Ronald Reagan gave us "voodoo economics." Dennis Kucinich spotted a UFO. Credit Bobby Jindal for making "magnetic levitation" and "volcano monitoring" national buzzwords.
The Louisiana boy wonder has always been an eccentric fellow, converting from Hinduism to Catholicism in high school, changing his name from Piyush to Bobby and reportedly participating in an exorcism in college (at Brown, no less!). He's signed legislation as Governor of Louisiana to chemically castrate sex offenders and recently refused to accept extended unemployment benefits for his economically depressed state as part of the stimulus.
His folksy demeanor, on display in his response to Obama last night, helps to conceal his hard right politics.
Jindal's entire speech revolved around the idea that Americans couldn't rely on the government to solve their problems, trotting out a fancy bit of revisionist history about Hurricane Katrina to prove his point. (I always thought Katrina was evidence of what happens when you appoint unqualified cronies to key government positions and "drown government in the bathtub," to quote antitax crusader Grover Norquist.)
If you haven't noticed, a tug of war is under way inside the GOP between pragmatic moderates who want to modernize the party and recognize that government has a role to play in improving people's lives--such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Charlie Crist--and primarily Southern governors like Jindal, South Carolina's Mark Sanford and Mississippi's Haley Barbour, who want to slash taxes, cut social services and reject government help at a moment of economic crisis. Judging by his speech last night and the GOP caucus on Capitol Hill, the right-wing Southerners are winning the war.
David Brooks, who represents the former view, candidly discussed his thoughts about Jindal and the future of the GOP on the NewsHour last night, describing the speech and the ideology it represented as "insane," "nihilist" and "a disaster for the Republican Party." Take a look:

Did anyone else feel like they were watching Doug Henning when Jindal offered his rebuttal? "Americans can do aaanything! Welcome to the wonderful world of illusion."
Watching Brooks' response to Jindal was one of my favorite moments last night. He was as ashamed of his party's response as he was complimentary to Obama. I personally hope the GOP keeps up with this irrelevant and disproved nonsense to ensure socially responsible progressives and Democrats hold on to the reins for years to come.

The left has been so busy trying to convince Americans through the MSM (see MSNBC and CNN) and on websites like the Nation that for America to move forward, there can be only one be a liberal political view and choice.
They vigorously protest when conservatives like myself state that the left wants only a totalitarian socialist country.
Yet, article after article, and on news program after program, the left castigates conservatives for the audacity to continue to offer the American people an alternative to their socialist agenda.
Marx, Lenin, Mao, and even Stalin would be proud of the American left and the Nation magazine.

"an alternative to their socialist agenda."
which is: more tax cuts. and more tax cuts are precisely the wrong thing to do right now.
"Marx, Lenin, Mao, and even Stalin would be proud of the American left and the Nation magazine."
if you actually believe this, then you (clearly) need to re-read marx and engels. if marx were around today to witness how the GOP has used his name, and his ideas, then he wouldn't stop throwing up.

Jindals politics are fine but his delivery was horrible, where as Obamas delivery was fine but his policy is horrible.
I would love to have Obama deliver Jindals policy.

Jindal should take a page from Obama's book and talk to the public as though they are adults. Instead we get a dumbed down, irrelevant GOP talking point re-spew, delivered as though the target audience was a group of four-year-olds with attention deficit disorder.
"Make sure you say 'Americans can do aaaaanything' at least 50 times during the speech, Bobby, and you'll do just grrrrreat!"

"They vigorously protest when conservatives like myself state that the left wants only a totalitarian socialist country."
because the idea that we are becoming a "totalitarian socialist country" is so absurd, so laughable, that nobody can take it seriously, antisocialist.
do you even remember the bush years? especially in the run-up to his two disastrous wars? left wing opposition to his policies was effectively squashed, and the media just ate it up.
and now, suddenly, you are deeply concerned about altnerative views?

"I would love to have Obama deliver Jindals policy."
i'm sure you would, but:
a) we already tried jindal's "policy" (i.e. tax cuts), and it failed.
b) the majority of the country doesn't want a)

jindal was a total joke, and even the far right wing thought the same.
and it wasn't just his delivery (which was atrocious); it was the content. he basically repeated the same, tired laundry list of "ideas" which have failed the country miserably, and which have been thoroughly rejected by the american people in two straight elections.
not only that, but jindal is a complete and utter hypocrite. he lambastes the stimulus, creates a fuss about not taking the money, then takes it anyway.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss Jindal. He is not a Rhodes Scholar because he participated in an exorcism, and he CLEARLY is the front runner in 2012 for the Republican nomination.
I have consistently said on The Nation's threads over the last two years that Jindal was the person McCain should have picked if he wanted to win, not because I think he is the most progressive Republican, but because he is smarter and more competent than any other Republican on the national stage, and knows when to to put partisan differences aside and roll up his sleeves to deliver for his constituents.
He was not chosen because of his race - the thought was that "Palin voters" would not embrace someone from India, as they truly think America has become "too foreign" (not sufficiently white).
Look for Jindal to continue to play up his corruption fighting in Louisiana, as this could be Obama's weak spot. I think Rahm has convinced Obama that REAL campaign finance reform that takes money completely out of politics with federally funded elections can wait until next term (or put off indefinitely), and the negative consequences of such delay could be apparent prior to the 2012 election.

The point I was making is that "in the minds of the Palin voters" Bobby Jindal is DEFINITELY from India!
I don't think that will matter as much in 2012, as I am sure Palin will give Jindal a very strong endorsement and actively campaign for him. It's the Republican's only shot, so I think the racist Republican crowd will just suck it up to try to regain power.

My God. Are you so brainwashed that you can't see that every day you come on here and castigate the left for offering their view point and saying that they just want to destroy America. You claim that liberals are dangerous to this country and their socialist agenda must be stopped, which is essentially saying that the liberal view point should not exist. You need to get your head checked hypocrite.
On another note. Why is it the right is not offering any actual ideas to solve this problem? This is why the right is reeling backwards right now and is having to remake it's entire identity. They don't offer any IDEAS they just criticize the people who are trying to fix the problems. Maybe if the Republican party wants to remake itself, it should start bring some ideas to the table instead of just criticism.

Jindal really is smart enough to channel Reagan when it helps him get votes, but govern with some sense of what is required to get things done for your constituents.
Even Reagan RAISED taxes 7 out of 8 years when he was president. Jindal clearly knows this, but will use Reagan rhetorically to his political advantage.
The downside to this, is most young voters that Obama appeals to do not remember Ronald Reagan at all.

Hard to imagine T.J. wrote these 200+ years ago.....
John Kennedy once said to a assembled group of scholars in the White House:
"I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered at the White House - with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone."
The quotes below could prove his point.
When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe . Thomas Jefferson
The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. Thomas Jefferson
It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes.. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world. Thomas Jefferson
I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them. Thomas Jefferson
My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government. Thomas Jefferson
No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. Thomas Jefferson
The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government. Thomas Jefferson
The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. Thomas Jefferson

In light of the present financial crisis, it's interesting to read what Thomas Jefferson said in 1802:
'I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.
Obama and congress should re read Jefferson...if they ever have...before "helping" the economy in the manner in which they are doing now.
Posted by YourJomamma at 02/25/2009 @ 1:21pm
The contrast between Jindal and Obama is enormous. Obama "talks up" to Americans, making us feel like we all attended Ivy League colleges by making all citizens participatory equals in fixing the dire state of our country. Jindal gives us the same patronizing, dumbed down lecture we've been getting for the past 8 years. Clearly he thinks he is smarter than everyone else, and sin't trying to hide it. Even David Brooks, whom I detest, is not buying into the continuation of extreme conservative rhetoric, so essentially that leaves the GOP with losing many of their centrist party members. All I can say is "HOORAY!!" And if Bobby Jindal really wants to run in 2012, he should seriously consider hiring a good looking stand-in (possbly the young guy from Slumdog Millionaire), as he is just really, really creepy and scary looking. It will be interesting, because Bobby Jindal represents something that I have been hearing conservatives rant hatred about for years- the unattractive, geeky, over-educated foreigner who takes college slots and jobs away from "real" Americans. I can't wait to hear the rationalizations.

Larry, have you utterly lost your mind? The first point above is beyond bizarre, but like a true fundamentalist minister and self-appointed "authority figure", you maintain that disagreement with your paranoid delusions about totalitarianism constitutes proof of said totalitarianism. Should those of us on the left simply say that you're right, even when your opinions defy anything that remotely represents logic or objective reality? And you call us totalitarian?
On your second point, Larry, there is no socialist agenda in the Obama administration - too bad, really, but there's not. And the country's not ready for that anyway. There is a center-left (the grown-ups call that "moderate liberal") agenda, based on the utterly commie-pinko-anarcho-syndicalist-etc-etc-more-bad-stuff-etc idea that it's hard to have a fully functioning nation unless its inhabitants act as if they have common interests, and are willing to come together once in a while. You know, provide help for those that have fallen on tough times, among other things. Some guy named Jesus of Nazareth used to talk about that sort of stuff. You might consider reading some of that and acting accordingly.
On that last point, Larry, that'd be like our saying that Hitler, Himmler , Goebbels, Pinochet, , the KKK, etc. would approve of American right-wingers.

Actually, jmuso got it right.
I really feel that a goodly portion of the Right, including Larry...is losing their grip on sanity.
And I don't mean that in the usual insulting, hyperbolic way...but an honest psychological assessment.
Think about it...it's all "going away" for him. He had it all once...Repub Congress in full laissez-faire mode and a "born again" President (even purer than Reagan on religion) who was launching a crusade against the infidels....and in a few short years it was all rejected with little chance of it coming back.
Polling showing that even HIS OWN evangelical Christian demographic is shifting...with younger adults less concerned with blocking gay rights or banning abortion, than with the environment and POVERTY!!! In a generation, more people alive in America who remember a "prosperous, peaceful Presidency" under BILL CLINTON...than Ronald Reagan. His televangelist leaders dead or irrelevant or worse...jokes.
And so, what is his response? Why becoming what he once hated. The "people who want this country to fail, just to get their power back or because they hate America!!!!"
Proof?-

You claim that liberals are dangerous to this country and their socialist agenda must be stopped, which is essentially saying that the liberal view point should not exist. You need to get your head checked hypocrite.
On another note. Why is it the right is not offering any actual ideas to solve this problem? This is why the right is reeling backwards right now and is having to remake it's entire identity. They don't offer any IDEAS they just criticize the people who are trying to fix the problems. Maybe if the Republican party wants to remake itself, it should start bring some ideas to the table instead of just criticism.
Posted by Cccomfo1 at 02/25/2009 @ 1:16pm
No, I have not said that ALL liberals are socialists. However, at least 1/3 of the Dems in the House are members of both the Progressive Caucus and the Democratic Socialists.
And in general, but not inclusive of the liberals here, most have stated they have no problem with a greater socialist US with free education through college, free healthcare, free housing, guaranteed incomes, and redistribution of wealth.
And you are echoing the Democratic talking points that the Republicans are offering no solutions. Every Republican amendment was not allowed to be presented in the House by Pelosi, much less voted on. And every Republican proposal in the Senate was either voted down or blocked by the 60 vote cloture rule.
At least try and speak something other than what the DNC, Huffington Post and Daily Kos tell you to say.

The Republicans generally wanted to just take things out of the bill. Show me a Republican draft of how to actually fix our economy that was brought forward by your side. Sometimes I get the feeling that you are either mentally challenged or just have too much youthful arrogance to ever read anything but yourself.
I have stated over and over again through the years here that I don't want censorship of anyone, including liberals.
My comments towards much of the anti-war left were when the go past dissent and start giving aid and comfort to the enemy as people like Medea Benjamin, Cindy Sheehan, Leslie Cagan, and a number of extremist anti-war types here. The ones that say that we are the terrorists.
I want liberals to speak out. I want the people to make clear choices on values. And if like last November they choose values I cannot find acceptable to the constitution, I will continue to speak out.
And if my views become marginal in a leftist US, at least I will hopefully still enjoy the right of free speech to express my views.
And further, at least I back up my positions by voting 3rd party when I cannot find enough agreement with the Rebublican candidate(s). That's why I have more respect for the Nader voters than many of the liberals here who vote "anyone but Bush" or the latest Republican running.

All I know is when the Bush administration cut taxes, my taxes weren't among those and I ended up paying out the ass for it. Thank God I own a house. The interest from my mortgage payments helped to put a dent in all the money I suddenly owed (and I was earning less than 40,000). It's all good though. I just give a little more money to the IRS out of every paycheck(yay!) in addition to what I already pay in taxes. This way I don't end up owing the IRS come April 15. OTOH, it might be my fault. No one here has infringed on your right to say what you want and most people here are more accepting of your views than you are of anyone else's. You throw around asinine insults all the time.
"Sometimes I get the feeling that you are either mentally challenged or just have too much youthful arrogance to ever read anything but yourself."
No one has infringed on your right to say anything. Once again you make things up and try to play the victim. You call anyone who doesn't agree with you a socialist. You then make the claim that anyone who is too far left of you is a traitor to his country. And then somehow claim that because we mount an argument in opposition to yours that means we are infringing on your right to argue. Show me anywhere he where someone has said you don't have the right to say whatever it is you are saying?
I know you are old and all but you need to get rid of your stubborn ways an wake up. I know once you have gotten to your age it's hard to accept new ideas but with the greater flow of information it hard to believe the people like you still believe the things they do.
I hope one day you can open your eyes instead of keeping them firmly shut to reality.

A) It matters if he got in because of Affirmative Action, because he still worked his but off and graduated at the top of his class, as opposed to Bush who both got into their classes because of name and both graduated in mediocrity.
B) I don't see how him gaining an education because of Affirmative Action disqualifies him as a President.

I don't know what you do wrong but it seems you need a better tax person (if it's yourself currently, you need to fire yourself and hire someone who will do a better job than you do).
The 2001 tax cuts reduced the tax rates for every marginal tax bracket. Combined with higher personal exemptions and even higher standard deductions, you had to either have done something wrong in your tax prep or made some financial change in positve income that was significant.
I have saved many people money who either were doing a poor job of tax prep themselves or who used bad paid preparers (and there are a lot of them out there).

It is also horse manure that Obama ran against no one in the election. In the Dem primary he ran against three (I think) other candidates, one of whom is currently the comptroller of the State of Illinois and possessor of one of those locally famous names; he is Dan Hynes, the son of Tom Hynes. In the general elkection it is true that the Republican candifdate withdrew because of some messiness in his divorce from the actress Geri Ryan. The Republicans had to import the right-wing wacko Alan Keyes from Maryland. And Obama crushed him. But to say he ran against no one is simply not true. Also any actual eviden that Affirmative Action was involved in his acceptance to Columbia University or Harvard Law? Or being elected President of the Harvard Law review? Or are these just more baseless accusations hanging in the wind? Jeez, he's black; he must be the beneficiary of Affirmative Action. As a good American I find this type of subtle racism nauseating. FDR was being facetious.
See, Larry (antisocialist) was raised in a John Bircher houshold - and thinks everyone to the left of Joe McCarthy is communist. (Heck, Wacko Welch, the founder of the John Birch Society, accused **Dwight D. Eisenhower** of being a communist - or communist dupe being run by his brother, Milton, Whom Welch accused of being the secret leader of the US Communist party!!!) Truely, really, sincerely, tin-foil-hat, out-of-his-mind, raving, nutso, freak, WACKO!!!
So see FDR was responding to Larry's constant penchant for accusing anyone who voices disagreement with him of being communists, Maxists, socialists...
...Jeez, never mind Happy - it's obviously over your head. You better just stick with slapstick humor. More your speed.

I believe that Louisianans think that Jindal is a good governor, just as a majority of Alaskans think that Palin is a good governor there. I think that's great, and probably a good thing that they continue to serve their states in that capacity. But one of the problems with Jindal, as with Palin, is that his positions are all over the place. Even on a single topic -- the stimulus bill -- if you've seen him on three or four different news shows over the last week, he continues to change his position in terms of what money he wants to accept from the feds, what he wants to reject, and why. Not unlike Palin's stance of being for the bridge to nowhere before she was against it.
I'm also surprised that the Republicans didn't select somebody more experienced to deliver last night's response. Jindal was panned by Fox News last night, as well as several other conservative pundits like David Brooks.

The USGS and PHIVOLCS estimate that their forecasts saved at least 5,000 lives and perhaps as many as 20,000. The people living in the lowlands around Mount Pinatubo were alerted to the impending eruption by the forecasts, and many fled to towns at safer distances from the volcano or took shelter in buildings with strong roofs. Additionally, more than 18,000 American servicemen and their dependents were evacuated from Clark Air Base prior to the June 15 eruption. In the eruption, thousands of weaker roofs, including some on Clark, collapsed under the weight of ash made wet by heavy rains, yet only about 250 lowland residents were killed. Of the 20,000 indigenous Aeta highlanders who lived on the slopes of Mount Pinatubo, all but about 120 were safely evacuated before the eruption completely devastated their villages.
In addition to the many lives saved, property worth hundreds of millions of dollars was protected from damage or destruction in the eruption. When aircraft and other equipment at the U.S. bases were flown to safe areas or covered, losses of at least $200 to 275 million were averted. Philippine and other commercial airlines prevented at least another $50 to 100 million in damage to aircraft by taking similar actions. By heeding warnings of hazardous volcanic ash clouds from Pinatubo, commercial and military pilots avoided severe damage to their aircraft and potentially saved hundreds of lives.

While some of the projects in the [stimulus] bill make sense, their legislation is larded with wasteful spending. It includes ... $140 million for something called 'volcano monitoring.' Instead of monitoring volcanoes, what Congress should be monitoring is the eruption of spending in Washington, DC.

The United States ranks third, behind Indonesia and Japan, in the number of historically active volcanoes (that is, those for which we have written accounts of eruptions).
In addition, about 10 percent of the more than 1,500 volcanoes that have erupted in the past 10,000 years are located in the United States. Most of these volcanoes are found in the Aleutian Islands, the Alaska Peninsula, the Hawaiian Islands, and the Cascade Range of the Pacific Northwest; the remainder are widely distributed in the western part of the Nation.
A few U.S. volcanoes have produced some of the largest and most dangerous types of eruptions in this century, while several others have threatened to erupt.

Alaskans Upset Over Louisiana Governor Jindal's Volcano Comments
By Corey Allen-Young, CBS 11 News Reporter
Updated: 02/25/2009 05:50:03 PM AKST
Many Alaskans aren't happy about the comments made last night, by Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal over volcano monitoring as an example of wasteful spending. But with Alaska being the home of thirty-one active and potentially dangerous volcanoes, many feel the governor's words were not valid. Governor Jindal gave the republican response to President Obama's speech last night with the intentions of uniting Americans, but with his choice of calling out spending dollars on volcano frivolous, it's Alaskans who are upset.

Three generations of MUD VOLCANOES on the LOUISIANA continental slope
(1) Neurauter and Associates, 3311 Dobbin Stream Lane, 77084 Houston, Texas, USA (2) Coastal Studies Institute, Louisiana State University, 70803 Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA Received: 26 October 1993 Revised: 19 May 1994
Abstract Three MUD VOLCANOES were identified in a small area of the upper continental slope of the Gulf of Mexico. One is actively accreting by small, intermittent ERUPTIONS OF GAS AND FLUID MUD. Eruptions occur from a pool of gas- and oil-saturated muds that upwell and spill over the central crater edge and DOWN THE FLANKS OF THE CONESHAPED BUILDUP. A second structure, a possible sand volcano, is in the last stages of activity, with only slight evidence of gas-saturated sediments. THE THIRD STRUCTURE IS A DORMANT MUD VOLCANO WITH FURROWED SIDES AND SCATTERED AUTHIGENIC CARBONATE PLATES AND RUBBLE BUT NO VENTING OF GAS OR FLUIDS.

The Sidoarjo mud flow or Lapindo mud, also informally abbreviated as Lusi, a contraction of Lumpur Sidoarjo (lumpur is the Indonesian word for mud), is a mud volcano in the subdistrict of Porong, Sidoarjo in East Java, Indonesia that has been ongoing since May 2006.
Approximately 2,500 m³ (88,000 cubic feet) of mud are expelled per day, which is equivalent to the contents of a dozen Olympic-size swimming pools.
It appears that the flow will continue indefinitely. AS OF NOVEMBER 2008, THE SIDOARJO MUD FLOW IS CONTAINED BY LEVEES, BUT FURTHER BREAKOUTS ARE POSSIBLE.

Louisiana sliding into the Gulf of Mexico
Thursday, January 4, 2007 in General by Dave Schumaker
Scientists at Louisiana State University analyzed 11 years of GPS measurements recorded in the state and have determined that the southern portion of Louisiana, along the Mississippi Delta is actually sliding into the Gulf of Mexico at a rate of a few millimeters per year. The sliding is thought to be caused by deep underground faults that slip due to the massive weight of sediment that the Mississippi River deposits in the region. This sliding is in addition to previous evidence that suggests that the entire delta is also sinking as well.
These findings have big implications on engineers building new flood control systems in the region as they must now account for the sliding, as well as subsidence.

The Coordinating Committee for Prediction of Volcanic Eruptions will put seven volcanoes in Japan under round-the-clock surveillance as they are likely to affect public life by erupting or becoming active in the coming 100 years, its sources said Saturday. The seven volcanoes include Mt Shirane between Gunma and Tochigi prefectures and Mt Norikura between Nagano and Gifu prefectures, according to the sources.

Bobby Jindal simply restates the failed policies of Ronald Reagan. I'm surprise our economy is still moving even though in a slow pace. Inflation has hit us drastically, yet our wages remain the same. We haven't adapted for these increases in consumer goods much less our skyrocking prices on our home morgages, bills, education for those who are enrolled in college and health care. If you maintain an unbalance amount of wealth for such a minority of the population, you'll end up destroying the economy. I guess the right wing just doesn't get it. They still refuse to accept our history and our struggles to reform our economy and the creation of the role of government that led us out of the Great Depression. We can't depend on failed policies of the past, Franklin D Rooselvet changed our economy into a pure lassiez-faire capitalistic economy into a mixed economy were government regulations are essential to the prosperity of the free market. We can't have fraud or let private enterprise do whatever they want, because there benefits aren't our own benefits. If most of the population drowns into poverty, the economy will remain stable and the rich will consume most of the countries wealth.
"Voodoo Economics" is right. It doesn't work. Communism works only if it's done in a democratic way. If the people control the economy and decide as a society how to run it, then the economic system works, but if the people let politicians and totalitarian rulers run the economy, then get ready to endure a massive economic poverty level. But capitalism at it's purest form....No.
A mixed economy and socialism are the way to go for our countries high standard of living and economic prosperity. Check out Europe and you'll see the superiority in there standard of living compare to ours

Cynical Bobby Jindal...
He thinks Americans are stupid. He says "volcano monitoring" and "magnetic levitation" like they're some frivolous waste.
Either he didn't know how dangerous volcanoes are, or he thinks Americans are stupid.....
Nevado del Ruiz eruption in Colombia in 1985 killed an estimated 23,000 when the city of Armero was buried under 5 metres of mud and debris
Several towns in Washington lie in the path of similar lahar mud slides. They have a warning system in place.
As far as bullet trains....
Other countries have had them for years...
Japan's exemplary public transportation system had the Shinkansen since 1964...
This is not a case failing to keep up with other countries' technology, it is a case of being left behind for years.

Posted by YourJomamma at 02/25/2009 @ 3:48pm
Well, Mask, since John won't answer the question, I will. The law of the land is, if course, the Constitution of the United States, along with the various laws and treaties as mentioned in Article VI. Specifically - " This Constitution, and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the Constitution or laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding.
"The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the members of the several state legislatures, and all executive and judicial officers, both of the United States and of the several states, shall be bound by oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States."
There it is, I'd say. And the treaties include the 1797 Treaty with Tripoli, in which Article 11 states "As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion". Carvings on the SC building do not constitute the law of the land, nor do colonial constitutions.

I know you are fond of misstating things, but I'll tell you again. I'm not a fundamentalist. I'm an Evangelical/Pentecostal. They are very different.
Most Fundamentalists are members of the Southern Baptist Churches or a similar organization.
Fundamentalists do not accept many Evangelicals and almost no Pentecostals as Christian.
If you want to put a label on me, at least get the terminology correct.
Posted by antisocialist at 02/25/2009 @ 4:25pm
Larry, here are a couple of definitions of the term from the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language:
"1. A usually religious movement or point of view characterized by a return to fundamental principles, by rigid adherence to those principles, and often by intolerance of other views and opposition to secularism. 2a. often Fundamentalism An organized, militant Evangelical movement originating in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th century in opposition to Protestant Liberalism and secularism, insisting on the inerrancy of Scripture. b. Adherence to the theology of this movement. "
You'll notice in my post that my use of the word was as a common (lower case "f") rather than a proper (upper-case "f") noun. I think that you have more than demonstrated your a marked tendency toward definition 1, even if you are not an upper-case Fundamentalist.
So, in fact, I've misstated nothing here. But if you're going to bring labels into the discussion, you need to take a serious look at some of your posts. In other words, the "socialism" bit - it would behoove you to be a bit more specific, since socialism tends to comprise a number of different belief systems. Which type of socialism are you fearing here?

I'm trying to work out if you're intellectually lazy or just plain mendacious. Thanks to jmusolino for pointing out the fact that the US was not founded on the Christian religion, most of the founding fathers being deists (believing in the existence of a higher power or deity whilst not believing in organized religion, just in case you can't be bothered to look it up). As for Obama's Chicago primary, he was up against SIX opponents. He won in a landslide with 53% of the vote, 29% ahead of his nearest Democratic rival, with a vote total that nearly equaled that of all eight Republican candidates combined (wikipedia, but google it if you don't trust the source). I have yet to find anything to suggest that Obama benefitted from affirmative action.
Posted by audacity at 02/26/2009 @ 10:04am
I am so tired of the vapid name-calling with the terms socialist, marxist and communist. The U.S. has a long history of corporate intervention and antitrust. Federal receivorship, resulting trusts, nationalization, federal cooperatives, subsidies, corporate tax credits, etc., are all anti-capitalist and commonly applied and maintained by our government since the revoutionary war. They both stimulate and dampen corporate investment, increase and diminish corporate autonomy, and incentivize and chill corporate expansion, depending on the government's goals at the time.
So I chose to ignore certain commentors for their ignorant name calling and uninformed presumptions about just what liberalism and its taxing/spending policies stand for. However, everyone else on this post, and most posts, spend all their time arguing with these lunkheads. You cannot persuade a stubborn bore when their opinions are based on falsehoods and ignorance. If they were interested in educating themselves before speaking, they wouldn't say the stupid things they say in the first place. And anyone who says that Obama is a socialist who hates capitalism is either lying about this belief or is remarkably stupid.
So reading these posts won't be fun until all of you ignore these people and actually discuss the issues rather than the political rhetoric. I know commanche, antisocial, jomamma won't miss me, but I will miss the occasional remarks that display the true thoughtfulness of mask, musilino, koroview and many othes. I don't agree with it all, but I love a good argument. You know, facts, interpretation, supposition, defense, position, that sort of thing. "Obama is marxist" is not an argument, it's a slander and says so much more about the speaker than the subject.

Pull yourself up by your bootstraps and if you fall over and die in the streets of then Bombay, so be it.
Strange mantra 'government' bad is peculiar, considering Governor Jindal is GOVERNMENT.
What has Jindal done as governor in his first 100 days? What has he done for the people of Louisiana without the Federal Funding that trickles in and GOD only knows where it is going. Remember, No ACCOUNTABILITY for that Katrina MONEY?
We should all keep our eyes on the GREATNESS of this NEW REPUBLICAN PARTY LEADER! Do we listen to him because he is a Rhodes Scholar? Are there any other scholars within the Republican Party?

Let's pray that Bobby Jindal and the rest of the GOP leadership continue to spout the same old GOP nostrums that drove America off the cliff.
This will cause more and more Americans to realize the obvious--that America's government, like America's military and America's financial system, cannot be entrusted to GOP crooks, nitwits and mercenaries.
From Reagan's presidency through that of Bush II, the GOP used government power to create the Second Gilded Age in America, at the expense of common men and women.
Give trillions of dollars to the Super Rich and Big Business. Run up multiple enormous unsustainable deficits and debts.
Bankrupt America both morally and financially. Plant the seeds for the GOP Great Depression II.
Deregulate, deregulate, deregulate.
Screw generations of the unborn by making them pay for everything. Take the money and run.
You can find this and much more in "The Bush League of Nations: The Coalition of the Unwilling, the Bullied and the Bribed – the GOP's War on Iraq and America," by James A. Swanson (2008, published by CreateSpace Publishing, 448 pages).

I'm sure there are some rational, intelligent, even progressive citizens trapped in Louisiana, but if this bozo is the governor, most of the citizens there who elected him should be surrounded by barbed wire and gun turrets.
This guy cane across like the bizarre, eccentric nutjob that he is. He also has the communication skills of a homeless schizophrenic..."Kenneth the Page" is Winston Churchill compared to Jindal. I never thought I'd hear David Brooks sounding like Lawrence O'Donnell, but if anyone could bring out his inner Democrat, it's Jindal.
His "speech", if you can call his Captain Kangaroo impersonation a speech, was flat out dismal, and made McCain's pathetic, near-senile oratory last June 3rd in Louisiana, the night Obama clinched the nomination, seem like the Gettysburg address in comparison.
If the GOP calls this "representing their views", they have truly gone over an intellectual cliff and been squashed on the ground below. By 2012, they may be reduced to Klan members and Mike Huckabee's church congregation, who may be the same people. Thanks, George, and good riddance!

BTW, the reason the biting and philosophical humor of Carlin and Pryor and Black and Stewart and Colbert and Letterman and a few other brilliant satirists works so well is because they've told the truth as they see it, and it's usually far more genuine and convincing than the drivel politicians like Jindal and Palin feed us, or try to feed us, in these moronic speeches.
Obama has come along at a time when most of us completely lost any faith or trust in politicians, especially elected officials, to tell us anything but self-serving crap, crafted with one purpose and one purpose only: to absolve them of any accountability, and optimize their chances for re-election. They're like those lab rodents on the little carousel who ring the bell and get a piece of cheese everytime.
Obama seems different, like FDR was different. He was a rich blueblood with polio, who learned humility and empathy through pain and suffering most of us never endure. It altered his view of the world, and enabled him to inspire ordinary people. Obama comes from the bowels of ordinary life, half black, half white, exceptionally intelligent and educated through the strength of his own character and values, but never disconnected from his roots.
Unfortunately, Jindal turned his back on his own roots and heritage, perhaps because he thought this was the way to succeed in the U.S., but it left him a shell, to be filled up with corporate buzzwords and platitudes instead of inspiration. He's a cipher, and it's as apparent as his reactionary politics. He may be smarter than Palin, but he's no less dangerous.

I thought Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal showed himself to be not ready for the national spotlight last night. He is a rank amateur compared to our President.
What he gave us was warmed over George W. Bush. The GOP is about to place itself in the sphere of irrelevance if their so-called leaders continue to sing the old worn out song the party has been singing for the last 29-years plus.
Jindal offered nothing new and diminished himself with his disingenuous tale of a train from 'Disneyland to Las Vegas' in the Recovery Act. THERE IS NO SUCH PROJECT IN THE BILL!
Republican lies were rejected last November and it seems the memo from the American people did not reach what is left of the GOP...that small group of states that were once the Confederacy joined by some plains states, mountain states and Alaska.
Jindal evidently thinks Louisiana mirrors our country but he is terribly mistaken. The politics of North Carolina and Virginia are now actually closer to the politics in California and New York than Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi.
Americans showed in November that we are willing to face forward, look at the challenges of the future and not blink.
The Republican Party thinks it can fool us into thinking that tax cuts will deliver our country out of the mess they put us in with TAX CUTS!
Unemployment in my state of California is nearing 9%. What good is a tax cut to an unemployed person?

I would hope that the Republican party could at least trot out a sound argument full of facts to move this country's debate, but they seem absolutely incapable of arguing an issue on facts and can't even support their own misguided theories without the use of recycled slogans. Are they lost? Why don't they split in two and see which part is more successful?

Unemployment in my state of California is nearing 9%. What good is a tax cut to an unemployed person?
Posted by RWinLA at 02/26/2009 @ 2:43pm
Let's see,....if 9.2 of 10 people, the 92% of the folks still employed, each gets a $100 to $200 tax cut, say suspending the FICA & MediCare for 6 months or a year, wouldn't those tax cuts, $920 to $1,840, generate `pay' for at least 0.8 UNemployed person?
IF one assumes a permanent UNemployed stat of 0.5 person (per 10), that means 9.2 taxpayers' tax cuts can pay 0.3 (=0.8 - 0.5) person really quite well....see, that's both stimulative and FAST!
You Calis are headed for 12%+.....Enjoy!

I don't know Jindal's personal history, but I agree that he could benefit from a "back-to-the-village" trip like Obama did in Kenya. Many immigrants and racial minorities feel compelled to distance themselves from their roots to fit into and thus advance in the American mainstream. Some, like Obama, get back in touch with their roots after achieving some measure of success, and it is my hope for Jindal that he does likewise. The Hindu religion is a BEAUTIFUL religion, full of ancient wisdom like the Bhagavad Gita that teaches core spiritual values of a detachment from ego and the senses, and it was THESE values that the Jesus of Catholicism embraced and embodied so well. Jindal may well come full circle by embarking on a journey to his roots.
Jindal is VERY young (36) and was obviously inspired by Ronald Reagan when he was even younger (10?). I think when he gets a few years of national campaign trail under his belt, he (like all candidates) will be humbled by the American experience, which is far more complex than depicted in Reagan's rhetoric. He will meet families with no boots, and therefore not bootstraps from which to pull themselves up, he will meet small and medium sized business owners and entrepreneurs that were the "catalyst" of government action, and he will meet many whom without government help would cling at the margins of American life, in which many will have fallen between the cracks of the harsh realities of the market.
Supply-side theory and market-only solutions look great in the classroom, but when you see their effects up close, you may be tempted to strangle your Economics professor for filling your head with such self-serving nonsense that primarily benefits the wealthy few at the top.
Posted by Metteyya at 02/26/2009 @ 3:28pm
The very people who espouse Jindal's nonsense are the ones who would dearly have loved to have kept his parents out of the country in the first place and prevented him from becoming an "anchor baby."
God bless Bobby Piyush for working hard and getting to be a governor (although in light of some of the recent gubernatorial scandals, maybe ANYONE truly can grow up to be the F$%^£in' governor, doncha know guys an' gals? From what I saw Tuesday night, there goes your proof.)
But he would do well to take his head out the wrong side of the donkey, stop attacking the Democrats and work with them to save the country from the doom imminent because of eight years of Republican ineptitude and maladministration.

There are now these anti-socialist, anti help your fellow man or what ever name they choose to label themselves. The cause of this exclusionary form of thinking stems from a delusionary state of mind all stepped in arrogance. Upon examination one will readily find there is a serious lack of common sense from this so called anti-socialist. They do not have a basic understanding of life. It is an aspect of life which there is a certainty of knowledge. That is to say, that mankind is not able to determine what race, what religion, what country, what economic status or anything else they will be born into. These idiots arrogantly think they have accomplished their illusionary status in the world all by themselves. It is a sand pit mentality befitting a child like play game.

Bobby was the head of Health and HUman Services for the state of Louisiana at age 22. His contribution included slashing and burning all the state health dept activities and transfering to the private sector. The outcomes immediately got worse- much worse- but he continued to trumpet his successes at small government.
He is perhaps the least thoughtful politician in any significant office in America. Ask him 50 questions about stuff that he doesnt know and he will have 50 answers for you in 15 minutes
The boy wonder is a walking/talking robot who should have been exiled to some immaterial think-tank sometime ago. His manipulation of religion as he markets himself as an evangelical Cathaolic in a bi-polar Catholic/fundamentalist state is quite remarkable. BUt the populous is remarkably thirsty for someone with half a brain in leadership so this is what they got.

Tax cuts for the rich have worked in the past. The problem with Republicans is that they betray their principles when they ditch the meritocracy as applies to Wall Street.
But so do the Dems, who have never believed in meritocratic government. So we get save-the-boweevil programs and a Paulson clone still runs the Fed. Nixon opened up the American working class to competition with Chinese slave labor, but the Dems won't fix that either. Hill can't be bothered with trite human rights concerns or re-thinking a trade policy that has destroyed manufacturing, after all how many gazillion dollars has Bill made on the Chinese lecture circuit?
The Left doesn't really hate Wall Street. Who do you think subsidizes your heroes, the pimps and prostitutes that advertise in the Village Voice?
The Republicans are trying out some tokenism, because they feel that they must, and that's a mistake. They should forget outreach, and let people, no matter their skin tone, come to them as individuals based on shared ideas, if the Repubs can come up with some good ones.
There are some racist dinosaurs in the conservative camp, but the real racism today comes from the Left and is on display in these posts.
Jindal will be accepted as an authentic person by the Left only if he either fashions himself as a "true" Indian, or subscribes to left orthodoxy or both.
He is not allowed the individualism of a white person. George Harrison can sing Hare Hare Krishna all day long, but if Jindal wants to say Howdy Howdy Doody, then he must be a sell-out, ashamed of his "roots." It is an impossibility that he is simply being himself.

So, Larry, this president intends to do something that GOP presidents have been loath to do in the past 28 years - help those who aren't wealthy and powerful. You know, the poor of whom Jesus of Nazareth spoke. You're a minister. How can you attack anyone who tries to use all available resources to help the poor? Do you really think that it matters one iota from whom the starving receive bread? As a supposed devotee of Jesus, how can you put your own creature comforts over the very survival of the least fortunate?
The truth is that this president's programs, and his intangibles, if at all successful, will help everyone in America, you included, by simply restoring a shared sense of community among Americans. You know, that Social Compact that Reagan did his damnedest to shred during his time in the White House. And in doing so, we'll continue restoring the American moral authority that was completely shattered by Bush, Cheney, and the gang of criminals who ran this government for the past 8 years. If that's not doing something for you, then you really do need to take stock of your ministry.

You are misinterpreting my response to Sasha. I was pointing out that the Obama budget does nothing to help most if not all self employed people-contrary to his/her claim..not that I'm looking for anything;
I don't seek anything from the Federal Govt except to keep the system of laws and courts operating and to protect me from those who would harm me and my family, both foreign and domestic.
As to the needy, that is not the role or responsibility of the Federal govt. And it 's not because I don't care. I give whatever I have to others, including shelter in my home if they need it.
It's about functioning according to our constitution. the Federal is supposed to be small and dedicated to the enumerated powers given to it. Everything else the 10th amendment specifically states is left to the States and the people individually.
This is not about helping people, it 's about power. An all powerful central govt.

And the Republican idea that Katrina proves the worthlessness of government is patently absurd - it proves the worthlessness of BAD government, of conservative government, of Republican government. Jindal's use of Katrina was beyond bizarre, and any GOP argument that Katrina shows government to be the problem is akin to the person who murders his parents, then throws himself on the mercy of the court as an orphan.

The Repubs are a corrupt, unprincipled party in opposition to a principally corrupt party with one superstar. As terrible as they are, they are the only thing stopping the Dems from instituting one-party rule for eternity.
But you haven't bothered to defend your side's racism. White lefties enjoy individuality and eclecticism, but only accept provincialist ethnocentrism from their minority "friends." Jindal must be stomped, because he is not a "real" Indian.
As far as the stimulus: tax cuts -fine, jobs for mobbed-up contractors - cool, but how are the billions of dollars spent on non-productive left-wing crap like swamp-rat grooming going to help the proletariat?

I listened to Gov. Jindal's entire speech, although it wasn't easy to stay awake. He said nothing new, offered no ideas or programs, simply repeated the "tax cuts" and "government is bad" mantra the GOP has been peddling for years. I frankly got tired of hearing "Americans can do aaaanything." He must think we are all five-year-old morons. Tax cuts help no one if they don't have an income. In two months I will be out of a job and will probably not be able to find another one because too many Indians are being imported on HB-1 visas to do the work that I,and many of my American colleagues, would gladly do. We are fully capable of doing it, too. But we must be given a chance, not the bum's rush simply becausewe are Americans. I see nothing in Gov. Jindal's speech that will make one bit of difference to me. I would certainly never vote for him, not even for dogcatcher.

Somebody mention Stalinist. Stalin like GW Bush had a constitution that guaranteed a lot of rights to citizens. Stalin - like GW Bush - created a special category of citizen exempt from all these constitutional protections. Bush called these 'detention camps'; Stalin called his 'gulags'. Stalin's people without rights were called 'counter revolutionaries'; Bush's people without rights were called 'illegal enemy combatants'. Bush exploited the attacks on 9/11/2001 as justification for spying on his people. Stalin used the US and British intervention in the Communist Revolution as justification for spying on his people. Bush accused critics of 'emboldening the enemy' with their criticism as did Stalin. Bush's enemies were 'Islamofascists" whereas Stalin's enemies were 'capitalist pigs'. OK, now how are liberals equivalent to Stalinists? I find it strange how conservatives today have intense green eyed envy at the kind of big government enjoyed by Stalin and Mao. I find it equally strange that liberals seem to get dewy eyed about Chairman Mao who was more overtly authoritarian than Stalin and killed as many people as Stalin and Hitler combined. Haven't they read the works of Chairman Mao?

My personal hope is that some folks in Louisiana who have lost their jobs, their houses, etc. come after Jindal w/ baseball bats, or ropes, or some such ... it would be justly deserved; not likely to happen, at least quit yet, but rightly deserved, regardless.
I never cease to be amazed at how profoundly stupid hard right-wingers like Jindal are. Maybe the only thing stupider are the poor folks that are so indoctrinated that they buy that garbage!
Other thing I find simply astounding is how folks like Jindal care more about ideology, and their wacko idea of being "right," than they do about helping, in his case, for example, the people of his state, and their kids.
Just goes to show how profoundly selfish he is; and how that selfishness and self-centeredness leads him to just be simply evil

Meanwhile, replacing old Repub corruption with old left orthodoxy won't help. I'm disappointed. I knew it would be impossible for Obama to hold the wingnuts in check (he probably can't wait till 2010), but he could TRY. He has the high approval ratings, not Congress. So why hand them free reign to write this monster, and then claim that there are no "earmarks"? There is a limited amount of fake money we have to play with.

Mao's most recent biographers, have painfully documented how this one individual is responsible for more than 70 million killed through the years he led the Chinese communists.
Ex:
* Rural purges, 1946-49: 2-5M deaths * Urban purges, 1950-57: 1M * Great Leap Forward: 20-43M * Cultural Revolution: 2-7M * Labor Camps: 20M * Tibet: 0.6-1.2M * TOTAL: 44.5 to 72M
No one is sure exactly how many people perished as a result of the Great Leap, and the spreading hunger. By comparing the number of deaths that could be expected under normal conditions with the number that occurred during the period of the Great Leap famine, scholars have estimated that somewhere between 16.5 million and 40 million people died before the experiment came to an end in 1961, making the Great Leap famine the largest in world history.

'WASHINGTON – United States Senator Mary Landrieu, D-La., today called for the resignation of Doug Whitmer, chief of the staff of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Louisiana Transitional Recovery Office in New Orleans. Her comments follow the CBS Evening News report yesterday that detailed the ongoing investigation into alleged misconduct, including nepotism, sexual harassment and discrimination. CBS reported that Mr. Whitmer had more than 30 complaints filed against him by New Orleans office employees. Senator Landrieu said: "It was very disturbing to see the CBS story about the dysfunction at the New Orleans FEMA recovery office. The people in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama are shocked to hear that our recovery has been slowed by the toxic environment created by the office's management. Beyond any doubt, it would be appropriate for Doug Whitmer to step down, and I am calling for his resignation. "It is the straw that broke the camel's back. There was not one, not a dozen, but 30 complaints against one employee. I believe Secretary Janet Napolitano will do a complete review of FEMA leadership from top to bottom to fire those employees that do not want to help – those that are incapable, incompetent and not doing their job. "We have seen examples of extraordinary waste, fraud and abuse in contractors hired by the government. In this case, it is actually the management of our FEMA office in New Orleans. The clean-up process should begin with the resignation of Doug Whitmer." (Landrieu Press Release)'
Say....didn't Bobby say that he had cleaned up the corruption.......as if the State shouldn't have been reading FEMA the riot act all along........

Hey, jourmama-- You invoke Thomas Jefferson on labor issues, but for me it's tough to stomach the idea that Jefferson is any authority on how to have a sustainable economy that doesn't include slave labor.
And, did anyone else notice how Jindal's comment on his being a 'pre-existing condition' and his father making a payment plan to cover the medical costs of his birth MIGHT have been tied to introduction of some form of workable health care plan, but wasn't?
We have an unacceptable level of infant death due to lack of proper health care in this country, and an unacceptable level of bankruptcies due to outrageous medical bills as well.
Gov. Jindal really missed the boat. Unless his only goal was to say, 'I WAS BORN HERE', and 'MY PARENTS WEREN'T THE BAD KIND OF IMMIGRANTS, THE ONES WHO WORK FOR LESS THAN MINIMUM WAGE AND HAVE NO HEALTH CARE. THEY WERE THE GOOD KIND, THE KIND WHO GET HEALTH INSURANCE, DON'T SUE WHEN THEY AREN'T COVERED, AND MAKE ENOUGH MONEY TO MAKE PAYMENT PLANS TO COVER THE UNINSURED COSTS...' In that case, mission accomplished, Gov.

In Spanish there's a saying about "Verguenza ajena", which translates to something like "Vicarious shame", or what you feel when someone does something that they should be ashamed of, but don't seem to even notice.
Well, that's what I felt sitting here in San Juan, Puerto Rico, watching this Jindal character blame President Obama for NOT saying all that the President had just clearly spelled out in his address.
CRAZY! WHO PAYED, PUSHED, PRESSED OR OTHERWISE FORCED THIS CLOWNISH PUPPET TO PULL THIS SUICIDAL JOKE? HE HAD NO SENSE TO TELL HE COULD NEVER EVER BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY, ANYWHERE?

Plus he lied about (actually everything) ... well, here is the story under the headline;
"Jindal Admits Katrina Story Was False"

Levitate? He didn't spew green soup, his head didn't spin a 360 (beyond the metaphorical in any case) any of which would have been more entertaining than his, well, lies ...

I have family living in Louisiana and I learned that people there are quite upset by Jindal's freezing the budget because he would want to uphold his so-called small government ideal and pretend Louisiana does not need federal aids. He is promoting himself (for a possible '12 chance for presidency) at the expense of ordinary people in Louisiana. My folks voted him and now they regret.
