State of Change

Obama Elected

posted by John Nichols on 11/04/2008 @ 11:03pm

Based on exit poll results from the western states of California, Oregon, Washington and his native Hawaii, Barack Obama was at 11 p.m. on the first Tuesday in November of the 232nd year of the American experiment declared to have been elected the 44th president of the United States.

"That's the true genius of America -- that America can change," declared the first African American ever to be selected to serve as commander-in-chief of nation that just a half century ago still denied the franchise to millions of people of color.

With results still incomplete, the senator from Illinois had already won the states that went to fellow Democrat John Kerry in 2004 along with more than a half dozen states won that year by George Bush: Florida, Virginia, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico. And the senator could still win several additional Bush states for an Electoral College victory of landslide proportions.

At the announcement of Obama's election, a roar of approval arose from a crowd of tens of thousands of people -- who reflected that American mosaic -- that had gathered at Chicago's Grant Park to celebrate one of the most dramatic moments in American political history.

Inside Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church, the congregation of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., cheers arose for the young senator who was nominated on the 45th anniversary of the civil rights leader's "I Have a Dream" speech.

Georgia Congressman John Lewis, who marched with King, admitted that that as a young activist, "I never had any idea that I would live to see an African-American elected president of the United States."

"There has been a transformation of American politics tonight," said Lewis.

Shortly afterward the western states announced for Obama, McCain offered a gracious concession, calling Obama's win "historic" and speaking of the evidence it provided of America's progress from the "bigotries of the past."

Calling Obama "a good man," McCain pledged to aid an Obama presidency and to urged his supporters to "offer our next president our good will."

Obama won with strong support from African Americans (96 percent), Jews (77 percent), gays and lesbians (71 percent), first-time voters (68 percent), Latinos (67 percent), Asians (63 percent), voters under 30 (66 percent), union members (59 percent) and women (55 percent).

While the win had its demographic side, there was, as well, a partisan and ideological component.

Obama won the support of 89 percent of self-described liberals, 60 percent of moderates and 19 percent of conservatives.

Among Americans who said "government should do more to solve problems" 76 percent voted for Obama. Among those who expressed the deepest worries about the economy, the Democrat was an overwhelming 62-36 favorite.

And Obama, who won the Democratic nomination in no small measure because of he had spoken out against attacking Iraq, won the support of 87 percent of those voters who objected to the war.

FrankGrits, I want to thank you for your unprecedented reliability in always being wrong at every step of the election process. I could set a watch by you if I held it up to the mirror.

    Oh,

    Hilary

    SJChermak, first

So while you're stepping into a dry pair of britches, I'd like to remind the audience of your complacent prediction that, at the time of Palin's designation as VP-nominee, that McCain had it locked.

Happy, just for you, from the overture to Pippin

Anyway, a win...what is going on in hills of East; is it the old South? West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee: all solid McCain. All glories to North Carolina and Virginia; now, one day US flags might re-appear on back-packs (esp with a smiling black face on 'em). The Right should chill and cede to the Union...it'll be OK.

Postings that blame Obama for anything bad that happens for the next 4 years, while anything good will be attributed to Dubya's policies just kicking in.

Some of Obama's tax polocies as well as some other programs will be put on hold until the economy improves. He can't afford to tax the system while it's in such bad shape.

The end of the occupation of Iraq. It will be easier for Obama to accomplish this now that the economy is the greatest concern of Americans.

Palin laying all of the blame on McCain and his people for her poor apperances and anything else that affects her image.

She called her mom when she realized her very 1st vote really worked. Her mom called me about it really excited as they're both in another state a thousand + miles away.

  100. Welcome back from virtual exile MASK.

HAPPY, this is what I had in mind several months ago when you asked me what I meant by "Obama will crush McCain." Although, I was off my popular vote prediction of 53-47.

Great night. Apart from everything else, it is very comforting to know that Obama likely will have two or maybe three justices to the S. Ct. to nominate.

The McCain of 2000 would have made this a closer election - maybe he would have even pulled it out. This election has to make the GOP rethink their national political strategy. Too much pandering to the base. The time machine of tired old scare tactics and stereotypes did not work. The Rove way as it exists now is finished. The selection of Palin ended up being the nail in the coffin. Bet he wishes now that he picked Lieberman. Just my two cents.

Now let's hope the Democrats and Obama don't blow the opportunity.

  128. Cccomfo1,

You said "Hopefully America will once again be the last best hope for the world."

It never was not that. It never stopped being that, it did not take an 8-year hiatus.

There is a disturbing trend here. It is obvious that the political left does not accept the will of the voter unless the voters choice comes out the way the left wants it.

Of course, since the beginnings of this country, there has been partisan bickering and arguing, as there should be in a free society.

But, when elections were held, whatever the outcome, the losing side would resign themselves to the fact that the will of the voter decided otherwise, and to try again another day.

The President, regardless of which party he was, earned at least some "due" or grudging respect from those of the opposite party. This is not to say that there never was criticism, or that there should not be criticism, but there was still some respect.

That changed in 2000. President Bush has been vilified and condemned like no politician I have seen in my lifetime.

The left never accepted the 2000 results, even though this whole contortion about the vote being stolen has never been proven.

Just coming to this website in the last few months, there has been article after article warning leftists against attempts to steal the election. The left has been phobic about this, a phobia now proven to be unfounded.

Most conservatives, including me, accept the will of the voter last night even though we believe the choice was totally wrong.

But it is clear the left does not accept the will of the voter anymore, unless the will of the voter coincides with the will of the left.

    Posted by sjchermak at 11/05/2008 @ 07:18am

  129. McCain's concession speech last night proved again what was wrong with his campaign and that was he really had no control over it. I personally believe that Palin (or is it Palenty as she was introduced at the RNC? =p) was not his choice and instead she was choosen in hopes that the "Hillary" voters would flock to the McCain campaign. Ah well it doesn't matter anymore does it? I am just wondering where the blame game (or is it the crying game?) is going to start and who will be blamed for what.

Personally I am happy that McCain did not win and that this election is a landslide victory and that the states that are still being contested will not make a difference, besides McCain conceeded anyhow. Now Palin can go back to Alaska so she can see Russia from her porch. (Which she cannot by the way unless she lives on an island in the Aleutians.) I personally was more worried about a McCain/Palin administration than an Obama/Biden administration.

Looks like America has had enough of your politics. And, as "the left" fought for voting rights for the last 8 years, illegalities were kept to a minimum this time around. If you still think the 2000 and 2004 elections were on the up and up, maybe you need to look back into the republicans that were convicted.

Or does a conviction of vote tampering not mean anything to you?

President Barak Hussein Obama. Fair and square.

Rolls of your tongue, doesn't it?

    President Barak Hussein Obama.

    The peoples choice.

338 electoral votes. No hanging chads, no Ohio voter suppression, no florida purged voting rolls. no waiting till Dec 15.

  132. crabwalk,

You said "Have a great 4 years backing your new president with all of your patriotic heart!! Dissent is Un-American while at war. Bush taught us that, I expect you to live it."

But you totally refused to do the same for the past 8 years. Totally refused, but now in the fit of lib arrogance, you "expect" me to "live it".

That brings up a continuation to my original thoughts. Now, criticism of Barack Obama will not be tolerated. The same people who screamed in fury anytime their patriotism was being questioned, screamed that this is not Nazi Germany and they are not required to march like storm troopers in support of a government they oppose, will absolutely demand total loyalty to the new government.

Anybody that dare question the new president will be condemned.

Mask has already set the stage for this. Mask indicates that I will contridict myself within days.

I said in my original posting that criticism of a president by the opposition party has gone on since the beginning of this country, and that in itself is not wrong. But then I pointed out the unbridled torrent of rage that has been applied to George W. Bush since day one of his Presidency.

Agreeing with the will of the voter is not the same as never criticizing. But it is clear that the left not only criticized, which is their right in a free society, but they did not agree with the will of the voter in 2000 or in 2004. The rage, fury and fixation that elections were stolen were beyond anything I have ever seen before directed towards a president of either party.

Mask has me on record, and thus any criticism of Barack Obama will be declared by Mask to be contridiction. Mask and crabwalk have made my points for me.

Is Mask really Maskdelta? Do you have 2 personalities?

  137. Cccomfo1,

I am not full of it. My opinion that the left did not agree with the will of the voter is my personal observation that no respect or deference was ever shown towards President Bush by the left, that I could see, at least to the same degree that happened to presidents of either party in the past.

You have things like President Bush honoring Ted Kennedy during the signing of that education bill, and saying complimentary things about the Clintons when they were in the White House for the unveiling of Slick Willie's official portrait, and then both Hillary and Ted crucifying President Bush at the next available opportunity.

It is just my opinion that the degree of personal invective towards President Bush is more than I ever remember any President getting before.

And if you label me as partisian Conservative, and thus just looking at this from biased perspective, I would point out (as I have in the past on these blogs) that until the late 90's I was a consistent Democrat voter.

Also, in addition to this, I would cite the left's continuing fixation about stolen elections. They have never gotten over 2000. As evidence, I would point out the continual phobia and fixation about making sure this election would not be "stolen", by authors on this site over the last couple of months. A phobia that turned out to be unfounded. A clear picture developed that any loss by the left in an election is looked upon or rationalized as a "theft" upon them, a theft they can not get over and just move on and fight another day.

People on both sides comment on, criticize and put down those on the opposite side of the political fence, nothing wrong with that in a free society.

It is just to the degree that the left has carried this in recent years.

SJ is just so blinded by partisanship that he actually believes that when the left calls for a recount it is just disagreeing with the will of the voters and trying to steal the election. But I guarantee you, if the right ever called for a recount he would be the first to defend it as just confirming that the will of the voters is what is being upheld because that is how the rest of us, who learned to think for ourselves, look at it.

    Posted by Cccomfo1 at 11/05/2008 @ 12:01pm

  139. i'm nobody,

President Bush did receive a measure of bi-partisian support after 9/11, he lost that support when he did what was necessary to fight and defeat a clear source of future terror.

Doing this is obviously not tolerated by the left in this country and by most of the utopias in Europe. You are supposed to give peace a chance until the boom really falls and it gets way worse, and the war comes anyway.

Apparently only then can you act. For once we acted when appropriate, instead of waiting and letting more bad stuff happen, and fortunately Tony Blair (a.k.a. "the lapdog" or "the poodle") did not fit the normal European mold.

    Posted by sjchermak at 11/05/2008 @ 12:05pm

  140. Cccomfo1,

Calling for a recount is not the problem. When the recount was legally resolved, but continuing to demand more counting, then that gets to be a problem.

The Gore team did not make a legal case acceptable to the courts for more manual counting. But then manual counting was allowed anyway, and only in areas Gore wanted counted, not statewide.

And - I have seen discussion of floors where the ballots were kept littered with chads. How did the chads fall off of the ballots? Were there attempts to not just count the votes but alter the votes, towards Gore?

The thing was legally resolved, but the left still did not accept it. And studies have showed that if continual counting had been allowed to continue, even though that would have been counter to election law, that President Bush would have kept winning anyway.

So how long was Gore going to bog things down? When was he ever going to accept defeat?

The answer is, we would still be counting today, if Gore had his way.

This is not partisianship on my part, but just part of the public record.

    http://archives.cnn.com/ 2000/ALLPOLITICS/stories /12/13/got.here/index.html

That is the 2000 election timeline, from CNN. CNN - cable news network, not conservative news network.

It is plain as day Preident Bush won fair and square. There is no partisianship to this, you tellng me I do not think for myself is beginning to wear a little thin.

The left has never accepted the 2000 result, to the point of obsession. To me that is not accepting the will of the voter, when it becomes a complete obsession and phobia, which is plainly evident in the number of "warning" articles over the last couple of months on this website.

SJCHER will totally contradict his "Bush won fair and square" approach...

when Rush starts telling him that "Obama had an ELECTORAL COLLEGE landslide, not a popular vote landslide" (thus ignoring how Bush won in 2000) and "The American people were FOOLED by this guy...they don't know what they're getting" (thus negating his "I respect the will of the people" promise).

    Posted by Mask at 11/05/2008 @ 12:29pm

  142. sjchermak-Bush did not lose favor because he fought against a future source of terrorism nor did he just lose favor with the left. The country isn't divided into the left and right. Most Americans are like me and have views that cross those lines and Bush lost favor with most everyone, but the far right..There is only a handful of you left that believe that Saddam was a threat and that the new Iraq is good and more will dislike the new Iraq as more facts come to light about them.

    Posted by i'm nobody at 11/05/2008 @ 12:57pm

  143. Hi Mask,

    You lose your bet.

I have too much else to worry about than to worry about or concern myself with how Obama won, or why.

Concerns now will be the hope that Obama, after the type of detailed discussions with the military that a President can have, realizes that he can not just up and leave Iraq according to an artificial timetable set during his campaign, and that military involvement in Iraq needs to be based on the conditions in Iraq and the need to defeat terrorist who want to kill us and kill freedom loving Iraqis.

And that Obama realizes he needs to do what is right rather than what the political left, the Katrina Vanden Heuvels of the world, et. al., think he should do.

And that he will do what should be done even if it pisses the Katrina Vanden Heuvels, et. al. off.

That is what one needs to hope for and worry about now.

    Posted by sjchermak at 11/05/2008 @ 1:05pm

  144. i'm nobody,

The only reason that more people do not believe that Saddam was a threat is that the media has reinvented history, on the fly, to airbrush out what was going on in the world during the 90's and up until 2003, and that the media has not pointed out the actions Saddam was taking and would have taken had he not been removed, that point to what he intended to be and what role he intended to play, as a troublemaker and nuiscance who would have continued to develop WMD which, in the hands of terrorists, may have killed millions.

People in this country are used to things coming easy now (this statement refers to us as a whole, and not about individuals who may or may not be having hardships). If you want dinner, you do not have to cook for 2 hours, just nuke it in a microwave and have dinner in 5 minutes.

Applicances and cars are now more reliable and trouble free than they were even 20 years ago.

Some stores are open all of the time and if you can't get something there, then order it on the internet and have it by tomorrow.

People have no tolerance for waiting or hardship to any degree. We have had generations of people now who did not live through real national hardship in the form of World War II or the Great Depression.

With no national general tolerance for bearing with national hard times, people thing immediate solutions are possible, instant answers always available, and thus react negatively when a long war against terrorists (who want to kill us) takes place.

They thing it should be solved immediately and thus those who opposed our actions or think we should quit now can leverage the national mood quite easily. Which they, of course, have done quite successfully.

This explains the Bush unpopularity - in my own thoughts and words.

  146. sjchermak-The media did not rewrite history nor can anyone show that saddam was a threat nor can you show that the war accomplished anything good. All it did was divert attention away from those attacked us.

  147. You lose your bet.

I have too much else to worry about than to worry about or concern myself with how Obama won, or why.----Posted by sjchermak at 11/05/2008 @ 1:05pm

Note: I said "weeks, if not days".

Some time to go yet, SJ. And many hours of apologia from Rush yet to come.
