, said it was unfortunate House members must debate the ``excessive amount of money to accommodate one member Congress.'' Representative Dana Rohrabacher, a California Republican, said Pelosi's ``personal choices are extravagantly contradictory'' to her support for efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels to address the risks of global warming.

    Not Involved

Pelosi insisted this week that she is not involved in the talks, and the House Sergeant of Arms Wilson Livingood is handling the matter. She suggested today that her criticism of the war in Iraq is a factor in leaks from the Pentagon about the request that have suggested she is seeking more access to a government plane."

Hmmm...sounds like the White House is taking the same angle as John Nichols here...

while Pelosi is BLAMING THE MILITARY for the scandal?!?!?!?

  6. I can't help but remember Nanci Pelosi's oft-stated commitment to bipartisanship. Surely she understood that Republicans have never displayed the least bit of interest in bipartisanship, whether they were in the majority or not. The Republicans out of power are dirty, underhanded, lying, conniving partisans. For some reason the Democratic leadership feels the best way to respond to that is with quavering pleas for bipartisanship. Is the explanation that the Democratic leadership has the same ultimate objectives as the Republicans and doesn't think a family fight is in both their best interests?

  10. People,

This "issue" doesn't even deserve your most fleeting and trivial of thoughts. Pelosi's form of transportation is no different from hundreds of other politicos from both sides. Hell, doesn't Bloomberg have a jet equipped with rockets these days? Concentrating on such piffle is like throwing water into the sea. Madame Speaker wanted a bigger plane, not JUST for fuel capacity sakes, but for her family members to ride in as well.

The Air Force is not giving her the plane she wanted in terms of space, but in terms of fuel they will accomadate her.

  15. JR,

True, but with the sky full of witches on broomsticks and the airports steadily approaching confiscations of luggage and cavity searches with the incessant mischief no doubt taking bold and preposterous shape in the shady minds of the evildoers, there's really no way anyone can criticize measures taken in the name of "security". I mean, Bloomberg wants rockets, every now and then the White House lawn is bedizened with anti-aircraft missiles, judges carry guns in court, RFIDs in passports, fingerprints in airports, wiretaps, hair gel is forbidden on planes, ect. All these things are becoming commonplace and paving the way for even greater and more outlandish measures to give the illusion of security, when all along a simple bag of spinach or a bad burrito from Taco Bell ends up being more real and more lethal than any supposed plot by the shaitans...

It's also, in your depraved worldview, a crime for someone to resist the invasion of their country by America, isn't it? There isn't enough of a spark of intelligence in your brain to ever wonder if that invasion had any justification. Like I said before, you should be taking orders at the take-out window at McDonalds. Oh yes, the US taxpayer lavishes his pacific Israeli brethren with all kinds of goodies, many of which the former doesn't even have. And while its bad that Iranians give weapons to their brothers in Iraq, it's no problem that the Pakistanis gave technology to N. 25. The video that sparked the latest controversy shows a woman settler shoving against a metal cage attached around the front of a Palestinian family's home to protect it, cursing a Palestinian woman.

"Sharmouta" - Arabic for whore - the settler hisses over and over at Fida's frantic mother, standing just inches away behind the iron bars. The settler holds the second syllable in her vicious taunt: "Sharmouuuuta. Sharmouuuuta. You and all your daughters."

In a second video, young settler children hurl stones at Palestinian homes.

In both films, Israeli soldiers are seen hovering in the background but apparently do little to stop the settlers. Their inaction has triggered much of the public outcry.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert expressed his "shame" after viewing the videos and the chairman of Jerusalem's Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, Tommy Lapid, compared the abuse to the anti-Semitism of pre-World War II Europe.

Yad Vashem Council Chair slams settlers for abusing Palestinians

    By Reuters and Haaretz Service

The head of the council of the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial on Saturday assailed Jewish settlers who harass Palestinians in the West Bank city of Hebron, saying the abuse recalled the anti-Semitism of pre-World War Two Europe.

A Yad Vashem spokeswoman told Haaretz that Yad Vashem Council Chairman Yosef (Tommy) Lapid's comments do not reflect the memorial center's position.

Lapid's unusually fierce and public attack was prompted by television footage showing a Hebron settler woman hissing "whore" at her Palestinian neighbor and settler children lobbing rocks at Arab homes.

Lapid, a Holocaust survivor who lost his father to the Nazi genocide, said in a weekly commentary on Israel Radio that the acts of some Hebron settlers reminded him of persecution endured by Jews in his native Yugoslavia on the eve of World War Two.

"It was not crematoria or pogroms that made our life in the diaspora bitter before they began to kill us, but persecution, harassment, stone-throwing, damage to livelihood, intimidation, spitting and scorn," Lapid said.

"I was afraid to go to school, because of the little anti-Semites who used to lay in ambush on the way and beat us up. How is that different from a Palestinian child in Hebron?"

But it increasingly seems that you're just a fucking moron who makes up arguments to justify your monstrously ignorant worldview. What is the last grade you passed, genius?

Please link to as single post or article EVER where ANYONE ever argued that they want the U.S. to lose. Show me a basis for your ignorant argument, or shut your fucking big mouth.

The next time you want to tell me to pull my head out of my ass, here's a suggestion: don't. I'm sick of you and your kind talking the kind of shit you talk here. And that goes for Rio Cowardly Bitch, Barry25, and anyone else who wants to talk that kind of shit about me or to me.

You could make a valid and cohesive argument once in a while without the hateful hyperbole (or, more likely, you actually can't). What I've been trying to tell you all along is that you make me sad, CPT, because you are an American serviceman who should deserve respect from everyone on this board, and every American citizen.

But when you open your mouth and vomit the kind of stupidity you've vomited in recent days, I wonder about you.

The fact that you don't understand why only bolsters every word I just wrote.

Wait, wait...where have I heard that quote before?

So CPT, did you really intend to compare our military to communism?

    ND, it's a simple formula.

2003- Generals and military advisors say we need more troops to win...Bush disagrees....CPT agrees with Bush.

2007- Generals and military advisors say we can't win now with more troops....Bush disagrees...CPT believes him.

Bush says things are fine in 2003-2007...CPT believes him. Anybody saying anything to the contrary, "wants us to lose and loves the terrorists".

Bush says things are "rough" in 2007...CPT believes him. Anybody who says they are AWFUL and we should get out, "wants us to lose and loves the terrorists".

Bush says it's not a "civil war"...CPT believes him...National Intelligence Estimate says it's WORSE than a civil war...they want us to lose and love the terrorists!

Bush leaves office in January 20, 2009 and still losing GIs in Iraq....CPT will blame the Democrats and possibly Democrat President for "losing the war" on January 21st, 2009.

Bush says "Jump!"...CPT says "How high, sir?"

  41. MASK,

I've very much enjoyed your posts of late, not just because you too are calling CPT on his bologna, but because you've provided some good rebuttals and succinct answers to a handful of less-informed bloggers.

    ND,

Well-spoken as usual. Your comment about the respect CPT ought to command made aroused a moment of distress in me, for while I don't agree with anything he says, it pains me to see and hear him as representing a group who in past conflicts and operations enjoyed respect both at home and abroad and surely produced some great leaders. He's become a punching bag, and although some have attempted time and again to engage and enlighten him, I've given him no quarter, but I've never once seen him budge from a standpoint, no matter how idiotic, nor accept the reality that many of the "truths" he's uses to base his argument upon have been outed as despicable lies. That there are many CPTs out there is something that should send a shutter through anyone in their right mind...

My guess is this is what all the hubbub is about regarding Global Warming from the left...distraction. Since Democrats haven't had the stones to pull us out, it looks like they may be adopting this war in a few years. By pointing to a "bigger problem" (climate) they get a pass on whatever happens in Iraq. Al Gore had his 8 years to make something happen if it's that alarming.

I think Snow gave the response that it was unfair and unfortunate. Then why the need for this article?

  75. Take 1 Israeli Submarine. Place it off the coast of Iran. Now position the USS Enterprise just outside the perimeter established by the Israeli sub.

The sub launches a nuclear tipped cruise missile at the Aircraft Carrier, vaporizing it in an instant - killing all 5,000 sailors on board ("worse than 9/11" - that's the key).

The Fleet Commander notifies the President that Iran has (apparently) just nuked the USS Enterprise.

The President declares a (FALSE FLAG) strike against our carrier to be no different that an attack against our soil, and clears the Israeli sub to launch what will appear to be a retaliatory strike against Iran, with a dozen nuclear missiles (all of which are pre-targeted using the targeting codes stolen by Israeli Spy Ariel Weinmann).

The USS Enterprise is the worlds first nuclear powered aircraft carrier. It was Commissioned in 1961 and is due to be decommissioned in 2014 or 2015. The ship was selected to be the "victim" of this "attack" due to its age.

THOSE PLANNING THE ATTACK ARE INSIDE THE U.S. AND ISRAELI GOVERNMENTS and view the loss of the Enterprise crew as a necessary sacrifice to induce Americans to support war against Iran. Put bluntly, the ship and crew are to be cannon fodder.

Here is the DRESS REHEARSAL for the sinking of the USS Enterprise: http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-05-17-ship-reef_x.htm

AND WHY DID THEY FEEL THE NEED FOR THE DRESS REHEARSAL? BECAUSE WHEN THEY TRIED IT A YEAR EARLIER, IT TOOK 25 DAYS TO SINK THE USS AMERICA WITH HIGH EXPLOSIVES! http://www.cdnn.info/news/industry/i050522a.html

that's cute. one thing to remember is that the east german state was the refuge of the leftist victims of the Nazi regime, at least in the beginning. just like in the US the "communists" and socialists were the progressive elements of their society, the idealists, those willing to stand up for the downtrodden.

I have to take your witticism as a compliment, since it implies that unlike you I do not follow a strict doctrinaire policy. the anti communist witch hunts here in the US were by contrast perpetrated by the worst elements of society, see McCarthy and it must be said Nixon, and Hoover.

so it is today. the right wing are the worst elements, with their stalinist conformity, their unquestioning support for the american empire at its worst, and an american exceptionalism, that permits aggressive war, torture and secret gulags all over the world. the track record of this army has been unspectacular. sure we beat Grenada convincingly, made short shrift of Panama.

I thought we were talking about the quality of the soldiers, not the equipment. all in all I preferred the old draft army. I mean we had ELVIS riding on a tank through my childhood woods. try standing in a forest when a tank squadron comes through, that's a noise. if only Muhammed Ali had served, we woulda won in Vietnam.

As far as the Army, I was talking shear power, killing might. But, I would put SEALS or Rangers up against just about anybody. Except maybe the Israeli special forces. The force that rolled into Iraq in 03 was probably one of the most powerful forces ever to engage an enemy. Too bad Chimpy thought they could be used as a diplomatic corp. Armies don't rebuild societies, they are made to break things.

Crab, the quality of an army must be judges by the quality of its opponents. the Blitzkrieg Bop to Baghdad was not a great achievement. take a look at the battle of Kursk, the largest tank battle in world history. 95. How about sending out the National Guard and Dept Of Homeland Security to find the Arizona delegation, chicken/sheep?

  96. I bet they pulled Packwood of his mistress to get him onto the floor.

"One paraphrase from Senator Packwood's sex diary read as follows: After working late, several of the staff stayed to have drinks and socialize. One attractive woman lingered and hovered around me as the others left one by one. When the two of us were alone near midnight, she said she was very impressed to be able to work with such a powerful man. Then we began to touch each other. After kissing and rubbing, with no one else in the office, we dropped to the carpet for an intense session. Once done, still she stayed and talked, not wanting to leave me. Soon we dropped to the floor for a great second round."

i like the terrible twosome, but...

    1. unless they are pulling some kind of brother theodore, they almost certainly dont realize how insane they sound...

    2. ignore this person - easy and effective way to filter out the sandstorms of conspiracy postings obscuring all other postings...

well, rio, as i said to your hip hop intellectual progeny, BARRY25, congratulations. you make your point that some democrats are hypocritical and corrupt, like most republicans. furthermore you are eminently capable of shining the white hot spotlight of public indignation on one crooked democrat per every 5 - 10 crooked republicans. bravo, rio! also, like barry, you remind me of my sister's little dog from when i lived with her in college.

her name was "goody" and she was a precious little spastic cockapoo (the dog, that is) who had the delightful habit of fishing through the kitty litter box on a regular basis for a choice little kitty butt nugget, eat it, then for some unknown reason would invariably wander into my bedroom in the wee hours of the morning, and vomit it up. nothing like waking up to a half digested cat turd in the threshhold of one's room. starts the day off just right...

you conbots do much the same. you eat up that propaganistic right wing crap, half digest it, then puke it up here and elsewhere. i liked my sisters dog and i like you guys too, but the half digested cat turds are disgusting...

  100. ND...I've always sensed that Johanne had one foot in East Berlin, and one foot in West Berlin.

by contrast ND has his nazi prison guard uniform on under his civvies, and is always ready to torture, as long as the victim is evil enough.

    Posted by JOHANNESROLF 02/10/2007 @ 08:52am

I'm going to tell you again, Johannes, while you cower beind your ignore list, if you ever have the opportunity to call me a Nazi to my face, I am going to liberate all of your teeth from their moorings.

    Somebody pass the message along.

  101. Ali served his country far better by willingly going to jail . A true hero.

    Right CPT?

Have you read Dick Marcinko, Crab? You'd appreciate his books. Consider it a friendly recommendation, and let me know what you think.

  102. just like in the US the "communists" and socialists were the progressive elements of their society, the idealists, those willing to stand up for the downtrodden.

Oh sure. And I suppose you believe that the wall was built to keep the West Germans out, rather than the East Germans in. Right, JR?
