Whatever shred of credibility Matt Drudge had retained after his years of rumor-mongering is now gone. Yesterday afternoon Drudge splashed a sensational headline across his front-page: "MCCAIN VOLUNTEER ATTACKED AND MUTILATED IN PITTSBURGH -- with a 'B' carved into her face."
Drudge linked to a story by a Pittsburgh TV station claiming that a McCain volunteer was robbed and then beaten when the attacker spotted a McCain sticker on her car. Channel 4 reported:
Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard tells Channel 4 Action News that the victim was robbed at knifepoint on Wednesday night outside of a Citizens Bank near Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street just before 9 p.m.
Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim's car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter "B" into her face, Richard said.
Soon a photo of the alleged victim surfaced online. It looked fishy from the beginning--the "B" seemed perfectly carved and the black eye looked awfully like mascara. News outlets liked Salon immediately jumped on the victim's "inconsistencies."
Turns out Ashley Todd, a 20-year-old College Republican from Texas, made it all up. She confessed today.
Todd, Drudge and the McCain supporters who pushed this racially-incendiary story should be deeply ashamed of themselves. It is the lowest blow in an already disgustingly dirty campaign. As Josh Marshall writes, "To say this is a dark moment does not do justice to the deep awfulness of this stunt. It's the metaphoric pedal-to-the-medal for the sleazy sub-rosa campaign of racial fear-mongering that so far has failed to derail Obama's candidacy."
UPDATE: New Drudge headline: "She Made It Up!" It gets worse for McCain--apparently his Pennsylvania communication director told reporters that the fake "B" carved into Todd's face stood for Barack. Suffice to say, this isn't going to help them in the Keystone state.

Hold tight, everyone. You will be seeing a of this crap in the next two weeks. The GOP has is already scrambling with their kitchen sink strategy. They are desperate and as a consequence, have nothing to lose. They are cornered. It's going to be ugly.
Posted by Hman23 at 10/24/2008 @ 2:45pm
What a fine example of hypocrisy.
I thought it was instantly recognizable as a hoax when the B was backwards on her stupid face! Funny, like Downey's swastika years ago...
But back to the hypocrisy part. Listen, don't act all high and mightly on this one. If you can't think of comparable hoaxes by members of the cultural left, you are being dishonest.
Stories like this are cheap and stupid, you know, like the story where Obama's handlers moved some obviously Muslim young women from the backdrop seats on one of his stump speeches...
I can't magine why the Nation is competing with Matt Drudge at this level. what a disappointment.
And someone as intelligent as LoC and Hman23 sniffs their disapproval paining everyone on the right with the broad brush of association. What an insult to THEIR intelligence.

C'mon, you are better than that. I didn't say "everyone on the right" was going to be responsible, or even imply it. Nor would I think you would understand me to mean that we can expect hundreds of faked assaults. Just that we have (and will) see more desperate attacks on the campaign. You cannot deny the rhetoric and vitriol from the McCain side has turned uglier.

Incredible. It doesn't surprise me considering this is the same party that lied to get us into a war and implemented policies designed to make the rich richer at everyone else's expense. Do you note a sense of desperation and anger in their tactics? It's because most people have figured out what they've been up to and they are not happy about it. Time for change.
Posted by cberkland at 10/24/2008 @ 3:25pm
The moral of the story: perspective matters. It is not surprising that this narrow-minded person, thoroughly convinced of the inherent rightness of her own perspective, failed because she never considered that the "B" would appear backwards to others. I don't want to belabor the point, but there is a poignant lesson about small-minded worldviews here.

We must keep up the attack no matter what the cost, for winning is everything! Disinformation is our friend!! If they are loud, we must be louder. We must be bold or suffer defeat!! This is not acceptable!! REDRIVER, you must intensify your rant!! We can barely hear you down where we are!! The Fourth Reich must be instituted in these un-united states!! If they say yes, we must say no... If they say no, we must say yes. Embrace the conflict! Get a high colonic! Spread the sickness from sea to sea until the internal conflict has begun in earnest. When they speak we must put our fingers in our ears until the unacceptable noise goes away.
And if, by some disastrous occurrence of chance we lose this battle, we must all bite down on a cyanide capsule! Quickly now!!! I can hear the sounds of battle on the front as it approaches!!

"Stories like this are cheap and stupid, you know, like the story where Obama's handlers moved some obviously Muslim young women from the backdrop seats on one of his stump speeches..."
No, it is not like this, and to whomever mentioned Tawana Brawley, it's not like that either. I may be wrong, of course, but I doubt Obama called the police and told them Hilary Clinton (I think the Moslem woman was moved during a speech given in the primary) engaged in some crime related to her presence. As well, I may again be wrong, but I don't recall Al Sharpton being the Democratic or Republican candidate for President of the United States when the Brawley incident took place.
Related to the campaign? No. But the responses that were given, particularly by those closely affiliated with the Republican party--unless Matt Drudge is part of the liberal media.
Then again, the article was about Drudge and McCain supporters pushing the story, not the McCain campaign. I guess your point is somewhat pointless.

Posted by ficheye at 10/24/2008 @ 5:20pm
Pitiful. Truly pitiful. I'm just glad this kind of radically insane discourse (on either sides) represents an extreme minority.
Look. I don't think, and no one's given reason to believe, that this incident was instigated by the McCain campaign, and even if it were true, I don't know why in the world anyone would vote on it. Would the message be "see, only the desperate and angry people vote against McCain"? I just don't think this would benefit the McCain campaign even if it were genuine, because anyone who would be swayed by it is probably not voting for Obama right now anyway.
Moreover, I don't think there's any good reason to think that this sort of tactic represents conservatism, anymore than such incidents in favor of Obama are representative of liberals. This incident may be a case of reporters jumping too fast on a story, but I don't know why it deserves any meaningful attention whatsoever (which could arguably make my posting on the subject a bit hypocritical, but I felt this needed to be put to rest).

I brought up Tawanna Brawley's because the two underlying models are the same. Both stunts were potentially incendiary regarding the issues of race. However, both girls were obviously doing something neither family approved of (being in the company of unapproved boys comes to mind) and came up with these stories to distract from the truth.

My 'humor' was directed towards the awful spectre of McCarthyism that seems to be getting a small toehold. If you aren't freaked out, you should be. There's a growing laundry list of prejudiced, racial, anti-american accusations that needs to be addressed. You help me out here and I won't channel Francis Parker Yockey.
Posted by ficheye at 10/24/2008 @ 9:54pm
This is unfortunate but the only story is yet another American who is not getting the mental health care that they need. Is this really a crime, or a sick young woman who needs help. I imagine she doesn't have a health plan that will get her mental health treatment. We here the candidates both talking about there health care plans (or in McCain's case the notion that millions going to the emergency room is not a form of Universal Socialized health care paid by all) but suffice it to say that you won't have to go very far to discover the lack of mental health coverage. In terms of Matt Drudge, he does what he does and I would of posted the story too, especially if I could link it back into a broadcast station.

Let's see, the McCain camp wages an utterly dishonorable campaign, inciting unrepudiated calls for, among other things, his opponent's assassination (btw, check out video of McCain's barely contained smile the first time someone yelled "terrorist"), and this sort of thing comes as a surprise to them, or any of his supporters? McCain lied (boy, that's news isn't it?) during the 3rd debate when he said he'd repudiated all of that. What utter bullshit. The GOP has been race-baiting since the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Their glee at jumping al over this speaks volumes about the level to which they've descended. They encourage this sort of crap and worse, they attempt to use it for their own lowlife purposes, then when it blows up in their faces, they scurry like rats, and of course, they'll make themselves the victims here, like good little right-wingers.

This story is typical Republican election tactics that are growing old and tiresome! I would imagine it gets worse before it ever gets better. She is just one more of the fringe lunatics that follow senile McCain around! Who gets worked in a frenzy by all the rhetoric that's thrown around at their hate rallies. After all they can't talk about the issues. What can one say when McCain's policies are the same as Bush's that has brought us to this disaster. All they can do is keep inciting hate until the clock finally runs out on them. Try and terrify people into voting for them. Most of their supporters can only tell Obama supporters how bad it's going to get when Obama gets elected. Like my husband told one 'It couldn't get any worse than the last 8 years have been and there still be a country!'

There are no suprises when a party of self-hating Amricans who have jerked over vigorously over every step George W. Loser has taken to weaken America take this sicko logic into the realm of acting out via self harm.

"Princeton Student Admits to Staging Attack, Police Say"
By ANNIE KARNI, Staff Reporter of the Sun | December 17, 2007
A student at Princeton University who said he was beaten unconscious by two black-clad assailants Friday has said that he fabricated the assault, and that he sent e-mail death threats to himself, three other Princeton students, and a prominent conservative professor at Princeton, Robert George, police said today.
No charges have been filed against the student, Francisco Nava, pending further investigation, a spokesman for the Princeton Township Police said.
In an interview, Mr. George earlier described Mr. Nava's wounds as "severe," doubting that they could have been self-inflicted.
Over the weekend, Mr. Nava's jaw was badly swollen, his face was covered with cuts and abrasions, and the inside of his mouth was bleeding, Mr. George said after visiting Mr. Nava in the emergency room.

I always wondered how it happened that the robber "noticed" her McCain sticker. Did he walk to the back of her car after he robbed her? How did he notice the sticker in the first place? Most robbers take the money and run. Anyway, as others have said, she is obviously a disturbed woman. I think someone knew this and used it to their advantage. In any case, her parents have to feel humiliated by all this. I hope the young lady gets help.

It is saddening to see the depths (how low) a "party, group, and individuals" will go to keep our country from forging a "more perfect union". It is as well disgusting to see, yet again, "fake/bias" reporting that is construed to be "real journalistic reporting".
Another point that should be noted as well, is why the "student republican group" that sent her had "no comment" after the discovery of her hideous lie??? She worked for them, they new her, they paid her......but distanced themselves from her lie.....
Racism.......a pathetic, disgusting blight that continues to stain this countries efforts (by some) to move forward. She said she was assaulted by a " 6 foot 4 black" man......truly and simply disgusting!
This is another example of why America needs to.....no "has to" change. I am so appalled by the actions of members of the republican party (she did not act alone......I do not believe that for one bit).

You mention Drudge but ABC had this story as their lead as well. I guess that proves they have no credibility either.
Today Drudge has a correction on the story but I don't see an apology to Drudge on your site anywhere. Funny.

she might have gotten away with it if she was smart enough to "carve" an O on her cheek- it looks the same forward or backward when you are looking in the mirror to do the "carving"-- what a ditz

There is something really sad here. We have reduced, collectively "we", the election of our president to a game. A zero sum game. This poor pathetic being thought she was doing the right thing for the cause. She was so enamored by the McCain/Palin campaign that she attempted to throw herself under a psychological train to save a sinking campaign. If she had pulled this off she would have forever been a heroin . There is something really sick about our politics. Here is the point, she could have influenced the outcome of this election. Doesn't this scare anyone else?
