Cheney-McCain Team Celebrated... By Obama

posted by John Nichols on 11/02/2008 @ 4:58pm

Vice President Dick Cheney's endorsement of John McCain's presidential candidacy has become campaign trail fodder... for McCain's opponent.

Cheney said last week: "I'm delighted to support John McCain and I'm pleased that he's chosen a running mate with executive talent, toughness and common sense, our next vice president in Sarah Palin."

Within minutes, the campaign of Democrat Barack Obama had a blistering television and internet ad that repeatedly shows Cheney expressing his delight with McCain.

What's more, Obama incorporated references to the Cheney endorsement into his stump speech on the final weekend of the 2008 presidential race.

"I'd like to congratulate Senator McCain on this endorsement because he really earned it," said a grinning Obama. "That endorsement didn't come easy. Senator McCain had to vote 90 per cent of the time with George Bush and Dick Cheney to get it. He served as Washington's biggest cheerleader for going to war in Iraq, and supports economic policies that are no different from the last eight years. So Senator McCain worked hard to get Dick Cheney's support."

Obama said that the vice president, whose approval rating hovers around 18 percent, "knows that with John McCain you get a 'twofer': George Bush's economic policy and Dick Cheney's foreign policy - but that's a risk we cannot afford to take."

Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden was, for once, more succinct. "Just today, Vice President Cheney came out and endorsed John McCain" Biden told a crowd in Marion, Ohio. "Folks, if you need any more proof!"

  1. So is Cheney stupid?

or deliberately sabotaging McCain at this point?!?!????

    If so....why?

  2. A bit of revenge, perhaps, on Tantrum Boy for the attempt to disown Bush/Cheney?

  3. Who else would Cheney be endorsing?

    Posted by lvliberty1 at 11/02/2008 @ 6:56pm

    Let's think...

    Bob Barr?

Nope, wants to end the War of Dick and restore the checks and balances inherent to the Constitution.

    Cynthia McKinney?

Nope. Aside from being a former Democrat, she's anti big oil, the entire reason for the War of Dick.

    Barack Obama?

Against the War of Dick from the beginning, against humongous tax cuts for the rich and for corporations, for a responsible economic policy, for checks and balances.

Johnny Mack (aka Shrub's wingman, the archetype of Tom Cruise's "Maverick")

For the War of Dick For expanding the War of Dick For entitlement programs for the top 5% of wage earners (aka the Bush tax cuts) For the accumulation of executive power For Corporate welfare

Yep, I guess that's why Johnny Mack got the Dick vote.

This is what Cheney told ABC News' Martha Raddatz.

When asked about how that jibes with recent polls that show about two-thirds of Americans say the fight in Iraq is not worth it, Cheney replied, "So?"

    ****************************************

Cheney knew he was on national television.

He is a political animal acutely aware of the ramifications of his words and the consequences that could follow.

    And yet.....he said "so?"

Not a reasoned, thoughtful response, but a childish temper tantrum "so?" because she made him angry.

Seems republicans can speak like little children as well.

Actually, it means that Dick Cheney couldn't say 'who gives a fuck?' on national TV.

It was a demonstration of the contempt with which this sociopath views Americans.

If Reverend Larry's casual dismissals of the sins of the Bush/Cheney cabal haven't shocked you yet you haven't been paying all that much attention. Frankly his logical distortions for justifying any wrong the Right commits are almost laughable. It's gonna be nice when the generation of black/white thinking finally hits retirement age.

    Posted by lvliberty1 at 11/02/2008 @ 6:56pm

hmmm...how about not endorsing anyone at all? Why not just go quietly into the good night? After all, no one had missed him - or his endorsement - all these weeks and month of the campaign. Why make a public endorsement now, when any voters who might see it *positively* are bound anyway to have been in McCain's column all through?

    Posted by asian_observer at 11/02/2008 @ 9:42pm

  12. Cheney, by all accounts, has no time for Mccain personally... So is it a surprise that he would "endorse" the maverick..?? lol

Lets (by that I mean all common sense folk) hope for not staying the course on election day.

I have been overseas for the past 9 months in multiple countries from one end of the Med to the other, and i have not found ONE individual that expresses a desire to see another repub-li-clone in the white house. YES MY FRIENDS from the RIGHT, I understand they dont vote, but for the most part, Europeans are so much more connected/informed on political matters. \ If i asked 100 Americans to find Germany on the globe, how many could come within 500 miles...? Yet The McCain campaign throws around words like Marxist/Socialist for the red meat crowd to devour... WTF do you think the TOOLS at thier rallys know about EITHER of the subjects..???

A vote for Mccain is A VOTE FOR IGNORANCE. WAKE UP!

Yeah he's pretty much Archie Bunker with better grammar. Everytime I put the effort out and box him in, he either non-responds or games it like this current weasel. Here, of course, he makes up a false dichotomy, "who else?"

For anyone with a toe in reality the option to endorsing was, as asian bothered to spell out, "hmmm...how about not endorsing anyone at all?

His stand-by, mark my words, is generic-contrariness. Subject is X. Surprise, he becomes Opposite Man! With a bit of very straight-neocon talking point drivel.

Works everytime. Folks respond. He does little searches for himself, cuts, pastes, rinse, repeat. It's all good except in the end, though he's superficially cordial, he's just as frozen-hearted and dead-minded to logic, truth, facts, reality as Happy, Libzuck, Rio, etc.

  20. Mask, Cheney's endorsement won't cost McCain a single vote, but his silence could have indeed hurt McCain inside the republican far right base.

Those people are reading Goethe's Faust to understand why they should get hammered on election day, stumble into the booth and vote for McCain! :-)

  22. "A vote for Mccain is A VOTE FOR IGNORANCE. WAKE UP!"

Dumberica: anti-science, anti-literature, anti-philosophy, anti-history, anti-women's rights, anti-environment (how dumb is that?) intolerant, fundamentalist, racist, sexist. Second- or third-rate. Palin Country. It's a big place with a large population. Rational Thought is not one of its big exports. Dick Cheney lives there. Who can say what motivates these people, apart from hate and fear?

  23. Posted by lvliberty1 at 11/03/2008 @ 01:38am

Now it's not conservatives that lack the capacity for rational thought. There's a whole load of conservatives that are quite smart and exceptionally rational.

It's that special brand of fanatical conservative-in-name-only that America seems to breed.

To be honest, I identify more with a conservative America than a liberal one.

Unfortunately for America this current breed of GOP is so far from conservative they've now entered the land of Marx and Engels.

Isn't it sad that the more conservative candidate is the Democrat in the race?

At least the GOP has managed to dupe a bunch of people into thinking otherwise due to constant "moral majority" ramblings.

How's it feel to be part of that 18% friend? Pretty frustrating I would guess.

    Posted by TexasFlood at 11/03/2008 @ 01:53am

  26. For anyone asking why...

Cheyney is being petty and vindictive towards McCain and the GOP.

Think about it. How did Cheyney ever resemble a traditional Republican? He used the GOP as a means to acheive power. And, now that any Republican who wants to get elected forgot his name, Cheyney is screwing them over.

  27. lvliberty1: Your team is losing and you are lashing out, we understand. You hate liberals, that much is obvious, but your hate is a sad thing to witness especially now when we as a nation should be working together. I believe Jesus would agree. We don't hate you, we just don't want to hear that message anymore, we don't want you in charge anymore, enough is enough. Reasonable minds agree, the team in charge grossly mismanaged things. The majority demands change and we are lifting our voices together to be heard...and we are building monumental momentum. Change will occur whether you like it or not. And if we (Democrats, Republicans, and Independents alike) do not make this change happen, if we do not see this through THIS TIME, we most certainly will are a nation of fools. So my message to you, sir, is this and I say this respectfully: Enough is enough.

When cornered you use one of a few predictable weapons over and over.

You especially love the specific to general move.

Projection has got to be your #1 drug of choice.

    Y---a----w------n!

But, here goes - your words:

1- "lust for greed?" Oooo how biblic! So now only "liberals" sin?

2- "cold hearted desire to see others suffer?" Another idiotic strawman. I didn't accuse you of this. It's a problem of overcompartmentalization and rigidity.

Who exactly would you say fits this description? Hollywood Hannibal, Kim Jong Il, Saddam, Pol Pot - even some of these even love their kids and grandkids.

How about someone who lies to send other folks' kids to their deaths? Pretty close I'd say.

3- "But you may continue to enjoy living with most leftists in dystopia-it suits you" OOOOOooooo the knock out punch?!

Nope, just more projected heat. This from the same Reverend Projection of "If the only thing [Cheney] ever accomplished was to continually rag on the leftists he would remain a heroic figure to me.

    I'm a conservative fool. You're only a fool.
